  • very precise and complete review, thank you very much.

  • thumbs up for the lady hands! :D

  • awesome review. thanks!

  • wow thanks im still young so i need a budget XD

  • For those people asking 'Can this lens fit my camera' Just look and see what fit mount your camera is! This Lens is an EF mount (red circle) so to my knowledge most of the Canon DSLR range will fit this Lens. its not an EF-S (white-square fit) Lens so if you have a camera like the 5D which only fits more Pro lens then you need to worry and this lens will fit your camera. It irritates me that canon made 2 different Lens mount fits.

  • Will the Canon - EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens work with the Canon EOS Rebel T3

  • what is the name of the first song?

  • This is the best review of this lense Ive seen

  • @rezjrprod same thought here :)

The best review so far of the nifty

  • I am new at this and I am wondering if it is possible to get NO blur. Everythig to be as sharp as possible?

How is whit this lens when you shoot in video mode. Is it ok to use it for stabile images or not moving objects???

    Thank you

  • @ddcare Hi, if you want everything to be sharp or to be as sharp as possible, you have gotta turn down the aperture to smaller hole, in other words, larger f/number. All lenses have this capability of shooting at larger aperture value, and 50mm f/1.8 has e smallest aperture of f/22, which is not a problem for 'everything to be sharp'. However, the star function of big aperture lenses like this one is that it is able to isolate unwanted subjects in the picture, which many would wanna utilizes it.

  • @ddcare ofcourses, it can be used as a lens in video mode. if u are using entry-lvl dslrs (1000d, 1100d, 500d, 550d, 600d), the video will be shooting at a shallow depth of field, and u cant crank down the aperture to a smaller hole due to technical limitation on such cameras. ur manual focusing skills throughout the video recording should be good as the depth of field is thinner than other lenses and focusing might be challenging. it's is therefore also ok to video shoot stable subjects.

  • @ddcare - it is !!

  • Wow! 0:18-0:22. First I thought I was watching the Arabic version or something, then I played it again to realize he was taking in English :|

  • no zooming should be on the cons

  • i hav the standard lens 18-55mm on my canon 550d.. plz suggest me an upgrade(replacement).. p.s. m more into natural n potrait clicks ..

thnkx man..!! ur video ws a grt one

  • very informative! what 50mm lens would you recommend for nice round 'circles'?

  • @rileyXXS i would recommend 50mm f/1.4. at least it has nicer and rounder circles and of course, slightly better bokeh effect. =D However, if u are on tight budget, u will be glad with this f/1.8 lens..

  • what lens did you use to do the video?

  • @jackie20ization hi, it's the 18-55 kit lens. =D Old lens and i already sold it away. =O

  • Loved your video! I am planning to buy this lens since quite a time... after watching your video, you cleared my mind!! Please update a review of 75-300mm if you can!

  • Great review!

  • Great review. You should work on some more. How about one for the Canon EF 28-135 f/3.5 USM. A great replacement for the kit lens.

  • Comment removed

  • great explanation. thanks dude.

  • Great review.. Thanks

  • japanese accent , damn!

  • can it be replacement for canon 18-55mm IS?

  • @singhparveen77 Hi, no it is not recommended that you should get your 50mm lens as replacement. reason is because 18-55 is a zoom lens that enables you to shoot at wide, at 50mm lens, u cant get as wide. hope this helps. =D

  • @TheCanonlens but still if i don't want that much wide can it be replaced. actually i lost my 18-55mm lens and i was thinking of buying this one as a replacement. 18-55mm is a little costly here in india and this one is pretty cheap :p

  • Very nice review, covered everything I was hoping for and not finding easily. From what I've seen, the front elements of the lens moves forward and back while focusing, but doesn't rotate, correct? It will allow me to use rectangular lens hood for filming, if that is the case.

Thank you very much and happy shooting! :)

  • @tigmc51 yes, the front element does not rotate. however. it might retract to a certain point where the front element does not protrude outwards. Meaning, rectangular lens hood will fall off in tt case. =D hope it helps!

  • nice one mate, its being delivered to my door now.

for 75 pounds you cant go wrong.

  • your english is totally fine. nice review!

  • Very very good review!

helped me make my mind for this lense. Thank you!

    Thank you for sharing!

  • Thanks for the review :) Very good job I will be purchasing this lens in the next few days. And for the record, I think your nails are fine. They aren't dirty or anything. :)

  • i love your background music..its so...happy..!

  • Dind't your mom ever teach you to cut your fingernails!!! It is disgusting boy

  • @700gsteak

My mom did, but my dad didnt. =D And yes, i got it cut already. Now it's still short. Last checked 5 seconds ago.

  • @700gsteak

watch the lens not the hands...

  • @700gsteak I knew if I look through the comments I would find someone who noticed that. I cant look at the lens anymore.

  • What is the maximum range(distance) this camera can shoot?

  • @xstncd

infinity. means there's no maximum distance. Its the same for all lenses.

  • @TheCanonlens Oh, thanks! I meant to say Lens, haha. So how far can it focus to? In your experience?

  • You have the most interesting review. Keep it up.

  • Thanks for the review. Thank you. - Behind VFX

  • best review i ever seen for canon 50mm 1.8

  • Useful information.

