Call me a conspiracy theorist but I still think that since EVERYBODY wanted Fantasia to win they fixed it to where Diana would mess up on this song, because the week prior to that she NAILED this performance.
she might have lost it to fantasia at 1:39-1:41 where it is horribly off pitch. she is a good singer with a powerful voice but i've noticed she will, singing live, make at least 1 pitchy mistake like this per performance, which is probably what locked it up for fantasia
Diana was way better than Fantasia NO QUESTION! and even though she didn't win, she still is an awesome singer, remember you don't have to win this show to be a singer, look at how many people didn't win and still have careers. :)
I didn't think that her version of this was that bad, yeah she had a little trouble at some parts, but it still was good! This is a tough song to sing, and I think she did a great job! I wish more singers would do this type of music nowadays, we need more music that is relaxing and romantic! that is why I love the 70's music, it was so relaxing.

The first time that she sang this song, which was on Top 3, was flawless. In addition, maybe she got nervous because the judges had said that Fantasia was the best contestant that had ever been on Idol competitions.
This was sad because her earpeice was too loud and she couldnt hear .. I will always remember this performance.. Diana would have won had it not been for the sucky technical elements of this show.. Lets remember this was the first year they went to the BIG stage...for the finale...

Beauty and vocal prowess are part of it, but performance impact, the person's background or something else affect his/her APPEAL. Fantasia was probably more people APPEALING to people (especially die-hard voters) probably because of her "choir-like" energy on stage which made her earn more votes than Diana. 'Love 'em both...

I really hate the way the judges handled this. They all acted like jerks about the pitchy part. To be honest with you, it was like....one word where she screwed it up, usually that wouldn't get such a big deal made of it. And Simon's comments were really insensitive to her. I can't help but feel like they just really wanted Fantasia to win after watching this back now :/

AI is a singing competition, not just performance. Diana deserved the win. After Kelly won, the following winners (most of them) should have been the runner ups. Clay should have won. Diana should have won. Katharine should have won over Taylor. David Archuleta should have won. Adam Lambert should have won. Great singing and performer. Crystal should have won. It's rigged IMO. The ones that win Need the AI title behind their names because they may not survive without it.

this is beautiful. i don't get why she lost to fantasia. to me, it sounds like diana actually sings, while fantasia mixes painful screeches in with actual singing.
fantasia has a fanbase that grew substantially throughout the show.
the issue with diana was that her fanbase wouldn't stick with her during the voting processes.
if you watch her tally, she came so close to the bottom twice, i think. i'm not how many times fantasia did. however, with diana, her fanbase was minimal, most of her votes came from people voting for her after their favourites were eliminated, or based on how well she performed.
@lalaleeka Actually I think Diana did win a lot of people over... she was in the bottom three only earlier in the competition, then eventually started coming out on top. Fantasia was actually in the bottom two twice towards that latter part of the show because her votes were split. But you are right, in the end she did gain more votes because most likely Jennifer Hudson's and Latoya's votes went to her after they were eliminated.

Her ear piece had some sort of a problem because she stepped out of the zone it covered. I remember her talking about how contestants on AI now have in-ear monitors, I bet if she had that this wouldn't have happened.
Diana could have sung a million more circles around Fantasia than she did that night, but the judges would have still pimped her out, as per the producers' orders.
1:39-1:42 is the "middle of the song" the judges were referring to. She butchered the notes there. She did hit the higher notes just fine and he has good power control, but that was... ew.
I shouldn't be too hard on Diana...she can sing as well or better than many of the artists out there nowadays...she will become more consistent as she matures

I'll admit she got fuzzy there in the middle, but for someone who's equipment stopped working she managed to salvage it. The ending was very powerful and on pitch. Of course it wasn't as good as her previous rendition, but it wasn't a total trainwreck.
Ehh not exactly. In Katharine's case, IIRC, the earpiece didn't work when she was supposed to start her song so she didn't know what note to start on for the beginning a capella part of SOTR. Here with Diana, the earpiece supposedly messes up in the middle of the song.

fantasia has a fanbase that grew substantially throughout the show.
the issue with diana was that her fanbase wouldn't stick with her during the voting processes.
if you watch her tally, she came so close to the bottom twice, i think. i'm not how many times fantasia did. however, with diana, her fanbase was minimal, most of her votes came from people voting for her after their favourites were eliminated, or based on how well she performed.
this is why fantasia was guaranteed a win.

@lalaleeka Actually I think Diana did win a lot of people over... she was in the bottom three only earlier in the competition, then eventually started coming out on top. Fantasia was actually in the bottom two twice towards that latter part of the show because her votes were split. But you are right, in the end she did gain more votes because most likely Jennifer Hudson's and Latoya's votes went to her after they were eliminated.

I'm not going to say Fantasia shouldn't have won because she is in fact a great singer. Unfortunately I feel Diana handed her the competition with this perfomance. It was such a disappointment compared to the first time she sang it. The first time she sang this, I think it was one of the most technically perfect songs ever performed on American Idol. I wonder if things would have been different if she performed it equally as well on finale night...

Her ear piece had some sort of a problem because she stepped out of the zone it covered. I remember her talking about how contestants on AI now have in-ear monitors, I bet if she had that this wouldn't have happened.
Diana could have sung a million more circles around Fantasia than she did that night, but the judges would have still pimped her out, as per the producers' orders.

Wow, fucking ignorant. The earpiece is used to dilute the background music so the singer can hear their own voice. Notice how people who listen to their music on headphones with the volume turned all the way up have a tendency to speak louder? That's because they can't hear their own voice.

I'll admit she got fuzzy there in the middle, but for someone who's equipment stopped working she managed to salvage it. The ending was very powerful and on pitch. Of course it wasn't as good as her previous rendition, but it wasn't a total trainwreck.

Ehh not exactly. In Katharine's case, IIRC, the earpiece didn't work when she was supposed to start her song so she didn't know what note to start on for the beginning a capella part of SOTR. Here with Diana, the earpiece supposedly messes up in the middle of the song.
