@8824shyte While often arcade conversions for Atari ST and Amiga weren't as good as they could have been, it should be remembered that even those arcade games which used 68000 as main CPU commonly had also additional, specialized hardware which often was superior to the hardware of home computers/consoles at the time. However, I think that the hardware of both ST and Amiga would have been enough for virtually perfect conversion of G'nG with some minor adjustments (sound for ST, colors for both).
All the sound effects are sampled from "Enter the dragon" with Bruce Lee. That was what impressed me most....I got a bit annoyed at the 3rd fighter sometimes....maybe could have mixed it up a bit...some bouts with 2 fighters, some with 3
@jengusjnr1977 The amiga people always claimed the amiga was best but it was only because the amiga had an operating system. It's just that the amiga owners wouldn't admit that it was shit so Amiga & Atari ST = same
Actually, it seems that Amiga and Atari ST versions are mostly identical with the possible exception of music (which may be slightly better on Amiga). My speculation is that they both use mostly the same code especially since both A500 and ST use 68000 as their CPU.

the Amiga and ST were originally the same computer created by Amiga, but when Atari split from Commodore they retained the original computer which became the ST but Amiga continued developing it and added the custom sound and graphics chips, and brought out the Amiga a couple of years later.
@trailersic wrong the amiga was designed by atari exactly how it was released and the st designed by commodore. The management switched, the design teams and computers followed. Atari never split from commodore. They were never part of commodore (atari 8 bit vs c64 for e.g.)
@DamoclesAlpha Well, the Amigas sound chip was the Paula.. and the sound chip of the ST was from an Amstrad CPC 464 if I remember correctly... that makes the St as having a sound chip not even comparable to what was put in the C64.
@1971abynx That was why I thought it would take some effort to adapt the sound of Ghosts'n Goblins for ST. However, apparently the arcade version of G'nG used two Yamaha YM2203 chips for sound while ST used Yamaha YM2149F. According to the Wikipedia YM2203 includes also "Full internal implementation of Yamaha's YM2149F SSG chip". So, adapting the sound of the arcade version for ST isn't necessarily as difficult as I thought although it may require some compromises.
Loved this game. I used to spend hours typing in words to make things happen. I don't remember specifically but typing "inch" made an inch worm go across, "bird" made...well a bird fly across the background. Plus there were the messages that would pop up if you typed in 4-letter swear words, and if you typed too many the game would reset! Happy days indeed.
It was easy to think the ST was on par with the amiga back in the day.The amiga suffered a huge amount of ST ports in its early days .Later on into the 16 bit computer era,it was obvious which was best.
I had an Amiga but there was very little difference between the Amiga and the ST. Just the sound was far superior on the Amiga but everything else the ST could do just as well.
But I remember when I discarded my ST for a fast PC in 1993, and my Amiga-owning buddies were so mad with envy and despair, that they persuaded themselves that Amiga was still better - they meant 1200, of course, but couldn't prove it with that little amount of software which was available.
Give me a break! The Amiga had custom chips dedicated to graphics and the Atari ST didn't. The Amiga had a chip dedicated to graphics called Agnus. The first Agnus chip was 512k (used for graphics) and later Amigas came equipped with the Fat Agnus (1meg of Chip Ram) and again used for graphics.
The ST's graphics were forced into one processor while the Amiga shared the load between multiple chips.
The lastest ST versions, Atari 520STE and Atari 1040STE actuelly both have better sound than original Atari ST and did have a blitter chip. But it dosen't seen some ST games used it?
For the orignal Atari ST, I do also prefer SID chip on C64. Even IK+ shown here sound better on C64 IK+.
I do respect Atari ST, since Atari ST have its own charm (Even I'm are a Amiga fan).
Ahle2 is 100% correct actually not many games had good audio on a st mostly they where awful only having the audio chip of a crappy zx spectrum128 was a bad move by atari really
this was an exeption as it could use samples as they wasnt much on the screen to hammer the cpu like scrolling something else the st couldnt do very well sideways
Can't handle the truth ? Prove me wrong... It's very funny to hear people that know nothing about hardware trying to defend their beloved computer just because they can't accept the truth. I mean saying "Atari ST has faster games compared to the Amiga" (as you said in another video) just proves how little you actually understand about hardware!

I used to play a lot of flight simulators/3D games back then, and I really enjoyed AtariST performance more. But then, when I tried a 2D game... I'd rather visit my Amiga friend to play it - of course without telling him how I enjoyed the digital sound so much LOL
Defo not, the amiga had a four channel stereo sound chip where as the St had a 3 channel mono,
people would buy st's back in the day for music, because it had a built in midi port, you had to buy a seperate midi interface for the amiga. Overall the Amiga was better.
The standard ST could not play back audio samples without the processor taking a heavy hit. That's why many ST games had sampled intro scenes, but the in-game sound was provided by the awful YM2149 sound chip. Only the STE with its twin 8 bit digital to analogue converters can outpace the Amiga in the audio department.
I agree in a Paula vs YM2149 contest the Amiga wins hands down... but the difference between ST and STE is much more than being able to output stereo sound. The STE only has one sound chip -the same as the ST- but it also has hardware for playing back sampled sound. Thus, with recording equipment, you could record (sample) almost any sound and then replay it through the STE. I believe that someone even rigged a CDROM to an STE and played a CD through it!
get this then, my mate had an stfm (of which i sold to him) he was loading a game once and the sound waves were coming through the radio on a certain channel, all the sound from the stfm came through the radio, so I suppose The FM has something to do with that.
No the STE do NOT have better sound than the Amiga OCS (that's a myth and wish thoughts from sad Atari owners). I could go on a whole day with just technical fact and sound comparison (trust me i have the knowledge about this). Do you believe that just because the STe could output 50Khz, while the OCS Amiga only could output 28Khz is a reason the believe that? Then you simply havn't got the WHOLE picture.
There was a myth with this game: that you could fight the old master. I'm pretty sure that you couldn't, I've fought my way well into black belt, the score just gets higher, nothing more, so there was just no end to the game

Arjozof 3 years ago
No it doesn't... It runs in 16.666FPS (Every third frame)..
Check it out for your self. Count how many updates there is per second using some kind of video edition software !!
Even if it would have been a 50 FPS game, it wouldn't be very impressive cause the backgound doesn't scroll.
The Amiga version is equally slow (direct ST port)
Ahle2 3 years ago
Even though it's a bit choopy, this game is probably the best game in it's genre for both the ST and the Amiga!
Ahle2 3 years ago
The balls or the bombs scene is very fluent, it can't be 16 FPS, it is 25 interlaced = 50 Hz, or I'm totally blind, which is impossible :D.
Arjozof 3 years ago
First of all the ST can't output interlaced graphics !
Secondly, i know for a fact that the game runs at 16.6666FPS.
Third, most ST owners were used to low framerates and they didn't realize the jerkiness until they they saw the same game on a more capable system.
- Most scrolling games ran in 16.666 FPS
- Most non scrooling games ran in 25 FPS
- Very few games (maybe less than 5) ran in 50 FPS ("Enchanted lands", "Leavin' Teramis")
