Those are vector graphics, not polygons. Star Fox was modeled after the Japan-only Game Boy game "X", which was also modeled after StarGlider 1 and 2. And what about Atari's classic vector-based Star Wars and Battle Zone arcades?
Wo, Steve cool idea to film this thx for sharing, when this came out there was a few on display around town (Hamilton,Ont,CAN) I had my gameboy 1year since launch an at this (VBoy) time I was losing interest in new games.I got to play Teleroboxing, N watch the intro for this game.it was,how had the money to buy this and not B able teach or shair the gameplay with others. that sumer I ended up geting a job, did some camping, scouts, fishing, weekends with grandpa. I think he had me dig a postholes.
this was probly whone of the most bigest failers of all time but i mean it was bad bad but i do agry with them but some reson i still realy fucking whant this awsome shity consol it does actrely look cool if only it was in fucking coller this wold be realy fucking famos but noooooooooooo it hase to be in mother fucking read and black they cold of at least tryd to make it black and white or coller what a awsome fock up hahahahaahahaha but i sill whant this thing they shold of cold it 3d boy
@96travis you really really need to learn how to spell. when you spell every second word wrong, you sound really stupid, and reading through your comment is difficult and irritating. you spelled so many words wrong i do not know how anyone could fail that badly.
SteveBenway: You're not alone. I actually did enjoy playing this game in store demos. Never bought a VB, though.
A lot of people seem to think the recordings are exactly how the actual game looks and plays, and they don't take into account the actual 3D effects the Virtual Boy had.
There's a video by mnemo70 that shows a bit of Red Alarm gameplay, and recently, it's been swarmed by people trying to outdo each other in bashing the game over the past few days ... Pretty sad.
Thx for recording these, I remember renting this game. I recently got my VB back out, it's still such a unique gaming experience. Really a shame that it ended as soon as it started, a lot of lost potential. Imagine the games that could have been made if it was a commercial success. Instead we're left with only a handful of games, it's ironic one of the most unique systems has the smallest game library to experience it on. And the sad thing, most the games were quite good, yet it still failed
It only flickers like this on the camera. You can't see the fliker when you look into the headset.
The Virtual Boy can use either a power supply, which is 110V, US or Japanese voltage, etc, so in the UK, it needs a stepdown converter. It can also use a batter pack.
Both the PSU, or battery pack fit into the handheld controller, which is rather odd.
I've found some of the other games to be quite decent, but this is by far the best. I haven't played them all though, so there may be some other good ones.
there are some other decent games but the problem I have with it is the lack of using the systems abilities. out of all the VB games red alarm seems to be the only one that dose this well. the games I have for the system are mario's tennis, wario land, teleroboxer, galactic pinball, panic bomber(not a bad puzzle game but it really didn't need to be on vb.)red alarm, funky bowling, mario clash I must admit I do like this game though not near as much as red alarm though.
Really, Virtual Boy doesn't really suck, some of the games are fun (except for WaterWorld) the only problem is that it's in red, due to Nintendo not giving the system enough time to fully be completed, although it was intended to be in full color.
when you play this on virtual boy or in the emulator with 3d glasses.... awesome
thewizardeddye 10 months ago
@thewizardeddye I totally agree. The 3D works really well on it.

Hope they release some VB games on 3DS as downloads. (200 or 500 point each)
But please, make it possible to change the colors around.

how the hell can you tell where the walls are?
sonic4sale 1 year ago
@sonic4sale It's not so hard when you're looking at it through the viewfinder, though sometimes you get lost when the walls are *really* close.

This was probably the best game I played on the virtual boy, but that's not really saying much.

@yequalsx
i hope that was sarcasm because red alarm is one of the worst games in history
sonicnblaze33 2 years ago
A matter of opinion.
Speaking for myself, I find it the best game on the VB... and that is not sarcasm.

does it always flicker like that?
also, does the virtual boy need a plug?

I played this through when it was new and I assure you that it is totally different from Starfox from a gameplay standpoint.
vladpiranha 3 years ago
I feel sick looking at this game blurr! In the other hand it's a rippoff of Star Fox.
IAmSamThatIAM 3 years ago
The blur is purely down to the difficulty in focussing my camera on such a close image. The lens was shoved right into the viewfinder.
It's true that the game plays very similarly to Starfox, though I wouldn't go so far as to say it's a ripoff... considering they're both by Nintendo.

this is probably the only game worth playing on the VB.

do you know how many virtual boys were sold?
and how many games where released?
how much would you say one is worth used with only mario tennis?
kennylikes2lol 3 years ago
I don't know how many sold, though as it was only in production for one year, and only in USA and Japan, it can't have been many.
As for what they're worth... it depends a great deal on the condition it's in, whether it's boxed, and how many can be found at the time on ebay.
I've seen mint boxed examples sell for over £150, while those in less good condition go for around £70.
I had a report of one selling for £40, but have never seen one this cheap myself.
SteveBenway 3 years ago
The two best were clearly Wario Land and Red Alarm. It's sad that they'll never be ported or remade like so many other lost console games.

uberkoopa: Yeah. Personally, I think they should have waited on developing the Virtual Boy. Full-color LCD screens weren't as good as they are today.
Just imagine what the Virtual Boy would have been like if it had the Nintendo DS' technology!
