I've watched this quite a few times, and I honestly feel that I can come up with that sound, or something close to it with my epiphone loaded with PG pups and my JCM 2000 tweaked just slightly. Albeit anyone can argue anything anytime and forever considering our experiences... but my ears tell me I've done similar sounds to that. Not knocking it, I like it. But I think I stumbled into it, instead of searched for it.
@pollywoggle24 - fair enough. Each to their own and all that! A lot of it for me is about the feel and interaction between guitar and amp, which doesn't come across on a quick and dirty YouTube video...
Nice man. I just finished building one of these. I just have it modded like the one hendrix used at Monterey. Little more mids and gain. These amps are sweet.
People who have never played these things really don't understand just how clean you have to play on them. They are very picky amps, and any mistake that would not be heard on another amp is magnified on these. But, with good technique, their tone is very rewarding. However much worse it makes bad playing sound, that's how much BETTER it makes good playing sound. In short, that means this guy right here is good. Also, when you really crank them, they have a power tube grind like no other.
@stretch90 - it's not cranked very much. TV volume to me is the volume a TV needs to be to be heard over a small family talking. The amp has a PPIMV, and a vintage Marshall circuit generates a fair amount of gain in the phase inverter...
can you tell me which input you used and if you jumpered the cables? I'm getting the 100jh pretty soon and I'm wondering how I can get some gain at lower volumes. Thanks
@stretch90 - mine isn't a Marshall JH, but I used the top left input only without any channel jumpering. You won't get much gain at low volumes with the JH without a mod to fit a master volume, an attenuator or a gain pedal...
@stretch90 If you haven't tried them yet, get a good power attenuator (not a cheap one). Marshall powerbrake, THD Hotplate, or something like that. I use the THD Hotplate, and you can crank those powertubes without pissing off your neighbors. Make sure you get the correct impedance for your amp. I hope that helps.
Just toooooooooooooooo sweet!! I want to put pearly gate pups in my Traditional. I would like to hope to get in the ball park of that tone!! rock on..................
@graymo3 - the comment bubbles tell you when I switch. It's bridge to start, then to neck around 2:35 and back to bridge for the last part around 4:20...
@twinfan73 wow! thankx again, what kind of MV do you have? on my Marshall I once installed both famous PPI ones but then Presence was useless so I removed MVs and switched to hotplate, BTW great amp wish I could buy one
It's got a PPIMV fitted, I *think* it's the "LARMAR" version. It does make the presence less effective at low volumes, but it's allowing extra gain from the PI to come through, so I compensate with treble settings and live with it being a bit brighter at home. At gig volumes it's less of a problem...
dude. thats it right there. fucking sweet. from the low to the high e and all points in between. fucking sweet. i got a les paul traditional and a bluesbreaker ri getting modded right now. also waiting for my rangemaster treble boost in the mail. think i might get one of those tube tape delays but jesus its an awfully expensive effect. anyway your gear sounds priceless.

yeah i know this is a 45/100 but I thought its pretty similar to the 100jh. So are you saying that this amp has more gain?
stretch90 1 year ago
@stretch90 - I'm saying because of the master volume it will have more gain at lower volumes...

great! thanx x sharing... may I ask amp settings ??
dirtyTony666 1 year ago
@dirtyTony666
I didn't note them down, but it'll be something like:
Presence 2 (Master volume affects presence, hence the low value)
Bass 0
Middle 10
Treble 4
Gain / Channel volume 7
Master set to loud-ish TV level
Guitar volumes were used a lot to clean the tone up :0)

Are you running an OD pedal? That's an awful lot of gain for a JTM45.
murfdog19 1 year ago
@murfdog19 - Nope, straight into the 45/100 with a Master Volume. That's all pre-amp gain. JTMs can get dirty...
