@hammerdowndiesel I've made some amazing things from PVC pipe and the heat gun. My Kodak Mini video camera didn't come equipped with a threaded hole to mount it to a tripod. I made a slip in mount for it from softened PVC pipe. Necessity is the mother of invention. ;-)
@Loki95531 Glad you liked that. I've made several knife sheaths from PVC pipe since making this video. I made a neck knife sheath and created a video for my channel for that sheath.

I've also included information about obtaining actual internal diameter dimensions for pipe.

@Forcedvoodoo1911 I'm glad that that worked out for you. I have another video on my channel about making a neck knife sheath from PVC pipe. @CrypticCRICKET LOL,at mrs.cricket :) Well I guess we will see if mrs.cyclops hair dryer will do the trick...I need to make a sheath for my Cold Steel Katana Machete, and would like to do a small survival sheath/kit.Maybe a slightly over sized one for a small machete I have herewith enough room to strap/carry some basic stuff with me...Any who, thanks for the video, and the response.
@jqcyclops Mrs Cricket has an 1875 watt Conair blow dryer and It will soften thin walled PVC pipe. Doesn't do it quick but it will do it.
An oven set to 220 degrees F will also soften PVC pipe and do it pretty fast. Unfortunately you heat the entire piece of pipe so you have no control over what gets soft and what doesn't..

Then just calculate the maximum distance around the outside of the knife blade and compare it to the internal circumference dimensions of the available pipe choices.

very cool idea,i just finished making one for my CS bushman, much easier than it looks.i did use a propane torch to heat the *belt loop*,the rest was done in a toaster oven at 200 degrees and flattened as per the boards.this is neat.thank you for taking the time to share this.
Hi Kayakwinds. It's my understanding that PVC pipe gives off poisonous fumes when it gets too hot. IMO a propane torch puts out way too much heat to soften PVC pipe without releasing a lot of those toxic fumes real fast.
I've softened PVC pipe in boiling water before (212 deg.) Very dangerous to mess around with boiling water but that gives you some idea of the temps you need to get the PVC up to in order to soften it.
Hey, CC, what's up? Don't know how I missed this video but it is the answer I've been looking for! I've got a large fillet knife my Dad gave me a few years ago but the sheath is for a lefty! This will fit the bill nicely. Very cool!
Been traveling, swimming in the ocean, fishin, dodging thunderstorms, and working on projects around the house.
I hope you'll make a video of your PVC knife sheath build. If you do, I hope you will submit it here as a video response. It can be a very popular subject for people. I think this may be my most popular video so far.
@NeoPrepper i HEAR THAT I got SO many knives that the sheaths have come and gone so I been thinking about getting around to making some and WHAH LA here this is GOOD LOOKIN OUT =P
And that will solve the next problem I was just thinking about. I usualy use wraped sign material with a seat belt sewn cover but this is way easier. Thanks dude. this almost makes upfor all the knives I am forced to make, now
@cernunnos5 That bread knife that I turned into a bushcrafting knife in my other video now has a neck knife sheath made from 1/2" SCH 40 PVC pipe. The sheath holds the knife handle up and the blade pointed towards the ground. The neck lanyard is attached to the sheath near the end of the knife handle. The sheath turned out awesome! Very functional sheath design.
With this sheath the cutting edge doesn't really come in contact with the sheath so I don't think it will ever do anything to dull the cutting edge. I have another knife that I use much more frequently and that knife also has a PVC sheath. That one's cutting edge does contact the sheath and that one stays sharp.
Hey,Great idea and fun project.I did however see on another site where some plastics will dull the knife blade from friction when removing and replacing the knife.Just wondered if you noticed any dulling on this one. Thanks
@rdsrf Schedule 20 is the thin walled PVC pipe used in this video. I recently made a neck knife sheath from schedule 40 pipe and it worked fine. Just took a little longer to get soft.
I recently made a different style PVC pipe sheath for a smaller bushcrafting knife that I made. The new style of sheath hangs from a loop of paracord as a neck knife rather than hanging from a belt loop. In making this latest knife sheath I discovered that once the PVC pipe is soft, it will stretch a little to fit a blade that's a little too big for the pipe. It shrinks a little as it cools so add tape to the spine or cutting edge of blade while formng the sheath.
@txrelichunter The formula for the circumference of a circle is useful in this situation:
The circumference of a circle = Pi x diameter (the pipes I.D.) (Pi= 3.14)
Then just calculate the maximum distance around the outside of the knife blade and compare it to the internal circumference dimensions of the available pipe choices.

