  • So I was wanting to buy this lens for wedding photography. Would this lens be great for it? Plz reply thanks

  • @mervie17 No, I don't think it will be good for that.

  • Your computer screen is very dirty!

  • I bet this guy who review this lens is from Indonesia hahahaha

  • @maklokiper , what's wrong with Indonesian??? make your own review if you capable of...

  • save a few more pennies and get the L version

  • @Made4DBZ33 thats what i did and it is an amazing lens

  • This lens hooked up with Canon EOS 450D is SEX

  • It is sealed against dust or moisture??

  • iD series wat the hell are those it's 1D series my friend lol

  • your Filipino arent you? your mixing the f's with the p's. XD

  • @vashy101: doesn't sound filipino to me

  • "USM is great for low light conditions. " @0:32 I just learned something new ..sigh

  • @photoboy666 LOL!

  • Seriously, you are really lost. You say that the closest range of this lens is "0.3mm" but it is "0.3m" and you said "We have to put up the shutter speed to 160mm"

    SHUTTER SPEED? 160mm?

    Christ..

  • haha it suppose to be 1/160.

  • @AndreasFehrm

i am sure its a language problem.. english is clearly not his first language.

  • @AndreasFehrm

No he won the nobel prize hahahahaha!!!

  • Is it good, but the focal length could be too long for full body portrait especially if you mount it on crop sensor camera (95% DSLR in the market has crop sensor).

  • Good review. I believe with this lens (160mm equiv) behaves like a quite substantial telephoto lens, and having it with f/2.8 capabilty makes is a telephoto bargain for the price. However, I am wondering if this is a flexible enough lens for macro. I am sure it is great for photographing butterflies, because you can't get close to such subject as you can scare it away. But I think for stationary objects (watches, coins) a 50 or 60mm macro lens would be appropriate. What do you think?

  • it is also good, but you need more space. if majority of ur work is indoor, look at ef-s 60mm. But if it is 50-50 get the 100mm

  • L lenses quality are good, no doubt about it. but it is also a way for Canon to justify higher price than it should be. It is also heavier.

few years ago, I got 17-55mm IS and 85mm /1.8. The combination is great, the zoom is good for portrait/general photography (it is a low light monster) and the 85mm is for head and shoulder portrait and candids.

Unfortunately, the combo is about $250 more expensive than 24-70mm L f/2.8

if you only going after one lens probably that is the best choice.

  • Guys, I want to know if this lens(particularly the "late 2009 model/Hybrid IS Model") can handle "everyday" photography

you know, portraiture, landscape photography and the like...

The new model is around $1K

BUT, the following are also on the $1K range:

    Canon 70-200mm non-IS USM f/2.8L

    Canon 24-70mm USM f/2.8L

    Canon 70-200mm IS USM f/4.0L

    please help me:D

  • 100mm will not a flexible choice for everyday photography, Zoom lenses around 24-120mm are

  • Good point... I guess I just need to choose between these three:

    24-70mm f/2.8L USM

    70-200mm non-IS f/2.8L USM

    70-200mm IS f/2.8L USM(second hand XD)

  • hehe or get both. btw, when i say 24mm - 120mm it means 15-85mm for Canon. Canon just launch 15-85mm IS USM which is great for walk around lens.

If you have Canon full frame like 5D, then the best might be 24-105mm f4 IS USM.

If you have crop frame (40D/50D, rebels) then the best is 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM or if you don't need the f/2.8 then take 15-85mm.

  • Uhmmm, the lens I want are on the L line-up

My friend has this wide-angle L lens attached to his 450D. His photos surpass my 40D's IQ. Me and another Nikonian friend of mine were like: WTF.

the 24-105 is a good lens but it's aperture is f/4.0. It's not big enough to stop action(IS only helps solve camera shake)

BUT, I won't really need IS since I will also get a 420EX/580EX(maybe a second hand one... I don't want to spend too much on a flash xD)

well, that's just my opinion :D

  • yes, it depends on what kind of things that you shoot, for landscape, you will likely to shoot at small aperture (f/8 or f/16) to get more depth of field and image quality. so f4 or 5.6 does not really matter. But actually 24mm = equiv 35mm at 40D might be not the best walk around lens.

  • Bokeh is one of the reasons why I chose the 24-70mm over the f/4.0

I know the f/4.0 can create bokeh too but a lens with an aperture of f/2.8 will give "easier and better" bokeh

    I'm actually okay with the fact that I own a aps-c camera(1.6x)

35mm aint wide but it still has the potential to capture full body shots :D

p.s. If I was ridiculously rich, I'll buy both of the 24-70 and the 24-105. :DDD

  • haha, you probably won't need to have both lenses. if you want maximize on bokeh, prime lens like 85mm f/1.8 is great. and less than $400

  • I already have a 50mm f/1.8 II (it's not USM though)

Well, an 85mm prime is less flexible against a 24-70mm f/2.8L USM. Plus, it's an L lens. No one, I mean, NO ONE, can go wrong with any L lens.

Well, I just wanted a zoom lens capable of creating great bokeh and at the same time, wide enough to cover full body length shots and close-ups!

    xD

oh, we have flooded this video LOL.

  • what is the point of this comment?

  • I think... someone was asking me something or I was asking someone of something. This was already 2 months ago:/ how can I remember. [lol]

  • Sometimes, there is a trade off between versatility and quality. For example, Prime lenses are more likely to perform better when you shoot at f/2.8. at f4 they are tack sharp. For zoom lens, you usually need to go up to f/5.6 or f8.

Ironically, sometimes, you want the image to be a bit soft, with great bokeh rendering. (for girl portraits) So it becomes more pleasing to look at.

The best practice is to use lens that appropriate for each condition and what you want to achieve.

  • you have such a strong indonesian accent! ahhaha. good job though. thanks for the review =)

  • I love this lens, it's such a big step up from the kit lens off my 1000d.

  • is it worth of money?? I have 450d with 18-55IS, and I dont know what to do...

  • If you're interested in Macro Photography, then I would recommend it. I just purchased mine after a very long period of foruming and reading reviews on what would be the best lens etc .....

There are a couple of others out there that are good too .... but this is a popular one that has received very VERY good user reviews.

  • Yes, the 18-55 is one of the most horrible lenses out there compared to the rest of the EF/EFS series of lenses. Then again, it depends - if you want good images in most cases you can't skimp off getting cheap lenses.

  • I would suggest upgrading camera bodies to more professional quality before the lenses. I have found that with the lower level bodies, you don.t get the benefit out of the more expensive lenses.

I dont personally have one of these lenses yet, but I would be looking into the camera bodies if you can afford it. You will be surprised with the quality images you can get out of the more entry level lenses with a more professional body.

  • horass nice lens

  • you can't zoom, it is a fixed focal length lens.

  • Major fail. Did you seriously buy one if you don't even know what it is?

  • Comment removed

  • It is a 100mm lens, no zooming dude. You should get your facts straight

  • i have this lens....i think it's the great macro lens of canon...with good price

    bye :)

  • Nice useful review, thank you!
