There was a characteristic known as decency in that era, Alas, non-existent now. Tibbett did not need to exhibit his well-toned physique since his superb singing, unheard on the opera stage today, established the reason that he was considered a stellar baritone
Who says that singers only sing under a shower?? And with a toucan forming a duet!! Hey, wait a minute, there's a toad too, then it's a duet no more! Now, behold a plane motor bruit ... and here comes a lady! Oh, never mind, it's all very amusing. Teeheehee.
I love the celesta at the beginning, enchanting. I love to hear him having fun with his voice. Too bad they gave the toucan the voice of a chicken x parrot. That's the lovely Wendy Barrie with him. Funny how in those days women were expected to act like children (sulking).
I notice that he is constantly trying to hide his body from the lady. Is this the custom of the era? Was it de rigeur to not show your body to a lady or something?
And just to be clear. I am a voice teacher and teach registration. I know what falsetto is. And, actually, the high E he sings in falsetto and then the OH goes into a little bit of chest on the word "FIGARO".
Well, that depends on YOUR definition of those things. Headvoice is what women sing in and it has some chest in it. The whole thing is in chest, but he covers as he goes higher. The top note are in falsetto.
Let's hope not. I am also a voice teacher. Such pedagogical talk rarely makes appearance in lessons, and, when learning to sing requires discussion like that above......god help us all. I guess I am a tad unorthodox.
Well, I rarely talk about it in lessons as well, but as a voice teacher it is your job to know how these things work; and the students need to have a clue about how their voices function as well even if not in full anatomical detail.
That's interesting, my teacher is similar but again has his differences with Reid. Where did you learn about registration? They do not appear to teach it correctly if at all in British music colleges. Do you think Tibbett was taught to physically exercise the falsetto and blend with the chest or was he just naturally coordinated? All I have read is that his teacher got him to sing the vowels as if they were in his own accent, rather than fretting about the Italian.
I think that it is clear that he had a developed falsetto because he sings it in this clip. I am sure they worked on it, but maybe called it "head voice" or whatever else.
They rarely teach registration anywhere, not just in the UK. And the results of that speak for themselves. You can PM me about this stuff if you like.
Gordon MacRae had a beautiful falsetto. I understand he was offered a positon at he Met but decided to make movies in Hollywood so he could play golf most of the year.
Dear me, I wish I was in that water with him, least I could do is help him wash his back.

Now that is a funny, romantic ending. Today's Hollywood has lost the art of subtlety. Sometimes, a little goes a longgg way.

No. The movie censors were reeeeal strict about what could be shown in a film.

I'm also a baritone. Nowadays A Tibbett is very hard to match.
Johnny1206 3 years ago
Tibbett made several Hollywood films and was even nominated for an Academy Award (1932, I think) for best actor.

Alas, the Golden Age of singing no longer exists. Tibett, Gigli, Schipa, Bjorling, Borgioli, no one since that period could or can match them.

Listen to that highly developed falsetto register!
MrCafiero 4 years ago
that is not falsetto
maxasian 4 years ago
That is absolutely falsetto. No doubt. Falsetto is a lack of thyroarytnoid (chest) where on the edges of the vocal folds vibrate.

And just to be clear. I am a voice teacher and teach registration. I know what falsetto is. And, actually, the high E he sings in falsetto and then the OH goes into a little bit of chest on the word "FIGARO".

Only the three notes are falsetto, and the rest of notes are head voice.
