There is smoke coming out of the exhaust too. I'm certain its an injector, I'll test the fuel pressure too tho. Thanks for the info! Hopefully tomm after the new injector is in I'll have no smoke and a smooth idle! :)
Oh sorry, I haven't changed the injector yet. Sorry for the confusion, I'm doing it tomm. Just wondering if it's a good idea to change the fuel pump? Does an injector just go bad on its own, or is it a symptom of another issue like a failing fuel pump or old fuel filter? When I changed the fuel filter 2 weeks ago, it was quite dirty. Now that I know, I will do that every 20,000km and change my oil every 7,000km. Thanks in advance!!
If your injector is causing a misfire that only occurs during the first cold start of the day, then I would recommend at least testing the fuel pressure. Low fuel pressure will cause a injector to loose lubrication and then fail.
So funny!! I had my #7 go on my truck a week ago. Question for you, its an '03 with 200,000km on it. I scanned the truck and it said ICP sensor and #7 cylinder. I changed the fuel filter and water separator, drove it for a week and it only read #7 cylinder. Do you think I need to change my fuel filter as well? Or is it possible that the injector just went bad by itself? The fuel filter was fairly dirty, but I haven't noticed a lack in power. Only a minor idle shudder and lots of exhaust smok
If your reading a return misfire, on the same cylinder, even after replacing the injector, you may have another concern like a sticking valve. A fuel filter concern would effect more than just one specific cylinder. Since it is on the same cylinder, it is possible that the injector did not get the correct torque to crush the copper washer. You could remove the injector and inspect for failed sealing washer.
srmastertech, why are the "new" injectors from Motorcraft remanufactured at 01:04? I priced injectors at my local ford dealer and they wanted $420 each. I assumed the price was for brand new injectors since I can buy reman ones for much cheaper elsewhere. I know reman are supposed to be just as good and to the same specs, but this kinda of surprised me. Your thoughts?
A reman injector is just as good as a new injector. I would call around to another dealer to verify your local area. If they are both high, buy on line, like from fordparts to search.
Thanks a ton for demystifying the injectors. You hear so much about these, it really helps me to see what they look like and how they go in. I might have a couple to replace in the next year or so. Thanks to your videos I will be doing them myself. Your efforts are greatly appreciated.
Thanks for leaving a comment and I am pleased my videos have helps in your abilities! Good luck with your repairs and if you need some assistance, just let me know!
Great videos and thanks! I recently put head studs/gaskets in my 6.0L and when I got it all back together I wound up with a longer than normal start (both hot and cold engine) and a horrible shake when the TC locks up. I'm thinking maybe an injector is bad or something along those lines and want to get the Auto Enginuity software to diagnose. Does it sound like I'm headed in the right direction?
I would say your concern could definitely be caused by a failed or weak injector. Self testing and live data for fuel control may help identify the misfiring cylinder. I would also recommend to test fuel pressure. Low dynamic fuel pressure can cause the injector failure.
Ah, OK, the 'ol screwdriver and rag technique is STILL popular these days!
I have to admit, I've never heard of transmission assembly gel, although it sounds great...where can I source some? I really appreciate your replies...this is going to be one of those fixes that really makes me feel like I've done something and my Livewire tune will once again be FUN!!
You should be able to find it just about any auto parts store. It comes in the small tub and can be blue, green or red in color. Your welcome for the replies! I might have been able to answer you quicker on my Facebook page, lol. I help people everyday and I enjoy it! I like the SCT Livewire, a great product and reliable tunes!
I do not use any carb cleaner or brake cleaner to clean the cups. After brushing, blow out with compressed air and I just use a red shop rag that is lint free. I use a screwdriver pushing the rag into the cup and turn. remove rag and your ready to go. I use transmission assembly gel to lube on the o-rings and just about everything else, It melts quick and burns completely if it gets in the cylinder or fuel.
To replace an injector, your looking at a starting point around $800 for just 1 injector installed. Each injector runs around $325 each. I would want to completely diagnose this vehicle before you buy it. They may say it is an injector, but what if is a weak cylinder, that could be the cost of an entire engine. Powerstrokes don't loose their value, even with 200K miles on it so selling it cheap tells me a lot about its real condition.
Working in a dealership, I don't get to do many delete kits. All my videos are from current repairs on my customers vehicles. The next delete I do, I will definately record it. In the meantime, the procedure to r&r the intake is the same. All you have to do is install the plug on the exhaust inlet pipe, install the pipe for coolant flow back into the intake, and pop a freeze plug into the intake for exhaust inlet.
