Finally did it! Thanks for your video, it helped me a lot learning this song on guitar (by myself)! Now I can't stop playing this beautiful tradtional russian piece! Thanks :D
Can you tell me what kind of balalaika are you playing? I know that there is bass tener and saprono. I have a balalaika my grandfather passed down to me and it looks similar to yours so can you tell me what kind it is. It would be very helpful. Sorry for my spelling mistakes.
@kpcart Thank you very much I will be learning soon how to play and I should know as much as I can about the instrument I'll be playing. My grandfather left it to me along with a mandolin I thought I would start with the balalaika. Thank you for responding. Merry Christmas!! Happy New Year
i've heard this song so many times, but never really liked it before. i even had to double check it was the same one. this is the greatest version i've ever heard and it's also my new favourite song. man you're amazing.
S*** that instrument is deadly I'm going to order one of ebay, it sounds like an Irish mandoline with a bouzouki neck, how much would a decent one cost me?
It is easy to learn HOW to play. It is a simple instrument. To play to virtuoso standard takes more dilligent practice than, say, a guitar. It is well worth the effort. It is the most beautiful instrument on the planet.
Great Playing. I got a balalaika prima recently, and I just learn to play it. I strung it with nylon strings, but it came with steel ones (30 year old ones!). Wich would you recomend? Thank you.
use a steel string for the first string (about011 gauge) and use 2 nylon strings (the 3rd (g) string from a classical guitar is perfect for the other 2 strings. Tune A,E,E
I didn't know this was Russian. When I last heard this piece it was done by some early 60's spaghetti western orchestra, complete with lots of spring reverb, thundering deep baritone electric guitar, and those chambered kettle drums! God I wish I could just remember where I heard it from! It sounded absolutely amazing!
mines a bit newer, but there were many bad ones made, usually you can tell the cheaper ones, the fret board ends where body starts, and they come with al metal strings. and also dont have a scratch board.
This is good, but also weird how the player plays like a Western guitarist; he does not use his left thumb, and his strumming technique is very individual.
Hey, the individual musicians always stand out, right?
By the way, may I request that someone posts the playing of Ukrainian Hopak on balalaika please? I am trying to learn it but it is very difficult, and it would be very inspirational to hear it played.
Ehy .. how do u kno how to tune?... I really wud like to tune my balalaika.. I just started.. and it wud be great if you can make a video or help me out somehow to show me what each string sounds like tuned :D
For Prima Balaika size (like the one i use), top string (metal one) is tuned to an A. second and third strings (both nylon) are tuned to an E (like first string on guitar).
Sounds better than my balalaika which i think is some sort of souvenir type instrument. Where was yours made & is it an expensive one? Is the A string steel and the E strings nylon?
I LOVE IT.

what's the tuning on a balalaika?
tubelogin1 3 years ago
A (like on 5th fret guitar), E,E (both the same pitch as first string E on guitar).
kpcart 3 years ago
that's insane. thanks! wow! two same strings, huh and just 3 of them. that doesn't seem easy at all.
