  • I'm a spaceman, and I find the name offensive.

  • Oh yeah!

  • I see (and hear) this one is aluminum, is the Phaedrus wood or steel? It sounds much better?- need to know for my project

  • I have what's probly a dumb question. I notice that pretty much the entire thing is metal, and metal conducts electricity. Did you do anything to protect against the potential frying of hair (mainly during a surge)? Or does it not matter as much because it's hooked up to a grounded amp? (I'm not a pro when it comes to the construction of guitars)

  • @gsr200guy Using active pickups would isolate the pickups

  • Sounds like shit to me dude, sorry

  • cool idea bro! maybe include a small nicely curved aluminum plate to rest your right hand! Awesome to see innovative instruments!

  • Oh man i'd love to play one of those...!

  • sound sucks.

  • Could you post a vid of you making one of these?

  • I'll be honest, I can't say I'm a fan of the sound, but I'd like to know how well this sustains. instruments like this tend to sustain really well.

  • Do ya use a wooden truss rod?

  • That aluminum bar looks like a straight edge for construction work. Is it 'empty inside?

If you injected into the neck some epoxy could greatly improve the sound. I would try, if i be you: You have done a great job, deserves it sounded better!

  • not bad

  • although id never want to make one or prolly buy one this is still purty badass man. props!

  • I like the innovation and design. The lack of wood will reduce resonance. I'm not sure if the aluminum will effect the pickup. Awesome looking!

  • cool idea, but still it sounds like 6 strings on a peice of metal

  • I want one

I hate when the wood neck bend !

  • interesting concept with the pickup. ( i love activ emgs too)

  • i like it

  • how do I buy one of these. Do you have prices.

  • i'd have to charge a lot of cash. just try to build one, they're not that hard.

  • That's awesome.

You should get a plank of wood for the fretboard though.

  • might work if you were playing for herbie hancock. but that aint gonna fly in any other type of music

  • I woulda used Magnesium, but, if ya play to hot... POOF!

  • that is absolutely badass, I want one

  • Creative, very creative... but terrible sound.

  • Best way to get Alzheimer's Disease.

  • sry dude, u tried to build a new thing, but this has, to be honest, nothing to do with a bass...

  • I actually like the way it sounds.Maybe not so much on chords though.

  • all o you buttholes who criticize this guy have absolutely no idea what its like to have the brains and ability to even imagine doing something like this. So piss the fack off!!!

  • As always, we can see an outfit of fat-haired hippies blaming everything but wood.

Bind up a hippie blind, and tell him that this was the Jaco Fender. Guess what happens. Yes, he tells you 'just as I thought'. End of story.

    Great job, BTW.

  • Damn, that sounds nice. It's got that upright bass feel... jazz!

  • Sounds like.....like......Aluminum!!!!

  • sounds like hell... and with hell I mean pain, suffering, brimstone and more sh!t like that

  • @Marcucurucho If you were told this was a fretless Zon and there was no video, you'd definitely start weep urines about 'this true woody, divine sound'. Fucking experts.

  • Hope they give me money with it if I order one of those!

  • much respect, great job!

    ~lox

  • great!

  • great design idea :)

You might want to test other materials for sound variation :)

    thumbs up!

  • trash!!

  • Nice job, I like how the tuners are at the bottom of the bass, I've never seen that before.

  • I think it sounds pretty good. Kinda like an upright bass, but nothing like it haha.

  • Sounds like that bass would go extremely well with a bit of compression and fuzz. Good stuff, keep building the interesting instruments. And give us a fretless version some day! :D

  • Gilleece666, this IS a fretless bass.

  • Whoops, I meant to say fretted. I think it would work pretty well with the tone, might get a pretty interesting slap tone from it.

  • @iceberg220 Fretless, yes. But a bass...?

  • Great work. Love it.

  • Nice bass, I like it. =)

  • this is the uglyest bass i ever seen!!!

este es el bajo mas feo que eh visto!!!

    VOMITIVOOO

  • i'd love to hear it with a piezo.

  • Oh. My. Fucking. God.

