lmao... virtually all mammals have salivary glands. raccoons don't need water to eat their food. it's a redneck myth that raccoons have to dip their food in water.
raccoons, like all other animals, use the enzymes in their saliva to help breakdown food and aid digestion.
raccoons also clean their fur with their tongues, and get plenty of saliva all over themselves!
please tell your mom she needs to stop drinking. ; P

LOLz... sorry, but raccoons make plenty of saliva. that's how they spit when they're angry, clean their fur, and breakdown their food.
also, vets check the SALIVA of raccoons when testing for rabies.
of course, you and your mom probably think that the black mask on a raccoon is removable. : P

all coons are born with that surly disposition. they don't really turn mean. as they get older they're just a little more vocal about having things their way.

i think it's just an instinct thing. they do like feeling the food in their paws and rubbing it, and they don't necessarily have to have water around to eat it.
when Willie catches bugs, he rolls them around until they're pretty much dead, then he bites their heads off!!! lol
he also loves to roll coins around in his paws and then he stuffs them in my shoes! ha-ha! really!

Heh, heh...he doesn't want to be a pet. Raccoons are cute ( they have "hands"! ), but they are wild animals. They are very cleaver, and learn quickly, but you can't cuddle with them. They have sharp claws and sharp teeth, and thick fur.
