Just because people in the 80s did it doesn't mean you should. Normally you only don't use resonant heads when your on stage and even then it's not necessary because it doesn't carry the tone as well as it should because it's got nothing to resonate against so its insanely rapid decay
Dont spend stupid money on moon gels!! Buy a gel filled keyboard wrist support for typists and remove the fabric covering... then slice up as many as 60 for less than $5!!!! Trust me, it works...same stuff, wash them in boiling water to get their stickyness back!
@KillMagnetic the reason you get more snare buzz with the 12" tom is because the snare buzz reacts most to the higher frequencies. therefore the smaller toms you have there will pick it up more. tightening the snares will definitely help as well as snare plaacement, having bottom heads may actually help a lot more as well. you should always have resonant heads on your drums they play a very important role in the sound. tighten up the snare drum. depends a lot on heads and tuning as well.
It's called resonant frequency. The 12" is closest to the snare's resonant frequency so when you hit it, it corresponds with the snare. Try different tuning.
Lol... seriously... get one of your buddy's who sings and get him/her to try to hit a note with the resonant frequency of the snare and watch them play your snare with their voice.
hey i know you got a new snare but did you think that the drum set would be better than the snare? it came together which means it has the same quality, and then i want to tell you that you got the drum set backwards, if you tom toms were hanging over the bass drum in stead of the snare the way you have them set up the wouldn't resonate as much, and yes you should have the heads on the bottom of the toms, it makes such huge difference in your drums and who give a hoot about the 80's they r gone
Dude you're going to ruin your drums without those resos on there! The tension needs to be equaled out or else they will warp, not to mention that your resos give you all your tone. Unless the drum is MADE without resos, which very few tom toms are, keep those resos on there.
i have a factory snare and it sounds great. its because youre using shitty heads. on your toms use Evans EC2s and on your snare use a Evans Genera HD Dry or Remo Ebony Ambassador or Ebony Suede
Moon gel on the bottom wont control the snares resonation when a tom hits it. I put a piece of electrical tape in between the snare itself and the resonant heads. It gives it a really, really nice pop. I have a piccolo snare and a Peavey standard 500 series snare and I liked it so much I did it to both. Try it out man.
The snare buzz can be from bad snare wires, snare wires or "snares" as there called, are on the bottom of the snare, they may need to be replaced and/or tightend, and did u replace the bottom head of the snare? B/c having a factory snare doesn't mean much, I hav a factory snare and I made it sound great. As for u having no heads on the bottom Tom, tht affects ur toms, it's good to hav ur bottom heads on, but it's not needed, thts a personal choice.
as far as the Buzz is concerned can often be tuning. I find detuning the 4 tuning bolts around the snare wires on the reso head of your snare can reduce buzz and give the snare more bite. fiddle with your tuning on your snare drum, will probably help!
There's nothing wrong with that snare, it prolly has the potential to sound amazing it's just tuning. And especially for eliminating snare buzz it's all in the tuning those rings are just to dampen the top head of the drum it's on.
You get snare buzz because of the high frequencies your 12" tom produces. Watch "Bob Gatzen Broken OpportunitesPart 1 & 2 videos, you'll save a lot of money.
i have the remO's tone control rings and i love them. i have also playedwith the moon gels and i think those work great too! so thats all your choice. either way, itll sound good. now, resonate heads will really help out with the extra ring. they will quiet it down. u could stop the snare buzz by tightening the snare wire but i also recommend a new snare. ddrums make awesome snares btw! so thats my recommendation on how to make the set sound better! i know what im sayin so just try it!
@KillMagnetic hey man quick question on my kit i have the um EC2 evan heads and i was thinking of getting these but i dont know whats the difference between em? if you could help thatd be great man thanks.
Ok, the best way I found to eliminate snare buzz is to uptune your snare drum reso really tight, then very slightly detune the tension bolts either side of the throw and butt plate. Play your 1st rack tom and keep playing with the snare reso tuning until your buzz is gone. Also, adjusting the tension of the snares by using the straps/cords holding them can help too. Hope some of this helps.
0:55 ....KITTY!!!!!...anyways, i understand what you mean by the snare buzzing with the toms...my drums do that too...its just the way it is which is shitty...newayz, good luck with your playing and your music and good vid!
all u need to do is get a snare drum that is either pearl or dw cuz the rest of the companies snares always get the sound to the toms and dw and pearl dont thats why most bands use dw and pearl
yeah i get alot off buzz to on my snare which do you think i should buy with a budget of under £100.00 and the heads ? orrr... any way i can just stop it I usally try putting kitchen towles over them wich deadens the overtone but thats about it can anyone help ???
12 inch tom problem is its higher pitch...try tightening the snares and the bottom head....moongel wont take away buzz itll take away the ringing sound i had the same problem
LOOSEN YOUR TENSION ON THE SNAREWIRES!!!! Loosen them all the way, and then turn about 2 full turns of the knob. what this does is when you hit your snare drum medium hit to hard hit, you will get a good snare drum sound, then once you hit your toms, goodbye buzzing, but this is only good if you don't play ghost notes, cause it doesn't pick them up/
You will notice after getting some good reso's tuned up and sympathizing with your batter, that your toms will have so much more body and emotion. When I first started out, I took off the back heads because I couldn't get it sounding right. Well come to find out I just didn't know how to tune. lol To make a long story short, reso's are just as important as the batter heads. Check out bob gatzen and learn his tuning techniques. Your kit will sound better than ever.
Thanks man but i found my problem a long time ago and again this video was posted 6 months ago so im not having that problem anymore but thanks for watching and caring man that a real drummer right. And for anyone else thats reads this my problems are fixed according to this video. Because the problems with the tom and snare were 6 MONTHS ago so im good on the advice but yet again thanks
