Oh..just one more thing. You mentioned one could "easily go to Noganosh" from Island Lake. It's true that there's only one two portages: Island to Kelsie, then Kelsie to John Lake (which leads to Noganosh without having to portage), but the first is over a kilometre and the one from Kelsie into John lake is brutal: hilly, completely overgrown, hard to find and long. We blazed it once to make it easier to follow. Definitely not "easy".
@PineMartyn Yes, I should have said "it is possible". I've heard stories about those portages, so I'm sure it would involve quite the amount of work to get through there. Though I plan on a few exploratory trips next summer to re-open some routes. Armed with ax, saw and flagging tape I've got a loop trip idea about following the Still River out of Noganosh then back into Noganosh via the Magnetewan and those portages.
@PineMartyn Also, a new route in QEWII and I plan on exploring the Grants/Mackey creek system north of Algonquin. Mackey creek has been seldom touched in the last 30 years since it was a canoe route from what I've heard.
Also, I'm thinking on the spot usually for these takes, often I look at the map and remark how possible it would be to get somewhere and then mention it if I've shown portages and campsites on the maps I've made up.
Another really nice video...this time of my absolute favourite lake system. My wife and I, and friends, have camped there many times. If you ever go return, make your way to the northern shore of Island lake and continue paddling up Farm creek north all the way to the Loon Lakes. Portages aren't too bad, there's lots to explore, some old logging equipment left behind and float planes seldom appear. I've a detailed trip log with photos on my blog of a 10-day trip we took to Island and Loon.
Great video! My friend and I own the log cabin(with the new dock) on the large island halfway up the west side of Island Lake. The little lake between Dutton(Cross) and Island Lakes is Myrtle Lake. There is an alternate portage that doesn't require walking over the metal bridge.
@ShutUpAndFishCanada I tend to make them myself from data online, guidebooks and others trip reports. I overlay known campsites and portages on topo maps to print off. Do this in the winter when I can plan whats up for next season. If you want a copy of some route maps just message me.