    Thank you a lot.

  • @someonestepmyfoot Thank you for your help, i bought the 35mm yesterday and it is fantastic!

  • Thanks for the review! Enjoyed it. Just wondering are you a singaporean?

Also, there is no IS in this lens but is it good to use without a tripod using handheld at night?

    Thanks bro.

  • @lauzhehao

Yes i am a singaporean! Anws, regarding ur question, it is still quite alright the take shots handheld. Though using tripod or monopod will still be the best. Despite using this lens that has wide aperture, u might sometime find hard to use low iso, say, 100. Depending on situation, high iso may still be needed to shoot without blurness by the camera shake.

  • Hi! Thank you for the video. I´m new in this world, i just purchased my canon eos 550d a week ago and i´m torn between this lens 50mm f/1.8 and the 35mm f/2. My main goal is make some good videos with good quality and beautiful image. Can you help me please? Thank you

  • @DonkikasTV

50mm f/1.8 & 35mm f/2 have almost the same aperture size.It makes insignificant difference when comparing the blurness of background etc...

However, in terms of the angle of view (the scope of the lens coverage), 35mm is wider than the 50mm. You have to see what suits u more and the type of videos u usually shoot. Honestly, both lens cant provide wider angle coverage. You might wanna consider lens that are wider in view, such as 24mm f/2.8or even a Zoom lens (18-55? 18-135?)? =D

  • @someonestepmyfoot And for anyone interested, if your not using a full frame camera, which means your using a cropped camera, ie.. Canon T1i, a 50mm will in effect be 80mm approx. Heres a good link to read about crop factor. wwwdotdigital-photography-schooldotcom/crop-factor-explained

  • Hi! Thank you for the video. I´m new in this world, i just purchased my canon eos 550d a week ago and i´m torn between this lens 50mm f/1.8 and the 35mm f/2. My main goal is make some good videos with good quality and beautiful image. Can you help me please? Thank you

  • OMG! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I am so happy you provided some excellent examples of using this lens with some beautiful photos and videos. Again thank you you've helped me make my mind upon purchasing this lens. :)

  • Great review :) Thanks a lot for this

  • Great review! Thanks!

  • This good for lowlight video with the 550d? Nightclubs etc mainly..

  • @kajis

Well not too bad, since you are taking videos, the video quality should be quite decent. =D have fun!

  • dude you have to cut your nails!

  • Very glad you showed examples.

  • Very good review! thank you very much

  • Very nice review :) Keep it up!

  • Wondeful Review! Just convinced me into getting one :)

  • good and awesome video

thanks to the info you show in this video

i gona buy this lens thank you

but i was wondering this thing is good for shoot basketball photos!

  • @skyobservation

    Hi! Goods and Bads!

On the good side, this lens has a wide aperture of f/1.8, so photos will be less prone to camera shake, or subject blur. U can freeze the action better.

What's on the down side is that this lens cant give you the closer coverage of the guys in action. If you are always shooting sports, i recommend you to look for a telephoto lens instead. =D Hope this help!

    Cheers!

  • Hey, don't sweat the English. I thought it was a great video! I have a question for you though. I just purchased my Canon 550D and am new to all of this lens talk. This lens sounds most ideal for my beginning level and actually plan on purchasing it tomorrow. On the other hand, I also have the standard EF-S 18-55mm lens that the camera came with. I am going to be shooting a lot of video and was wondering when in certain scenarios should I use each lens?

  • @TastierxDylxBar hi thank you for your comments. for video shooting, the 50mm lens can be used if you want to blur out the background and obtain a nice bokeh. Also, in low-lighting condition, this lens can enable you to record video at the correct exposure since 18-55mm has a smaller max aperture(f/3.5) compared to tt of the 50mm lens (f/1.8).

However, there are drawbacks. 1st, you cant zoom, 2nd you cant get as wide as the 18-55mm lens.

    Cheers!

  • May I offer a little bit of constructive criticism?

The DoF is a bit too shallow. At the start, around 0:27 seconds where you're twirling the lens around, it's gone out of focus. Stopping down a touch would be lovely.

Also, fingernails, while rather "not in the spotlight" were a bit, well, of an eyesore. Especially when your palm is facing the camera, and the fingernail peeks over your finger.

Brilliant video, hope to see more!

  • How does it fair for landscape?

  • not that ideal i would say, works only for some circumstances.

This lens has the focal length of 50mm, therefore it does not give that wider scope that you sometime need.

    Cheers!

  • Hey buddy, i have a 550d which i will use mostly for HD video. I have $300 budget for maximum DOF effect. What lens do you recommend?

  • A EF28mm f/2.8 or a EF35mm f/2? I am referring to prime lens here.. Cos i better not zoom my lens during the recording stage as zooming noise will be recorded as well. Do remember to get 50mm f/1.8 too! Cos its cheap and comes in handy when the need arises.

    Cheers!

  • wow the image quality is absurdly nice for the price

  • Hey guys, thanks for the support! Will be making another review soon i guess.. stay tune!

    Next lens: EF-S 55-250mm f/4.0-5.6 =D

  • nice review, make more!