@Epiphone0927 One source online says that it will maintain it's properties at temps below 140 deg. F. I think I remember boiling some PVC pipe once to soften it. It took a while to soften and that's about 212 degrees. I would guess that it takes about 200 degrees to soften it.
Great tutorial! I just tried this with PVC bought from Home Depot. I think it was schedule 30 or 40 maybe? Well it worked, but I definitely think the thin walled PVC is better. Where do you think I can get some? I couldn't find any at Home Depot...
Nope, it, doesn't dull the edge. Nope the knife doesn't cut through the PVC. I don't believe that the knife's cutting edge ever realy comes in solid contact with the PVC. The contact is between the sides of the blade and the inner sides of the sheath. The knife blade is actually pinched between the two sides of the sheath.
@uberjorge5737 Well thank you! I'm glad you guys are enjoying my videos. I've been working hard at improving the photography and story telling aspect the last few months. I've come a long way from my first videos. LOL.

I don't remember where I bought it. You can buy these heat guns at big box retailers that sell tools. Walmart has the Wagner HT 1000 Heat Tool for $24. It has about the same output as my older version of it. I've also seen them at discount stores like "Big Lots". It's a "power stripper" used to strip paint from things. My heat gun has two heat settings. 600 deg. F and 1100 deg. F. I used the 1100 deg. setting in the video but IMO the 600 deg. setting would have gotten it done too.
I just tried to soften some thin walled PVC pipe using my wife's nuclear hair dryer. After 5 minutes or so the pipe did get soft enough to flatten it out. I was only able to do a small area on the end of the pipe though because the hair dryer doesn't put out as much heat as a heat gun.
oh my god this is so fucking cool !!! i wonder it i can melt the PVC over a fire, i do not have a hot air pistol thing. can you tell me if i can do that?
Hi! Saw this about a week ago and have already made 5 sheaths based on your little tutorial! FANTASTIC IDEA!!!! I've posted one of them on my channel...and given you credit for where I got the idea. Hope you don't mind! Thanks and keep it up!
@mowat440 Hi mowat! The ranger band creates a way to close/ lock the sheath's belt loop onto a belt. Doing this stops the sheath from coming off of your belt when you pull the knife from the sheath. I should have demonstrated that in my video.
wow i have never thought of using pvc. briliant idea. i have been thinking of trying a project with kydex but this is a free method! thanks for sharing
@AltairDhauglu I think it's actually pretty easy to take the knife out of the sheath with only one hand. The plastic belt loop is rigid and the leg lanyard also helps out when you're wearing the sheath.
When you make this sheath you can control how tightly the sheath fits the blade. If it's too tight just put a little heat to the cold plastic sheath to get it to loosen up a little. It's a fun project. You learn a lot by doing it.
The knife in the video is a knife that I sort of made. I purchased a messed up but high quality 10" chef's knife from a thrift shop for $4. and then I reshaped the blade into a drop point style blade and then I put a new cutting edge on it. I've made two like that from better quality 10" shef's knives that I've purchased from thrift shops. I've ben looking for another chefs knife so that I can do a video about remaking old knives into new knives. Fun and fast to do!
@Snowborda4life Hi Snowborda! Thank you but I can't really take credit for the idea of making knife sheaths from PVC pipe. I originally saw the process in another Youtube video. It was a video where a guy was making a scabbard for a machete. I decided to make a video about making a sheath for a bushcrafting knife (that I had also made) because I wanted to show how to make a 1 piece PVC sheath with an integrated belt loop system. It really is a neat way to make a knife sheath.
@CrypticCRICKET it really is a great idea!!! I know that in kydex sheaths the blade will get worn down by the constant rubbing of the blade against the plastic, do you have the same problem with this method? or when you mold it to the knife is there enough room for it to just click into place or does the blade rub against the wall of the sheath? thank you for replyin mate!! (:
@Snowborda4life The sheath holds onto the blade by putting pressure on it. The tight fit hasn't caused any polishing of the metal yet but it probably will over time. The contact points between the sheath and the blade may be on the knife's spine edges and as a result the plastic is rubbing somewhere where I'm not looking for wear. I don't use this knife very often because it's kind big compared to my favorite folder. This knife and it's sheath are part of my bugout kit.
@CrypticCRICKET he dident RIDE the ray and it was a STING ray not a eagle ray the reason why he got spiked in the heart was becouse he miss calculated the distance between him and the ray becouse of the water ... hi just got a LITTLE bit to close ... o and by the way please dont make fun of him im a big fan you see and it only shows your a pussy becouse you guys are making fun of him wile hes dead... remember he cannot step up you know
@21creed Thanks for clarifying that. I missremembered the creature as an eagle ray. Probably because the media was showing some eagle ray pics at the time and calling it a stingray.
I've been diving for about 15yrs now. Swam with lots of stingrays and eagle rays. I saw a really big one up close the other day while kayaking on a grass flat. From what I've seen it would be very difficult to get spiked unless you were right on top of a stingray because the spike is in the mid section of the tail.
@CrypticCRICKET yeas he was very close and yeas it would be very difficult to get stung unless you are right on top of it but i found a vid showing the last seconds of his life and the ray actually swim up towards him... at the beginning he was actually around 5 feat from the sting ray but still OVER it...by the way i forgot to tell you that the vid was very nice
I recently made a new fixed blade knife so now I need to make another PVC pipe sheath. I don't think I'll change a thing on the design because the one in the video has been great!
It's perfectly ugly which means it's perfectly sexy as a camp/survival knife sheath. LOL!
@sheldonspeicher Hi Sheldon. Thanks for adding this video to your favorites. I appreciate your support!
You must mean the last 5 seconds of the video.
This knife sheath video is one of my most popular videos thus far. It was one of my earlier ones and I'm more creative now than I was back then. Check out my channel. There's lots more to see. I have a new high-def camera as well.
U know how to make a cheap tripod? One screw, one bolt and a water bottle with a hole thru the cap for the bolt, that must fit the thread on your camera.

