Eddie & The Hot Rods, The Pirates, Lew Lewis, Dr. Feelgood, Wilco Johnson, Count Bishops etc. Fast, Furious, Full of Energy and In Yer Face - Bring It On and Turn Up The Volume!!
I stumbled across a sight that might interst yall. showoffyourwheels dot com . Then motor X coverage they have is sensational. Should see the collection of rods there in their special events.
Everybody trys to steal all the thunder from Van and Them being the originators and best performers of Gloria. SOK especially since Gloria was the only song they ever had a success with.
I have said it before...the hit version is by the Shadows of Knight and there may be better versions and worse versions but the hit version everyone remembers is the SOK. 5 million sold. Jimy will sing it every day of his life and thanks Van everyday for giving him a 40 yr. career!
As far as Petty goes, his fans all pretend he wrote the song and his version is definitive. Actually, it's wimpy. This song is about a teenage boy and sex. Them's is the only one that has the right dynamics. Van was 19 when he sang & wrote this. Sorry Tom, Get a Life!!!!
I was agreeing that Eddie and the hot Rods wrecked their version. Actually I never said anything about Petty's version, As far as the "definitive" version I'd go with the Shadows of the Knight....
You said type in Petty-Gloria. Everyone has an opinion, and that's great.
Shadows of the Knight, never had a hit after Gloria. Them's version had the phrase, "She comes to my room" & a lot of radio stations wouldn't play it. So the Shadows cover without those words made it big in those areas.
I saw the FBI WARNING and ran right down to HQ and turned myself in.
Because I'm a BAD boy.
