@TheLingaling Milkshape can do texture mapping. But there is a more advanced program for texturing call Ultimate Unwrap 3D that can do a little better job once you're experienced with it.
Thanks for the tutorial. I couldn't understand to do it right. Thanks! :D Have a question tho. Is it possible to like uh... explode the UV map so it would like piece by piece?
s there any way to select vetexes from the 3d window? since in complicated shapes it wil be extremely difficault to choose the one you want from the 2d views...
@Mist3RC0ndom No I don't play those games. But the answer is yes, you can make a model for Counter Strike using Milkshape. There is a text tutorial on the web called CSGirl for CounterStrike Girl that I used once years ago to learn how connect the dots in Milkshape.
hey, I downloaded a model from a game that I'm trying to mod, but somehow it looks very shiny insted of smooth. how do i set it to have the same behavior as the things created directly with this?
@JONIMASAKIS The engine you are using will determine how additional textures are applied. You can adjust this somewhat in the materials window, with specular and ambient adjustments. However some engines support real specular maps, normal maps, bump maps, and paralax maps, which are each specialized types of image files that are loaded into the game engine and scripted into the code.
Though I have one question if you don't mind though, how do you fix the alpha channel to the right? It is slightly moved to the left, which causes the texture to be semi-transparent when viewed in game and the slider doesn't stay put at the right most end. Help please?
@Bleedingcowz I'm not exactly sure what you are talking about.... If I understand correctly, you can set the alpha transparency in the 3D view from 0.0 to 1.0 but I have never seen that the Milkshape view effects the output in the game. Might try changing that number though and see if it helps. Otherwise you'll need to fix the texture opacity in Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro.
I mean in the "Materials" tab there are two sliders right? One affixed to the rightmost and the other to the leftmost. I'm talking about the one under
Diffuse and Emissive. The slider is slightly moved to the left, and it can't be put to its maximum to the right. I was wondering if you experienced this aswell, because I too can't seem to fix it.
@Bleedingcowz Oh I know what you are talking about now. yes that can have some effect on the export if the information is saved in the texture. You can change the emissive and diffuse and other effects by changing the color from light to dark, and moving the slider bar to more solid. Experiment with it to see what it looks like and find something that looks good to you.
@Bleedingcowz No I can't say that I've had it slide on it's own before. Sorry. Maybe it is locked somehow. I haven't experienced that so I don't know.
Your voice is not ambigous, it's fine. I think someone needs to clean out thier ears. :)
I just like to thank you. I have wanted to learn 3d modelling for a while but never did. My ex wants to learn to mod for sims and I want to help so that provided the last motivation I needed so I picked up milkshape and we are currently running through your tutorials.
Very well done, You are clear and concise and communicating all relevant info. I seem to be picking up pretty quickly thanks to you.
You're welcome. I will try to remember to record some more as I figure out new concepts myself. Fighting with the animation of a tuna fish right now, myself. I get it all rigged, and test it and it works, and then 3 animation frames in it loses the rigging on the mouth. I have no idea why. But it's done it twice. VERY frustrating. So once I get that figured out I will share the mystery. If anyone already KNOWS the answer, please tell me!
I figured out the rigging problem. Had to totally re-rig the skeleton so it would remember to stay rigged to the center. I'll be making some new videos soon, but since they are longer they will have to be off YouTube. Getting into more detailed videos now. Harder to keep the kids quiet for the longer videos too. LOL 10 minutes is about their limit. And it takes more like half an hour to do a more detailed model. I leave in the mistakes and corrections too so people can see how to fix them.
I'm glad you like my videos. Unfortunately the demands of game development keep me pretty busy. I have to concentrate the bulk of my attention on my team at Heaven's Blessings Tiny Zoo. We accept a limited number of apprentices if you would like to apply for a position on our team, but be prepared to work hard! Making games is not all fun and games. hehehe
well ya know, i'd work hard if i was to do anything, but i just want to learn modeling for the Source Engine, and i own a server in Garrys Mod 10, so i would like to have a few custom models on the server, ya know if you'd like to help i'd love it. thanks.
if i try to add the texture, i get that strange thing, but i dont undertsnad how to get it right with the texture coordinent manager
bcus i made a gun but it only paints the cilinders ( like the scope and the barrel, while i already selected all of them, and in groups it shows that all groups are painted with the texture, i dont gewt it how to do it.. )
Suds and Modwebby, both of these questions are more complicated than i can answer in 500 characters, and will take longer than a 10 minute YouTube video to explain. I am considering offering some paid tutorials that are more indepth. I will definitely consider putting these texturing requests at the top of my list.