@CrypticCRICKET thanx anyway

oh my god this is so fucking cool !!! i wonder it i can melt the PVC over a fire, i do not have a hot air pistol thing. can you tell me if i can do that?
snuffying 9 months ago
@snuffying It will melt over a fire but it may get too hot and burn releasing poisionous gasses. Just don't breath the fumes would be my advise.

@CrypticCRICKET thx for the reply and advice, ill wear a gas mask when melting the pipe xD

take the parachord of that handle, makes the knife totally unusable if you ask me
bushcraftourway 10 months ago
@bushcraftourway
I've not found it to be that way. Curious. Why does it make the knife totally or even somewhat unusable for you?
CrypticCRICKET 10 months ago
Hi! Saw this about a week ago and have already made 5 sheaths based on your little tutorial! FANTASTIC IDEA!!!! I've posted one of them on my channel...and given you credit for where I got the idea. Hope you don't mind! Thanks and keep it up!

what is the point of the ranger loop like the sheath
mowat440 10 months ago
@mowat440 Hi mowat! The ranger band creates a way to close/ lock the sheath's belt loop onto a belt. Doing this stops the sheath from coming off of your belt when you pull the knife from the sheath. I should have demonstrated that in my video.

wow i have never thought of using pvc. briliant idea. i have been thinking of trying a project with kydex but this is a free method! thanks for sharing

Is it hard to take the knife out with one hand?
AltairDhauglu 11 months ago
@AltairDhauglu I think it's actually pretty easy to take the knife out of the sheath with only one hand. The plastic belt loop is rigid and the leg lanyard also helps out when you're wearing the sheath.
When you make this sheath you can control how tightly the sheath fits the blade. If it's too tight just put a little heat to the cold plastic sheath to get it to loosen up a little. It's a fun project. You learn a lot by doing it.
CrypticCRICKET 11 months ago
Thanks you guys! It's a fun project.

