asoka - you are making a comment mistake, confusing muscle size and body fat levels. These women do not have large muscles, they do have Extremely low unsustainable body fat levels at contest time. Fitness comps were created for women to compete without having to take roids. Roids create a certain look that doesn't score well in Fitness comp, the majority of these women are not on roids. The fitness look is a very desirable marketable look, just look at how many magazine covers its on.

The women shown here probably compete in the "figure" category, thus most of them aren't particularly muscular indeed, but some are very close to looking like female bodybuilders of the 1970's to early 1980's. And since the 1990's many female athletes in other disciplines like track and field could have won pro bodybuilding contests 10 years earlier.

These are figure and fitness competitors, not bodybuilders. Therefore, there is no need to take steroids. It's perfectly possible to become lean and muscular, purely from a strict diet and exercise regime. Some female bodybuilders take steroids to increase their muscle mass drastically, to gain the size, they wouldn't normally be able to as women.

Yeah, they actually look pretty bad often at competition because of the boniness that many of the women start to show when they get this lean. Some even get that rippling around their implants, they get so ripped. Just a little extra body fat makes them look unbelievable, though.
