Eddie Vedder, Chris Cornell, Roger Daltry, they come close (very close), but I think Layne had the most powerful and well articulated voice in the history of rock so far. A very good band indeed!!!
Fuck all you who fight to see who sings better !!
My favorite band is NIRVANA and i don't say "Kurt sings better, Kurt sings better", just shut up and enjoy the song, if you keep fighting each other do me a favor.... FUCK YOU !!
Was Layne missing some teeth? I'm not trying to be a dick I'm honestly wondering. It just seems like how he pronounces some things it sounds like maybe he was missing teeth.
@ideasarebulletpr00f I sounds that way to me too. Like when someone talks without their false teeth in. His face is sunken in around his mouth too. He was pretty much on his death bed at this point though :(
@Wildsyde1 He lived for 6 more years after this was recorded.......he wasn't on his death bed, his drugs just fucked everything up with the band for a long time.
can we leave layne staley's addiction out of the comments? there's nothing worse than a piss ant who thinks he's a scientist claiming that "oh man, layne was so fucked up on heroin while performing this". how do you know? did you take samples of his blood before and after the unplugged performance? layne is dead, there's nothing anyone can do about it. so how about we just enjoy his legacy instead of trying to pinpoint if and when he used.
@07foxmulder uhh... you suck, and yeah he was high as fuck. you obviously have never dabbled in the opes. you don't need to be a scientist, its in all his expressions. why do you think he walked out in shades. i think it makes this performance and his "legacy" even better, but whatever
@RedRiverSeed shame on me for never dabbling in the "opes". with your logic i should assume that everyone walking around wearing sunglasses is on heroin? lol okay, buddy. but yeah, thank god layne staley was addicted to heroin or else his legacy, according to you, wouldn't be as good; again, what great logic. i guess we should thank god that buddy holly got on that plane, john lennon met chapman, and hendrix took those sleeping pills, too, right? "you sucK", very clever.
@07foxmulder none of that is what i said ace but perceive how you want i guess. what i was saying though is that he was high, fact. its much harder to perform like that, fact. hows that for logic. oh and like half of their songs are about heroine. and yeah thank god all those people did drugs fag or their music would be different, more facts for you. and the "clever" shit not what i was going for, i genuinely thought your comment sucked BUDDY
@MyJarOfFlies his addiction is what made his music great buddy half his music was bout dope layne was a great man with a bad habit but imo if it wasnt for dope he wouldn have made half of the songs that we love and with that emotion behind it
@polevaulters22 of course he was heroin is very hard to kick and he just loved the dirt he said it all in his lyrics like in the song dirt he sang you have the talent to make me feel like dirt and also that he was trying to stay away from the shit like in the same song different part he sang i try to keep myself away from what is wrong for me but the amount of shit he was doing is nearly impossible for anybody to kick you get very sick you cant sleep or eat or even take a shit
Layne was already half-gone, Jerry had food poisoning and was probably hooked on drugs, and they hadn't played together live in almost 3 years. But this show is just fucking awesome. Who knows how great AIC could have been if they had truly reached their full potential?
@TRChuckNorris Probably. It seemed like he had to do that for a good portion of the show. He definitely has a foot in the grave during this show, the fact he sang as well is he did under his circumstances is astounding.
@jedsebastian I can think of 25 drummers off the top of my head that are better than Lars Ulrich. And I'm talking living drummers. 50 if we're talking dead and alive.
I would give up everything I own and have ever owned just to have been there to see this show....simply AMAZING. Those that went, very lucky....RIP LAYNE!
@grannybenson Im not racists man. Just stating the facts. I feel that you would get equally offended had i said "Black people". So why not just go all out? Shit its the truth. And exactly, the majority are black. They go about teaching guys how to disrespect women, and women to be sluts. Jus sayin.
@grannybenson Thats funny lol. Im sure they can though. The artists themselves have started up some record companies i would say. I have no proof but i would say that would be a wise investment.
@notabotta Thats a stupid ass comment, do you know where thier influence came from? Blues which is black music and look at Hendrix he was an awesome guitarist
@SoundZeppelin1 Never been a big Hendrix fan, Although he was insane at what he did. If you find the other comments on my comment, you will see that I meant no harm by it. Still, that is what happened, Rap music and such has fucked up music in itself. Thats just my opinion, if you dont agree then fine, If you do, then thats fine as well.
It's alright There comes a time Got no patience To search for peace of mind Laying' low Want to take it slow No more hiding Or disguising truths I've sold It's okay Had a bad day Hands are bruised from Breaking rocks all day Drained and blue I bleed for you You think it's funny Well you're drowning in it too Yeah, it's fine We'll walk down the line Leave our rain A cold trade for warm sunshine You're my friend I will defend And if we change Well I love you anyway
@dubs5121 I'm a child of the 80s and I think AIC and other music from the 90s is 100X better than the shit they had when I was in high school. Amen to your comment.
the first time i heard this song i mistakenly thought it was a Simply Red song just from the bass and drums,i literally laughed my ass off to find that it was alice in chains and i truly got hooked to this tune!
love their music more than anything inspires just about any artist to go for it.......miss you sooo much layne.......love you jerry and the other dudes wish i had these dudes hair jeez......