That's being a plain GENIUS!

great idea! thanks for the info. oh, and what kind of knife was that? i like the size and wood handle.
Aaronbillings 11 months ago
@Aaronbillings Hi Aaron!

Great idea mate!!!! thats an amazing and inexpensive sheath, thnks for the info! :D
Snowborda4life 11 months ago
@Snowborda4life Hi Snowborda! Thank you but I can't really take credit for the idea of making knife sheaths from PVC pipe. I originally saw the process in another Youtube video. It was a video where a guy was making a scabbard for a machete. I decided to make a video about making a sheath for a bushcrafting knife (that I had also made) because I wanted to show how to make a 1 piece PVC sheath with an integrated belt loop system. It really is a neat way to make a knife sheath.
CrypticCRICKET 11 months ago
@CrypticCRICKET it really is a great idea!!! I know that in kydex sheaths the blade will get worn down by the constant rubbing of the blade against the plastic, do you have the same problem with this method? or when you mold it to the knife is there enough room for it to just click into place or does the blade rub against the wall of the sheath? thank you for replyin mate!! (:
Snowborda4life 11 months ago
@Snowborda4life The sheath holds onto the blade by putting pressure on it. The tight fit hasn't caused any polishing of the metal yet but it probably will over time. The contact points between the sheath and the blade may be on the knife's spine edges and as a result the plastic is rubbing somewhere where I'm not looking for wear. I don't use this knife very often because it's kind big compared to my favorite folder. This knife and it's sheath are part of my bugout kit.
CrypticCRICKET 11 months ago
@CrypticCRICKET ahhh alright, i gotcha. I am probably going to do this to make sheaths for my machetes. Thanks again for the idea!! take care

bastonor 1 year ago
@bastonor That's funny! I hadn't thought of that connection.
Wasn't Steve Irwin the guy who got spiked in the heart by an eagle ray because he was riding the eagle ray?
CrypticCRICKET 1 year ago
@CrypticCRICKET he dident RIDE the ray and it was a STING ray not a eagle ray the reason why he got spiked in the heart was becouse he miss calculated the distance between him and the ray becouse of the water ... hi just got a LITTLE bit to close ... o and by the way please dont make fun of him im a big fan you see and it only shows your a pussy becouse you guys are making fun of him wile hes dead... remember he cannot step up you know
(this is in no way an insult)
21creed 1 year ago
@21creed Thanks for clarifying that. I missremembered the creature as an eagle ray. Probably because the media was showing some eagle ray pics at the time and calling it a stingray.
I've been diving for about 15yrs now. Swam with lots of stingrays and eagle rays. I saw a really big one up close the other day while kayaking on a grass flat. From what I've seen it would be very difficult to get spiked unless you were right on top of a stingray because the spike is in the mid section of the tail.
CrypticCRICKET 1 year ago
@CrypticCRICKET yeas he was very close and yeas it would be very difficult to get stung unless you are right on top of it but i found a vid showing the last seconds of his life and the ray actually swim up towards him... at the beginning he was actually around 5 feat from the sting ray but still OVER it...by the way i forgot to tell you that the vid was very nice

NocturnalBreather 1 year ago
@NocturnalBreather Thank you!
I recently made a new fixed blade knife so now I need to make another PVC pipe sheath. I don't think I'll change a thing on the design because the one in the video has been great!
It's perfectly ugly which means it's perfectly sexy as a camp/survival knife sheath. LOL!

that was a great vid up until that last 5 minuets with that accent
sheldonspeicher 1 year ago
@sheldonspeicher Hi Sheldon. Thanks for adding this video to your favorites. I appreciate your support!
You must mean the last 5 seconds of the video.
This knife sheath video is one of my most popular videos thus far. It was one of my earlier ones and I'm more creative now than I was back then. Check out my channel. There's lots more to see. I have a new high-def camera as well.

U know how to make a cheap tripod? One screw, one bolt and a water bottle with a hole thru the cap for the bolt, that must fit the thread on your camera.

@LosAngelesWeedSmoker Great Idea! I may have to use that for my kayak mount application.