Cool cool. So just out of curiosity, are you still playing without the bottom heads? You totally remind me of myself when I first started playing, cuz I didnt think the bottom heads mattered and I was all into the 80's i.e. Metallica, kiss, overkill etc. i remember when I first learned For Whom The Bell Tolls too. lol I wish I could've gotten a hold of the info that I know now about drums and tuning back then......
.......so with that being said, you really, REALLY need to subscribe to Bob Gatzen's channel and watch and learn and apply all of his techniques that you can because they're right, they work, and they will totally transform the way your drums sound. They will also help you to really understand your drums and to have full command of them and how they sound. There's tons of info from him to be learned so go check it out man, you'll be thanking me later.
I just cant afford the resos at the time cuz when i got my new Evans Head i could only have a 50 to 60 dollar limit so i couldnt get the resos but i want them really badly for bout 2 years but havent got a hold of money yet. And i have been friends and talked to bob gatzen many times before like last year and watched every video so im good on tht but thanks for the recommendation.
you will never be able to totally get rid of snare buzz. Its a fact of life. The reason you notice more snare buzz when you hit your 12' is because your snare and the 12 are in the same tone range. Heads sympathize with each other, so if your snare is tuned to an A and a guitarist matches the pitch with an A, then you're going to get a tone response from your snare. And btw all of the tone from a tom comes from the reso head. you should really look into getting some reso's on that thing
theres not much you can do about snare buzz. you could tape the snares which works but makes the snare drum sound like crap. in a live situation the snare buzz wont be noticeable and it shouldnt be to bad on recording
dont waste your money on moongels, they will do the EXACT same thing your control rings do. you will always have snare buzz. but you can do some things to reduce it. it's not the snare drum, I have an old slingerland factory snare thats probably just as "crappy" as yours, but it sounds amazing. spend some extra cash on a better head, and use a hazy 300 on the bottom, there's also snare strands by rhythm tech called active snares. they are designed to always have tension on the stands, less buzz
@LS1mike1997 umm, when i use the rings, it still rings more than i want it to. ALOT more. I use one moongel, and it gets rid of it perfectly. Maybe your just tone deaf.
I was just offering some helpful advice since I've used almost every type of tom muffling system out there including remo rings, moongels, and Evans mini e-mad. right now I have EC2's on my toms and I love the way they sound. I almost got onyx, but I wanted to try the EC2's. and yeah I'm tone deaf. that's why several orchestra's in the cleveland area call me to play timpani for them...maybe next time you could just accept some advice and take it how you want to without making a smart ass remark
You are going to have snare buzz regardless, but fortunately 99% of the time in the tones of you playing. listeners cant hear it only you can. 2nd your 12 is worse because its closer to the snare and last bit of advice.. Not sure how you put a hole in your bass head, but they make a beater pad that protects the head of you drum and makes it last twice as long, theyre about 4 bucks and just stick right where your beater hits your bass head..
You can't stop any snare rattle. You can lessen it. The snare drum is tuned to a note. If your toms are tuned close to that frequency, it will trigger the snares. Try tuning your snare drum to a "C" note. Your first tom to a G, your second tom to a D , and your floor tom to a lower D. Kik drum should be as loose as possible with some tension. Get a cheap guitar tuner or use a keyboard and play the notes. It makes all the difference.
If you want to get a good sound, go around the drum (you can do this on any drum) and check if all the skrues are tight enough, and if you want to tune your drums perfectly, you can try to by a drum dial, they are like 60 bucks, so its worth the sound, and if remo rings does not work for you try some moon gel (i know you said you was going to buy moon gel, i just recomend them) :)
Ok, dude, don't tune your snare ANY different then how you have it if you like it.
I have a friend's uncle taught me this badass trick.
First off, you'll need a business card. But what you do is slide the business card between your resonant head and the snares and to keep it from sliding out while you're playing bend the far side ends. That probably doesn't make any sense but I'll post a video on it asap, bra.
i hade the same issue... i just tuned my snare very tigh. it works though because i play deathcore, and tight, high snares are absolutly gergeous sounding in deathcore.
Reset your toms! If you like them that way then you can keep them that way, but they are five miles apart and are almost at a complete 90 degree angle! This is just advice, so you do not have to do this.
yeah, do that, and you get a Marching Snare crackle lol I wouldn't say crank it up ALL the way, just a little more...Sometimes, you can actually muffle the snare drum just a bit, and you won't get much buzz...also, you can cut some of the wires off equally. Or if that sounds bad to you, you can play with head phones on. When you put headphones on, you wont hear snare buzz, or overtones, sorta like mixing your drums lol
Hey man try a new head the bottom i find the resonant head makes the most difference try an evans hazy 300 and hey if it doesnt work it was only 15$ on musicians friend
losen the bottom head at tighten the shit out of the top head, also buying the thinnest reso head you can works perfect for toms or snares when trying to eliminate overtones.
The twelve inch tom does that to me too. I think it is in the right frequency range to vibrate the snare side head. try tightening or loosening the snare side head!
Moon gels help. The 12" tom picks up the most because its the closest and its the highest pitched. and tightening your snares will help but will not give the best sound
bro youve probably heard this from alot a people. But tighten the snare wires, that il help a little. Also puttin tape on the bottom of the snare head.
But if you want to get rid of snare buzz, Bob Gatzen says it is impossible, but you can reduce it by tightening the snare wires and muffling the resonant head (back Heads) on your snares and tuning it too!
i found a way to stop the buzz. Get a bit of tape and tape it to prings to the snare reso. U cant turn the snare off anymore, but it does stop the buzz, or at least it worked for me
I used to do that with a very old snare that used strings instead plastic straps on the snare wires. But if you tighten the snare to a medium tension, and you tape the snare wires at the middle, you get a jazz like tone. It sounds nice!
maybe you should try putting a resonant head on your tom -.- and moon jelll is SOOO much better then rings.