Let's not get mixed up in the bullshit of who is the better drummer. Kinney rocks, and is also a big inspiration of mine as well, however so is Danny. Out of respect, I will not divulge who is the better drummer. I love them both, and they both rock.
Defiantly there just is no denying how amazing tool is, and Danny. I love AIC though because these bands all have there own sound and I love it uniqueness like I'm sure everyone does.
People can say what they want ...but AIC was quadrupple platnum because of one thing,no not the song writer,it was good but dozens of others from seattle alone were just as good but went no where.I you know the history of AIC you know alot of music producers (labels)liked...excuse me were insanly crazy about Lane's voice. With out him...I doubt they would have made it out of seattle and trust me,Jerry knows it.
@stevekon11 Give credit to the band as a whole. Your mistake and saying that only one person made the band to fame. No it took the whole group to create the whole thing you know? One person can't do it on thier own, every band member brought thier own dish to the table to serve and people liked what they served and ate it :) RIP LAYNE you are missed!!!! im 19 and jam the good stuff screw crap music :) js hehe as much as i dont like the new AIC..the new singer is ok..can never replace Layne..<3
I just had a good cry. The last two days I've watched this video. I never realized how much I miss Layne. I'm almost 49 so I don't like much from the 90's on. This band is real and Layne sure was. He was an original. All the greats die young. We all have problems. Some of us make it and some don't. Heroin sucks. Leave it along. With the Kindbud out there now; just chill. Layne you're missed by your fans and loved ones. I'm sorry you couldn't get the help you needed to make it through. RIP Layne
@txlastrebel , hello , i could not of chosen beter words than you , very well said !! just like you have said he was truly original , a 1 off , take it easy !!! be cool
@txlastrebel In no way, shape or form, can an impact like that of Layne Staley be measured, and whether or not we can see the value of that special perspective in the moment, in time it won't matter, cause all the future generations will know consciously is the fn amazing soul and heart that went into crafting music of this caliber and passion. But, we today are left w/ a massive hole where a giant once stood, and I hope he can feel from his place now, the love that eluded him on Earth. AIC!
@Msdistarr I just miss that in so many. It can't be said enough. I hope he gets an nth of what he and AIC gave to me. I miss them, but we are the lucky ones. Thanks, Msdistarr, for corroborating my tears.
@txlastrebel I'm right with you on that one... His voice was so unique, and full of emotion. I think if he was still alive, he woul've gone on to write many more songs that would've amazed us... If I was a tenth of the rock singer he was...I'd be more than happy, unique.... well cool.. and with an 'edge'... thats Layney......rip dude.......
@kernowrock555 The rock star life and being famous isnt all its cracked up to be. Yes your a millionaire and could have anything you want, but you will feel more alone than you had ever in your whole life. Everybody is always putting out lies or bashing you around for stuff you do, their tearing you apart because they stop thinking about you as a person who has feelings. Layne even said so himself, they said all the things about his addiction and kept deaming him, not caring about his feelings
i hate to say it but wtf, does it take heroin to make good music? bring on the heroin. the music today blows in comparison to the shit from the early 2000's and previous. heroin - good music - clean yourslef up so you dont die and then just do some concerts. would give 200 bucks a ticket or more to see alot of the bands i grew up with that have died from drugs.atleast tool and NiN are still kicking i guess.
@lanyestaley1 alice in chains isnt around anymore their band died in 2002 and then the final nail in the cofin was in 2011 jerry cantrell and sean kinney still play but i cannot put the same name on their band as this one in the video it just cant fit
@dudewheresmycar206 Well 3/4's of the band in this video are still rocking. Plus their new music is good. Alice in chains wasn't just Layne. Jerry wrote must the music.
I'm addicted to the alice in chains videos, and their music, but it also hurts me at the same time, cause I realize our loss... Layne Staley was the man!
I don't listen to this Genre of music but for some reason I like this group. I kind of wish that I could go back in time and actually be in the crowd when they played all these great songs live and unplugged.
And now Mike Starr is gone too, same affliction. I wish I could use these deaths as a means to 'learn' to get rid of my lingering deadly addictions, but that just isnt the nature of it. What a waste. I hope I dont end up in the graveyard as early as these two. I agree about the vocals. if i wasnt watching i would have thought this was studio edited and remastered, not live. wow
Now that I'm listening to this again, I guess it turns out that this song really is more than I interperted it to be (about troubled young boys living through life). According to SongMeanings, Jerry wrote this at the time he and Layne's relationship was going rocky-- Not only is it about Layne's drug addiction & his withdrawal from the band, but also about how their friendship will always be something special between them. ;-; "And if we change, well, I love you anyway..."
months ago i had the privilege of sitting down and getting to know laynes best friend the original bass player for alice n' chains Mike Starr. i watched tears role from his eyes as he told me details about the day he found layne dead. his own cats were eating his body. 3 weeks after meeting mike i was there for his final days on earth. i hoped he'd snap out of his addiction and carry. mike said that layne was clueless about how talented he was. one of a kind. RIP Casey Bryson
A song that stands the test of time.

