It wasn't that they had to "figure out" anything... they simply changed marketing strategy. A number of stations don't use their true channel number in their on-air branding. The best example comes from San Diego, where 3 of the 6 major stations are UHF, but pretend to be VHF.
Nah it was 9/16/02 when they went to the graphics that they sometimes use in their current promos which look like the current knbc gfx but they are older
I JUST NOTICED TODAY!! They got rid of the NBC11 theme song (the one in this around the beginning) and replaced it with a more classic Nightly News sorta theme... I liked this theme... it was more catchy...
the WNBC 2003 package is awful for the bay area, especially that cut of it (which is used for telemundo stations) they should keep the tower and just transition to tower v. 3 in 2008.
Channel 3 is where they were added to most cable systems when they joined NBC. At the time the transmitter was located just south of San Jose, so the station was not avaliabe over the air from about the San Mateo Bidge north. So, Granite decided to brand it by it's cable channel location. NBC had just recently bought KNTV before I recorded this and they were not impressed with the virual channel branding, so it was switched to NBC 11 in the fall.
Actually, I had been watching channel 11 in the Gill Cable days (when they were an ABC station) on cable channel 3 circa 1976 - 1979 at least. They wanted to use the lower (and thus more sought after VHF channel) but it conflicted with KCRA
(the Sacramento NBC station). Also I heard many years ago that the Navy was sometimes broadcasting on VHF 3. If watching an an analog signal on 2 or 3
(which both came in weak down here) you could hear intermittent naval communications between the static.
They borrowed the NBC O&O Graphics used by KNBC and WMAQ.

@SkylineToTheSeaAndMe Wow every Time I hear the Tower Theme I keep think about Paul Moyer on KNBC.

Also because of the name, NBC3 was another news station already in Sacromento. So the name could also not be used again.

Do you have the talent open with lissa aswell?
Stealthguy06 4 years ago
how long did they go with the "virtual channel" perception?
puck220 4 years ago
It was only for their first few months as an NBC O&O. They rebranded to NBC 11 News in the fall of 2002.