    That's fucking awesome.

  • must kill your hand after a while :-/

  • grate tone, im gonna do something like this

  • I like it...I just don't like the way it sounds. With some refining it could sound a little better. (To my ears.)

  • I bet you could vary the tone a lot with by changing the amplification. Sound like it would be great with some lighter tube overdrive...

  • epiiiiiic!!

  • I bet you can catch a few radio stations with that once you plug it. Too much noise and don't like the sound. Creative idea anyway.

  • thats bad ass!

  • a plank of aluminum with 6 strings? that's exactly how it sounds

  • @Jubuthehunt lol

  • Should gig with it, would turn heads for sure

  • Dude make a fully fretted aluminium bass. 4 or more strings, It'd be amazing

  • very unique

  • that is fucking amazing

  • Ought to anodize it or powder coat it. You'll end up with black hands playing that! Sounds nice, though.

  • are you blind? he put the nuts through the end holes, with the tuning nuts at the base by his plucking hand.

  • wow....

  • hay is not weld it got holes

  • Soooooo awesome.

  • it looks like a sword

    very cool

i want one although i think i rather have a wooden one

  • Great!

    More innovation at RHYTHMTANDEM.

  • Damn cool...though wood is my choice while it lasts...is this the future?! Mad Maxx bass!

  • somehow the sound reminds me of a sitar, anyone else getting that?

  • Yeah it does at points to be honest.

  • neat! Might I suggest not plucking more than 1 string at a time though. The sound gets very muddy. interesting design though

  • Saaaweet! Very nice indeed!

  • this is one of the coolest things on youtube

  • where can you get a plank of aluminum

  • haha a very good question

  • wokeup one morning after a party and my butt hurt real bad...

  • If you talked shit to him in person, he could just beat the fuck out of you with it and keep playing with out a problem. I think it's cool, he should keep building instruments and getting better.

  • saludos hermano puedes decir las medidas de la solera ... estoy intentando hacer un bajo como el tuyo gracias

  • this would be sick to see at a concert

  • That looks like a frickin' badass sword!! Intense! And it sounds good.

  • stop telling people to make a real bass, a bass is a bass.

  • Okay the sound on 1:00 sounded like a wet fart, but cool I guess.

  • sweet

  • THAT is what I call awesome.

  • Powerful sound. Make one that looks like a real bass.

  • sounds good.

  • get a real bass player to play it

  • Interesting, strange sounding but it does look like a crazy weapon. I'd play one.

  • It looks like a weapon...awesome

  • Steampunk bass guitar.

  • cool stuff!!!

  • what scale are you using for this guitar ?

  • your instruments are so great, totally love it !

  • its not the best sound but its cool

  • how do you radius a chuck of metal?

  • looks like zero fret

  • what does that have to do with anything?, radius refers to the roundness of the fingerboard

  • Do some slap.

  • Slap on a Fretless sucks...

  • It was a joke, and no it doesn't. listen to the song my name is mud by Primus.

  • thats not true man!! some fretless basses sound amazing when you slap 'em!!! trust me!

  • listen to primus and say that again

  • Primus sucks.

  • @nowootno yeah, this reminds me of "over the electric grapevine"

  • @nowootno wtf?

  • I don't like the wound

  • did you use flats or rounds?

  • dude that's awesome man so cool!

  • yeh! I guess is not bad but you cannot beat a good piece of wood

  • Actually you can beat a good piece of wood pretty easily and it will crack...

    lol

  • LOL! thats not what I ment LOL haha

  • I know ... I was just being silly...

    rock on bro

  • This is great man!

  • It's rather "aluminating"! Sorry, I couldn't help myself. OH BEHAVE!

  • aluminium sucks, the wood rulz

  • i bet u had wood while u were watching this so shut up

  • OMG! my friend was right this looks very similar to my bass i made out of aluminum. Yours looks better than mine though.

  • Interesting, your pickup is down where a neck pickup would be, but it retains a bridge pickup brightness. Is it because of the aluminum tone qualities?

  • damn practical man. like having just bones for a body. sweet.

