What I get from this song is that the "rich girl" is trying to have her cake and eat it too; the "poor boy" has no illlusions about that and is rather bitter and sarcastic over the whole thing. Goffen and King had a way of taking musical cliches and turning them on their head, didn't they?
Another great song from Carole King & Gerry Goffin for Steve. It was not the follow-up to "Go Away Little Girl". That was "Don't be Afraid Little Darlin'".
"Poor Little Rich Girl" reached #27 on the Billboard charts. Goffin & King also wrote "Walkin' Proud" (#26) and, of course, "Go Away Little Girl" the only #1 hit for Steve. He's second biggest hit (#5) came in 1957 with a cover version of the Buddy Knox #1 hit of "Party Doll". Steve also had three other top 10 hits from 1959 - 1961.
Funny how this wasn't a hit, obviously they were going with a similar double voiced sound that had worked in the previously released "Go Away little Girl" ~ sometimes follow up songs work, sometimes they don't - I don't know if this one even charted - but he's certainly a great singer regardless.
God, that 45 brings back great memories. I remember running out to buy it as soon as I heard it on the radio. I already had "Go Away Little Girl" and "Don't Be Afraid Little Darling".
I Still play this..and many listeners will ask.."Is This New"???...or better yet..."Who Is Steve Lawrence???....THAT'S TRULY SAD!! He and Eydie HAD their hits back in the 60's...BIG TIME!! VERY GREAT VOACL ARTIST!!
One of my favorite songs of all times. Its the most! I grew up listening to Steve Lawerence, sing Poor Little Rich Girl. I grew up poor, but yet dated a girl from another town who's family was better off than mine at the time. So i guess you could say she was The Poor Little Rich Girl. We broke up in 1966 and i joined the Army and went off to Viet Nam.
The 60's generation and the music that was part of it...... well!! there will never be another generation like it ever!
@68nam like most of us guys who grew up listening to these great sounds we shared the best of times and probably the worst of times. Like u I had a poor little rich girl who decided to wait for me and we were married 3 months after I got back from nam. Am still married to her today some some 41 years later. Even tho we had nam it was still the BEST years to grow up in. p.s. the money went to brothers but I got the real prize :-)
This certainly IS a lost oldie! I literally haven't heard this record since my early adolescence which was the period of time of this record's release. The instrumental and vocal backing is beautiful and is reminiscent of an early Johnny Mathis recording. Too bad that the woman doing the beautiful backing vocal along with the strings remains anonymous. There's even someone whistling briefly in the middle part. A great Goffin and King song as all of them are. Thank you for posting this.
Another great song by one of the best singers of all time...and most underestimated...he made it look so easy...the song was written to Carol King and here then husband, Gerry Goffin..The first Carol King songe he recorded, was "Go Away Little Girl
l...it was his biggest hit and Carol's first #1 hit.
Dont be afraid little darlin is another bobby vee sounding 45 by steve lawrence that has his picture on the label[there are tony benett 45s with his picture on the label ]
Steve Lawrence is one of the best voices of all time and I can't speak for him but I bet he's glad Gerry Goffin and Carole King were in The Brill Building when he was. This great song writing team wrote a lot of his big hits, "Go Away Little Girl" was one of them.
thanks for this, it was one of my late mothers favourites.

It was a hit, but a small one. It was very old fashioned for 1963, and would have been a much bigger hit a couple of years before, but I love it.

Steve Lawrence was singing before Bobby Vee ( another grat singer for this genre )
The diffrence is Steve can sing anything & has one the best male voices of his time.
Very well known & did a lot of concerts , very succesful, but truly underated.
He still kicks ASS !!
Peace
