I might get something like this and put netting or a roof rack for a jeep in the gaps for extra storage. I'm making a survival canoe, this might make things easier.

For cross beams I used ash wood. At first, like on the picture, they were 1'' x 1 3/4'' x 10ft long. This winter I have beefed them up. now the are 2'' x 1 3/4'' x 10 ft long. I dis that because they were wiggling in waves.
