When my old man lost it in much the same way as this (my mum was apparently a spy sent to kill him) in hospice the only 'doctor' (as opposed to caregiver) there stayed on and did a 24 hour shift just so he didn't have to get shifted to hospital. I can relate to, and see the funny side of this, you either laugh or you cry.
I don't know why some found this so offensive... I've worked in nursing homes, adult day care centers and had a grandfather with alzheimer's and I don't find this offensive. these are simply things that you have to deal with every day in this profession. and if you don't try and find some humor in the situation, even the most calm and sane people would snap like a dry twig. it's not done out of cruelty, it's to make a tough job bearable. ;)
I had a patient call the police on another nurse because he wanted his medication, I'm pretty sure he was half out of his mind. Needless to say, they called us. =/
NOoooooooooooo don't give him Ativan, it will make him more disoriented. Dementia patients should not receive benzos. Atypical antipsychotics are the best way to induce mild sedation in these patients. Seroquel is a good first choice.
As a former nursing home nurses aide I can relate to this video, well done and a good way to vent frustration as well as give people an idea of what it is like to deal with dementia patients.
Yeah, dementia patients are fun to mess with. I once had a guy thinking I was the son of Christ and I was going to bring him to the promised land in the ambulance. He believed me. After we were in the ambulance, one of the other guys said, "Btw, my partner lied. His not the son of Christ. He's the son of the anti-Christ. You're on your way to hell.
@MatronTLH Well, sometimes they don't really mean much harm... it depends imo. what exactly they've done described as done because it is "fun". (went into homes a few times. I don't mean as a patient.)
Latttallia, the pts. u "deal with" in the nursing home r people who have memory issues, not "Crap". They did not choose to live there. Your job is to respect those people & provide care for them, not belittle them. If u can't handle the heat, get out of the fire & choose a different career path that doesn't require empathy. HIPA should make sure that u never have the opportunity to publish info about your pts. again.
@junecreedon Lattallia is not belittling them, simply venting and using humor which is a healthy way to cope. No personal identifying information is given which would be a HIPAA violation. While sitting up there on your high throne of judgement have you thought that Lattallia could be a very kind, caring, loving nurse that simply needed a healthy release from stress? And now has someone like you belittling her? Shame on you.
@junecreedon No violation here. Generic/fake name, generic but very real situation for a patient who exists in every single city across the world. Relax.
I had a patient call 911 at 0430ish because she thought we were holding her and her daughter hostage. Needless to say, someone gave her Ambien before bed! The FDA should pull that junk!
I get patients like that all the time! I was asking a patient one time who the president is what year and he got pissed and said what the hell does that have to do with this transport your just an ambulance driver you don't need to know that man that pissed me off
real classy ridiculing someone for manifestations of progressive cognitive disability that are quite certainly more frustrating for them than they are for you.
@eskrav very well put. We will all be there someday & these people's callousness to this heart wrenching condition sickens me. I know your job is stressful. Take your frustrations out at the gym, go for a run, swim. Whatever u do remember the golden rule, DO UNTO OTHERS AS U WOULD WANT DONE ONTO U. Your day is coming.
