god damn, how did i forget about this project?!?!?!?! I saw these guys live a few years back, very incredible. I was like 16. Now I'm 19, and I feel like I can actually appreciate the slight shift in genres as opposed to Bright Eyes. This really is incredible.
Don't you ever trust an eagle on a pole. Why not ... why not!? Cuz when you're least expecting it will swoop down and take a dump on your head, that's why not.

My oversized Bob Dylan poster above my head agrees with klkool1, Conor Oberst isn't the new Bob Dylan, Conor Oberst is the first, and only, Conor Oberst. It's like saying that Criss Angel is the new Evel Knievel.
Why the fawk should you compare these songs? The only thing they have in common is the titel and the opening line. It's not even the same person who wrote it. It's not even another "version". It's an entirely different song. On an entirely different album. With an entirely different sound.
great observation AND you said something ALMOST worth saying, if you love this band soo fucking much then you would know that this is a new song for the new record with the same name :]
no... i remember in the documentary conor says someone i forget who said today i saw an eagle on a pole, i think it was an eagle and he was like "hey thats a good idea for a song" so he wrote it...
Conor and catchy do not go together. Catchy refers more to the melody and sound, when I get "caught" by Conor's work it is ALWAYS from the lyrics and the sincerity in his voice. The imperfections are good.
You're right it is catchier but that doesn't really make it better. I often find myself humming this out of nowhere but I do prefer the other version.
One last thing, I drank 15 beers that night and I think I was more sober than everyone on stage but the keyboardist. The guitarist to conor's left was straight junked up, the rest looked drunk as hell, maybe more. At least conor is off the coke apparently. Anyway, cheers to anyone else who was there!
haha me too I had about half a litre of whiskey and a few beers and it was nothing...the guitarist you mention (Taylor) was introdcued by conor first saying say hello, its not his fault he dropped all that acid before the show...
Saw them live the other night in Tempe. All the band members, besides Conor (and maybe one of the guitarists) sang on this song, rotating each verse. It was definitely different. The sound at the venue was mediocre so it was hard to make out the lyrics, I wasn't even sure it was this song. But yeah... live they preform it with all of them singing, minus Conor. Their encore also consisted at least 1-2 songs without Conor singing and other members of the band. Overall, great show.
I agree with Aleexr, I've relistened to this song countless times & it's grown on me. I still can't say I like it as much as I like some of his other songs, but it's not terrible
wait a second. I have gone from thinking this was terrible to thinking it is insanely good. I can't stop singing it. All the Mystic Valley Band are talented as fuck, this was a great move by Conor. The gamble paid off... this album is just amazing.
actually relistening it's pretty good. Infact it is very good. It's just the fact that those opening lyrics you asccosiate with Conor's voice so it makes it weird at the start.
Yet to hear a song by them that I did not like.

@heyjude97 I get what you're doing with the analogy there, but it is a crime to compare Conor Oberst to/with Criss Angel, even in the vaguest way.

They're both great though.

The first one was bad..
This one took me a couple listens and i started loving it.
this album is great
and i'm also one of the biggest Bright Eyes fans ever, so don't go there
BermudaMuzic 2 years ago
I love Conor's version of Eagle On A Pole. This version is definitely sub-par but still great.

theres nothing wrong with the first one. being critical of other peoples music does not make you any smarter or better at making it prick.