Got those same meinls...good cymbals especially considering the price.

That probably doesn't make any sense but I'll post a video on it asap, bra.

tighten the top head really tight
paintballstar368 2 years ago
tighten your snare alot and it will reduce it alot
licebuddies 2 years ago
@licebuddies I agree and the fact that the snare is right below the 12 inch tom will effect it
SuperPbizzle 2 years ago
i hade the same issue... i just tuned my snare very tigh. it works though because i play deathcore, and tight, high snares are absolutly gergeous sounding in deathcore.
licebuddies 2 years ago
Reset your toms! If you like them that way then you can keep them that way, but they are five miles apart and are almost at a complete 90 degree angle! This is just advice, so you do not have to do this.
CDB1997 2 years ago
bottom resonant heads will most likely make your toms sound better.
joelhanrahan21 2 years ago
My snare did that too:/
All I did to fix it was crank the hall out of the snare wires.
If you do that the buzz should be completely gone!
JoeyJunior17 2 years ago
yeah, do that, and you get a Marching Snare crackle lol I wouldn't say crank it up ALL the way, just a little more...Sometimes, you can actually muffle the snare drum just a bit, and you won't get much buzz...also, you can cut some of the wires off equally. Or if that sounds bad to you, you can play with head phones on. When you put headphones on, you wont hear snare buzz, or overtones, sorta like mixing your drums lol

i had that same kit for 2 years, yeah it is horrible, get a new one if you want it to sound better.

Hey man try a new head the bottom i find the resonant head makes the most difference try an evans hazy 300 and hey if it doesnt work it was only 15$ on musicians friend
AcDcDrummerJake1215 2 years ago
losen the bottom head at tighten the shit out of the top head, also buying the thinnest reso head you can works perfect for toms or snares when trying to eliminate overtones.

you are so ugly
airsoftguitardrum900 2 years ago
The twelve inch tom does that to me too. I think it is in the right frequency range to vibrate the snare side head. try tightening or loosening the snare side head!
dirtriderguy 2 years ago
Moon gels help. The 12" tom picks up the most because its the closest and its the highest pitched. and tightening your snares will help but will not give the best sound

you can put duct tape on the farthest parts of your snare and thats gets rid of a lot of buzz.
throfte290 2 years ago
But if you want to get rid of snare buzz, Bob Gatzen says it is impossible, but you can reduce it by tightening the snare wires and muffling the resonant head (back Heads) on your snares and tuning it too!
Rockinnsk8inallday 2 years ago
I actually fix it tighted the reso and batter. It sounds a lot better
KillMagnetic 2 years ago
you need to tighten the snare bead as tight as possible, and then you will lose that buzz
Lonnie555666 2 years ago 2
i found a way to stop the buzz. Get a bit of tape and tape it to prings to the snare reso. U cant turn the snare off anymore, but it does stop the buzz, or at least it worked for me
anarcy7777u 2 years ago
I used to do that with a very old snare that used strings instead plastic straps on the snare wires. But if you tighten the snare to a medium tension, and you tape the snare wires at the middle, you get a jazz like tone. It sounds nice!
