@mbran111 Well it's a line from "Negativland" which was the early version of Blast Off. It goes "been to the bottom of the well now i'm looking for a better tune, so why am i still feeling blue?" Brians "sit back and light up a fat one..." line is from the early drafts of the song too.
@johnmorisi8 can't agree. brian sounds great here (and elsewhere, for that matter), and having rivers sing the whole thing would kinda go against the whole "characters" thing going on in the song.
Well I like Brian's backing voice, but it seems he tries so hard when he has the lead (he has a good voice, but just not for the Weezer 90s Alt Rock sound). It'd be ideal if Weezer collaborated with the Rentals, and re-did all the songs from the black hole... cause then they could have Matt Sharp's awesome vocal, and Jamie Blake for the girl vocal in those songs.
Back then Brian's voice wasn't all cocky sounding. Brian sounds like he wants to be a classic rock star, yet he is in Weezer . That's the problem with Weezer's members, they don't know their role, every year they suffer from a new identity crisis. And if you listen to Songs About Time (rentals newest album), Matt is doing his own sound again, unlike his solo album (he grew up). Go listen to Brian's side-band that he fronts, it sounds like dad-rock (remember his emo-cut?).
@johnmorisi8 don't agree. the relationship record is great, the space twins were really good. the rentals were good, but songs about time is just go-nowhere songwriting throughout, to me.
what's this about "knowing their role"? what does THAT mean? brian is given a lead vocal part here and brian bell sings it the way brian bell would sing it. where's the problem?
If you are talking about songwriting (which we weren't), go listen to The Rentals' latest instrumental album Resilience, that album is great. Either way, Songs About Time is better than anything Weezer's put out since Maladroit (besides Red maybe).
First listen to No One Else acoustic, then El Scorcho, and hear how good Brian's voice was. Then listen to Thought I Knew, not bad, but not as good. Then here, he is so overdramatic.
@johnmorisi8 i think your judging his singing too much. the line "its gonna be a long course ship if you act like that" does sound over dramatized but i think he does fine in the other lines. plus, youre comparing backing vocals to lead vocals. hes obviously going to have a different singing style. i see what your saying, his voice doesnt sound cohesive with weezer vocals but his backing vocals fit perfectly
As for the word "role", find a dictionary, open it, then find it... FYI, dictionaries go in alphabetical order.
Here is an example: In a movie like The Truman Show, Jim Carrey could have played the role of Truman like how he did (which was appropriate for the movie), or he could've played the role like how he played Lloyd in Dumb and Dumber, which would've have made the movie have an awkward feel. My point is, Brian's overdramatic voice clashes with the Weezer sound.
You're great at debating, just revert back to previous arguments that already have been disputed and resolved. I guess you couldn't find any better arguments to prove your point. I'm done arguing with you, you just proved that you're nothing but another worthless YouTube troll.
@johnmorisi8 What the fuck? I was having a conversation, I wasn't trying to argue. I like Brian's voice. I don't think it clashes. I hate Matt's current voice. I think his whispery Dylan impression bullshit would clash with this. Mere disagreement - I'm not trying to troll anyone. Being immature about an opinion that differs from yours strikes me as more troll-like than anything.
Brian didn't even want Weezer's take of "Thought I Knew" released, for what it's worth. Rivers insisted
wtf weezer, you play some of your worst songs like beverly hills and i want you to you in new york but then you go to seattle and play amazing songs like this
@lazrpo Karl was actually supposed to play M1, the robot, who was apparently written out of this version. Wuan and Dondo were originally Brian and Matt, though don't ask me which one was which.
I've been to the bottom of the world
What I'm doing is I'm looking for a better tune

Damn, this is really good... but i hate Brians voice, it's too classic rock, Rivers should just sing the whole song.

@johnmorisi8 Brian was supposed to have lead parts on SFTBH, too, and Matt's modern day Dylan impression thing would surely fuck everything up.

@johnmorisi8 funny. all's i was sayin' was i don't agree with what you're saying.
also, i don't see how you can find matt's modern day dylan knockoff voice any more appropriate for weezer than brian's.
