I have just read the book Water for Elephants, written by Sara Gruen and i am truly shocked and disgusted by this. In the 21st Century you'd have thought that such acts would have come to a stand still but apparently not. I just bloody hope that one of those elephants turns on the trainer and gives him a deserved beating back. Elephants are meant for the wild; not for our amusement but worst of all; Elephants never forget.

I work with the elephants at my local zoo, and I just have to say - this is ridiculous. Animals respond more to positive reinforcement, not abuse. Elephant hide is very thick, and as stated by the San Diego Zoo, "An elephant's skin can be up to one inch (2.54 centimeters) thick on some parts of its body. Even though it's thick, an elephant's skin is also very sensitive." They can even feel a fly landing on them, due to their sensitive nerve endings! These animals do not belong in a circus.

There is a great book called "water for elephants" which actually is the reason i was looking up elephants at all- if you read it, it will defiantly give you a good idea of the people that use things like- bull hooks. Trust me, i am definitly not the "animals rights kinda of person".but this is just bad taste, looks to me like a bunch of guys with tiny dicks that take advantage of beating something.

I really don't think these animals are abused. I know what we see looks painful but look at their skin/fur. It's thick and tough. I am sure they aren't feeling it half as bad as what we think. The trainers need to do that in order to keep those animals in line. Those animals are well taken care of. I just went to their show last night. I could see the animals having fun. The tigers coats were shinny. They were well fed. They animals weren't underweight nor crying out in pain when being hit.

Taking them to court would be challenging and near impossible. However We DO have power to stop this. The historically proven most effective strategy is simply to boycott. To be a more effective boycotter spread the word. Specifically if you know someone planning on attending this circus (or any circus featuring animals for that matter.) let them know what happens, you might change their mind. If you really want to go the extra mile. Protest outside the circus when it comes to your city.

This footage is not real. Back in the 70s all circuses were forced to adopt ethical conduct or else go out of business, and the circuses that refused no longer exist. Ringling Bros. has vastly improved!

They remember everything, and are not only just trying to protect themselves but their friends. An elephant is probably more in emotional pain than physical pain. This is breaking my heart.