AIC!

@losingwins So very well said my friend.

@Msdistarr I just miss that in so many. It can't be said enough. I hope he gets an nth of what he and AIC gave to me. I miss them, but we are the lucky ones. Thanks, Msdistarr, for corroborating my tears.

@losingwins Tears should never have to be validated. Your welcome.

@broveyUT AIC is still rocking. They are making a new album before the end of this year.

@lanyestaley1 alice in chains isnt around anymore their band died in 2002 and then the final nail in the cofin was in 2011 jerry cantrell and sean kinney still play but i cannot put the same name on their band as this one in the video it just cant fit
dudewheresmycar206 4 months ago
@dudewheresmycar206 Well 3/4's of the band in this video are still rocking. Plus their new music is good. Alice in chains wasn't just Layne. Jerry wrote must the music.
lanyestaley1 4 months ago 2
@lanyestaley1 im not saying that he didnt however the band cant be the same without its original members

I'm addicted to the alice in chains videos, and their music, but it also hurts me at the same time, cause I realize our loss... Layne Staley was the man!
WertzuHun 5 months ago
This band was unique. Layne's voice was unique.
I don't listen to this Genre of music but for some reason I like this group. I kind of wish that I could go back in time and actually be in the crowd when they played all these great songs live and unplugged.

@francotico1 Now where did you hear that, Metallica behind the music says it all. If what I said is not true then Metallica are liars.

@newbslice I watched it and they didn't mention Alice in Chains once. They talked about their history basicly
