Frank, you gotta love a guy like you that is so dedicated to helping people learn. I love your enthusiasm as well! I am playing a gig tomorrow and I knew this song already, but it's been so long since I played it and needed a refresher. I checked out your video and caught up right away. You know how it is, if you don't play a song for a long time, it's to get right away! Thanks mate!
@splitneyboria, friend we were all beginners at one time. If Frank is going to fast, it's not really because he's going to fast or not explaining enough. As beginners, we never consider that there is simply too much info coming at one time. After you have been doing this for a while, you will hear a guy like Frank speak and you will get it all right away. It's been months since you posted this, but if you're still having trouble, I would telling you to concentrate on chords and scales.
passion alright, sounds like this is your life, thank you so much for not only a great lesson but for showing what great things playing the guitar can bring, never stop with your inspiring spirit frank, thanks a lot :)
OMG this is the easiest approach to the song that sounds amazing! Thank you Frank. I love you aussies! Hell, the woman I'm in love with is from Australia too! Just another reason why it's an amazin country. God bless your talent and humbleness. Take it easy and one day not too far from now, I will post a video of me singing this song thanks to your tutelage. I'll credit you greatly. Now I"ll be more than just a singer with this song. God bless!
I like this guy, but my personal analysis is different. In the key of Eb
Intro - Ebadd9
Verse Eb - Cm - Ab - G7: Repeat.
Chorus Ab - Bb - Eb
The reason this song is so great is because it takes the EXTREMELY overdone chord progression I vi IV V (possibly most famous in Stand By Me by Ben E. King) and focuses on its relative minor. Therefore beginning on the I, but continuously cadencing on the vi (with the V7/vi occurring as a phrygian cadence). This gives the song a melancholy feel throughout.
I wish there was an instruction video for this song on the Trumpet. That's the instrument I play. I just love this song and would like to see a trumpet video for it.
Dude thanks from Down under. Thanks also for the pep talk as far as keeping disciplined at playing the guitar. I play for a while stop and have a problem keeping at it. If your ever in Jupiter Fla. let me know and I will buy you a beer! Thanks bud!
I learned this song some time ago because I wanted to win a charming girl´s heart. I love this song but the problem is that the pitch in order to sing is TOO HIGH and I can´t reach it ( I think the majority of the people can´t sing as high as Mr. Finn) Any recommendation or advice on what lower chords to use in a lower key ?
This is not a vocal lesson. But it is to give you a indication of the sequence of chords in "Dont Dream it's Over" . It's more for guidance. You can lower a octave but has not the same effect. I will be releasing a EP soon. If you want vocals you will get it here. Cheers. FF
I was replying to a comment from "exionem." I wasn't refering to your video. The song "Don't dream its over" sounds much better with the bar chords in my opinion, that is how it was originally played. The open chords don't sound quite the same.
wicked video mate, love your enthusiasm! Just wondering if you would post the chords as a message so I know I'm getting them just right! Thanks a lot dude,
omg i love you lol im 2 yrs late from when you first posted this, but its ok. I rly love this song its so awesome! learned it in a few minutes and put it all into TAB form. This song made me pick up the guitar again after a while. ty ty ty!
Hi Frank, i want to say a huge thanks to you for sharing great music with gusto, inspiration and energy - this world is a better place because of you. Sincere good wishes from Dublin, Ireland. Brian
Greetings, to my friends down under, from America! You keep them parakeets, cockatiels, and kangaroos whipped into shape. You keep 'em in line- especially the parakeets! Don't let them get too beak-happy! Crowded House forever! Australia and New Zealand forever! And JetsonG forever!
I am recording a CD at present. Plus, i have a Myspace page (details on my main page at Youtube. I don't have a teachers website as such. Please subscribe, and add me as a friend so you keep in the loop more simply. I will be reviewing my web prescence. Cheers
I found it after I posted, maybe a bit of research would help before I post yes? LOL anyway, thanks for the response, and you have been subscribed to!
Hey Frank. Neil Finn = New Zealand. Love the video, in particular the chat and background you do is excellent. I cant remember seeing another video like yours, with motivation and passion, its absolutely "top shelf stuff"!
Swalk82 thanks for sub'ing man. These are both Bar chords, and if you are only just starting out, will be a challenge. Rewind the video, take it slowly. Finger the strings as noted, as i have clearly explained the finger positioning. The challenge is getting Bars down correctly. This will be our focus for the next lesson. The song will be the America classic "Sister Golden Hair".
mate, thanx 4 sharing this!my playing has been a little dull lately due to lack of inspiration and motivation..but,tonite you motivated my spirit to fall in love with my beloved guitar all over again..CHEERS,Mate..!
I love your attitude, Man! Nice, easy to follow, and passable version of the song for beginners and intermediates. People need to learn a song to start loving to play guitar, and that is what you are spreading around. It's not rocket science, is it? Having fun and expressing yourself through a song, whether is a cover, original, or whatever... That love, that's life, and that's the pursuit of happiness. Thanks Neil!
Neil and Tim are Kiwis, but there were also Aussie members, such as Paul Hester, and it was formed it Melbourne, so really, what does that make it? It's a very universal band and I love the fact that such a great band came from this part of the earth. Whoever says we don't produce good music has got rocks in their head. :P Love Crowded House!
Dude, I have stopped and started this feed a hundred times...my wife is ready to kill me! But, the song is starting to come together. Wow, thanks again! Jon Byrnes, Dallas, TX.
hahahha Go get em man! Glad the Mrs is understanding! This is what i am talking about. Excellent feedback!. If you get a chance, get a good teacher for some one on one teaching. To much on your own on the internet, can be hard. Good luck Jon.
Show where your fingers are more clearly. because my chords can't sound like yours from what you describe? or mabye you are out of tune? but appreciate your time. thanks
your right we got to ude the pause and rewind button. never mind you helped me alot thank thank you. Timing is everything. when I've conquourd my timeing and singing in sync I'll post my rewards
You're my hero Frank! Can't thank you enough for this... feel as though I should mail you a check!!! After failing miserably at the guitar for years, it's actually coming together for me and I have you to thank. Jeff from Wisconsin USA
hahaha~LOL ~ you guys crack me up. Its true though. Gotta get that message to my attentive pupils. Remember a old Chinese proverb: The tongue can paint what the eye can't see.

Just an idea. What if you kept the same chords but lowered your singing one octave. You would still be in the key and would sound good.
