The lyrics reflect Cornell's obsessive fear of dying. It's all over his Soundgarden lyrics, e.g. "the lives we make never seem to ever get us anywhere but dead", "grow and decay, it's only forever". Here he seems to be denying the reality of death by saying there's no such thing as nothing. And he says he can't throw away his life, meaning he can't commit suicide?
