Wow I love this! When I was about 15 years old I attended a ceremony in Compton, Los Angeles, and it was beautiful because we were in the middle of the hustle bustle of the city yet we could feel the spirituality. Now in a mall? Even better, it let's ppl understand other ppls culture, and let's ppl know that the culture is still alive and vibrant!
Peyotl is not eaten, but merely chewed. Its psychoactive juices are absorbed by the mouth's membranes. If eaten, it won't affect the brain's chemistry in any significant way.

I grew up in the Native American Church and we always eat the sacrement either fresh or dried.NO ONE would chew the plant and not swallow the plant material.The Kickapoo and Ute (along with many natives now) drink a very thick, almost glue consistency peyote.It can be made from peyote too old or smashed to eat.We also drink it in tea like form.It is always ingested.Are you saying you chew and spit out the chewed plant? I think you have read too much DonQuihote

I based my original comment on first hand knowledge aquired in Mexico, in Real de Catorce, where the Huichol pilgrims go to harvest the Peyote. They walk back to the coast chewing the Peyote and spitting the pulp after a while. I wasn't talking about the SW US natives, I apologize for not being more clear.
@saultie Thanks for kind reply.I understand that there are many ways that natural sacrements are taken. In fact, as you probably know, in S.America both peyote and mushrooms are ingested by some by drinking the urine of the leader who has eaten the sacrement.In the 60s, U.S. hippy types often ruined peyote in transport and boiled the rotted buttons and took it by enema.I mention this to show that the body takes in the active parts all through the trip, from chewing to pooping.Never spit out!!!
They are in Puerta Vallarta, Mexico and they are eating the plant. This tribe actually lived in the mountains but came into the city for a week of events to educate the public on their culture.
