They must have been good because for the last 20 years at least all those who were in the music press at the time and who now run the TV companies and media (and probably got treated quite badly by The Strangsin their Junior Reporter phase) have been desperate to bury the memory of the band. Tony Wilson, Jon Savage etc. The Stranglers were THE band every one listened to in my latter school days. At some stage they will get the appreciation they deserve but probably not this side of the grave

The most under rated British band ever, I feel sorry anyone who never experienced The stranglers in their prime, they were always ahead of the game. Absolutely brilliant live, be it in the basement of some crappy London pub or Battersea Park, there is nothing or no one today who can match them. They have been a part of my life for over 30 years, long may it continue..............

I'm not sure about the Stranglers being underrated, or JJ being the unsing hero of the bass. The band were rated highly, and JJ's trademark bass has always been inspirational. Ever tried to get your bass sounding like that? When all's said and done, they enjoyed deserved popularity and success and are still respected to this day. They were a fun band. No political stance, just bloody good music.

Forestamtul, perfect example of why singing is the least important part of a song, Dionne Warwick obviously has a better voice than Hugh, but the Stranglers version is 1000 times better. Everyone, stop watching American Idol shite and dicsover real music & creativity like the Stranglers!!!

I always said that this vesion was a spoof of Light my Fire. If you listen closely you will notice both the guitar and keyboard solos are done in the same sequence. Both songs are pure classics