  • nice bass man

  • i know you build yours but is there a certain name for these because i wanted to buy one

  • a bass an alien would play

  • a bass murderface would play, and afterwords kill people with it

  • it'd have to be design differently.

  • do you think this would work for tapping as well?

  • Well done Dude....

I'm waiting on the build detail :) :)

  • Do you have enough room to slap behind that pickup?

  • not really :-(

  • That seems like something you should resolve.

  • Make me one!!! What happened to your Phaedrus basses? I'd order a fretted one in a heartbeat!!!

  • cool its got a little loop soldered to the top so you can hang it on a coat hook

  • that is the f****n' wierdest thing ever, cool

  • I'm surprised at how good it sounds. Nice job there sir! :)

  • that's one of the most unique instruments i've ever seen...can you make an eight string(4 w/ octaves)? i'd like to hear what one of those would sound like...

  • Your 4 steel string in the other video sounds a lot better. I don't think aluminum has enough mass for a proper bass sound. This one has metallic "ringing" overtones. Just my opinion.

  • Your 4 string in the other video sounds a lot better. Why is that?

  • that thing sounds really good man this is too cool i mean its gotta be satisfying to play an instrument but to play one u made urself that has to be an altogether wonderful experience

  • imma try to build me one but i think im going to fail -_-

  • you are a god among men, that rules.

  • Fucking awesome. I like the wall hanger. That low note sounds like a huge piano, 5 stars.

  • maldito loco XD

  • awsome

  • awesome. unfortunately companies in the 80's gave up on making guitars out of metal because they were too hard to keep in tune with tempurature changes. also metal deos not have the same resonant qualities as wood.

  • Actually Metal is much Less resistent to tempurature changes and stays in tune better

than wood. That is why your tuners are made out of metal and not wood.

Also metal bodies and necks sustain longer that wood.

  • NO they gave it up because its expensive and heavy and the orientals can't make it that well at price point.

  • So is a nice guitar, aluminum is pretty light, and...actually I have no idea what orientals have to do with this.

  • I agree. A piece of aluminum like that would be SUPER light. And as it's alot smaller it would be considerably lighter than an actual bass. Not a huge fan of the tone....but otherwise cool.

  • cool.

  • Very cool concept.

  • sick!!!!!!!!!

  • Arf...

    It's cold and ugly.

Bass in steel...what a strange horrible thing.

  • I like it.

  • I bet a piezoelectric pickup would work well on something like that. I like your idea, the sound is rather nice. Try a bridge pickup and you should be able to do some slap style. The design really looks great!

  • kinda wish you had sum tap ot slap in there

  • the next space bass!

  • first things first its aluminium is pronounce AL-U-MIN-E-UM not AL-UMIN-UM, secondly that thing Rules, btw before fools say thats how we americans say it remember im in the country that spawned the language, OK

  • Wow, bobbit90! You're a loser!

    I'd take one of those!

  • corniest comment ever, some people from london should know that your supposed to pronounce the T's in words like bottom and bottle and out, the way i see it, if someone says a word and you understand it, no matter the pronunciation, JOB DONE, ya toss

  • It shocks me that you have never heard of these interesting things called "dialects". I doubt you had much to do with the spawning of our common language either so keep that English arrogance to yourself.

  • Too fuckin' right, bobbit

  • In linguistics, there's this thing called language change. Over time, in different regions, languages change. There's no "should", there's only "is". Aluminum is pronounced /@.'lu:.mIn.@m/ (any linguists please forgive inaccuracies in my X-SAMPA) in American English.

  • We are in the country that spawned ALCOA!

    HaHaHa!

  • it must be freeze to play it in the winter!

  • you should make a how to tutorial or something

  • hey man, could you please send me like a list of materials and instructions. i want to build one of these for my hsc metal work project. thanks. sounds awsome, and looks killer man. thumbs up.

  • Hey Thayer that's very cool and sounds awesome. Where did you get a plank of aluminum like that?

  • NateBassist! You're right bro! Before I saw your comment, I too thought it sounded like an upright! I like it!