You get the first 30 days for free, FULLY functional, including saves and exports. After 30 days you won't be able to save or export your models. So you want to register it before the trial period expires. The license fee is nominal, and very much worth it.
For Torque they must be in either .JPG or .PNG (if you want to use alpha transparency they must be in .PNG format). But Milkshape can use more texture formats than that so if you're using another game engine that required .BMP or .TGA for example, you can use those too.
Textures are images that you provide. They will be located wherever you store your images on your hard drive. Milkshape does not provide any default textures for you to experiment with. It accepts textures in .jpg .png .tga and .bmp format. You should check with the application you're going to be using the model in however, as some will not accept all formats. Torque for example only accepts images in .jpg and .png format in a resolution at a power of 2. Good luck!
Without knowing what format you are exporting it to, it will be difficult to help troubleshoot that problem. The texture needs to be in the same folder with the model (or in the case of Torque, in the same folder OR in a direct-line folder above it as far up as the Data folder, but non in a paralell or lower folder). Depending on the program you're using you might need to write a materials script for the texture too. Hope that helps.
.b3d format is what realm crafter uses, it is blitz 3d format. But I also believe that realm crafter will use .X format and convert over to b3d format for you. Just remember to keep your original saved as milkshape3d format so you can make changes and refine your model as needed.

well, were the hell do you find the texture folder? you have to atleast mention that. when mine first comes up, it isnt in the same folder as you it's in the my computer folder.
Your texture folder is any place that you store your image files that you want to use for a texture. Certainly where I put my files is likely to be in a different place than where you put your files. There is no way I can know where you've saved your texture images to. Sorry for the confusion.
If you go to the Milkshape3D website they have a lot of advanced tutorials available there for the more advanced concepts. I started developing these tutorials to help people who were having trouble getting started. Once you get the basics it's much easier to understand the more advanced concepts than trying to jump into the middle. Hope this helps.
You have to be sure that you have the faces selected in the group window, and then you can go into the Texture Coordinate editor (under the Window tab) and arrange it how you want it to display. Hope that helps. Not a lot of space in this message box to explain.
Yes Blender is a good free program, but a lot of people find the GUI for Blender a bit awkward or confusing. Milkshape is more intutive for people who don't think like an engineer. Milkshape is much more an artists tool, very visual, like playing with clay or triangualr blocks. Each has their strengths and weaknesses. I happen to like Milkshape better, though I do have both. Others may like blender better. It's really a personal preference.
im no at creating stuff even the stuff you found basic i cant even get close to how do i create stuff like guns so good??? Hey erm is it possible that you could help me create a harry potter wands ? :D
Sorry, I have to spend all my development time working on developing the games we have in production. I don't have time to make 3D art for other projects. But to make a magic wand you would only need to use the Cylinder tool and a little modification. Gun is a bit more complicated. Have fun!
Hey thank you for helping me but how do i get my own custom textures to work because it ses unable to load texture.where do you get your textures and what files do you have to save it as so it works? Thanks Ash
You have to browse to the folder where you have the texture file saved. They need to be in .JPG or .PNG format to work in most games. Milkshape also supports .BMP format.
You need to create or find a texture. If you are texturing a model that you created yourself you will need to find a texture on your hard drive. If you are working with a model someone else created you will need to find where the textures are in the pack. Textures are image files, like .JPG, .PNG, .GIF, and .BMP
You copy both the 3d model (in a format appropriate to your game engine) and the texture image into the proper directory for your game. Without knowing what game engine you are using, I can't help you much more than that. I use Torque for my game, so our models have to be in DTS format (for the type of models that Milkshape makes).
The material is the 2D image that you use to texture the 3D model. A material or texture can be created in a program like Photoshop, Paintshop Pro, or Gimp. Then you load the texture using the materials tab in Milkshape, and apply the texture to the image using the texture coordinate editor. Hope this helps.
To use a tansparent texture, you need to use a program like Adobe Photoshop, JASC Paintshop Pro (vs 9 or earlier), Gimp or the like. Then edit the areas that you want to be transparent using that software programs tools. Then save as .PNG format with alpha channels. For PS you need to use the SuperPNG plugin. Then load your texture into Milkshape, right click the 3D view and select your transparency level. It defaults to 1. I usually want 0. Good luck!
I was on vacation. Sorry for the delay in responses. :) The texture files can be .JPG or .PNG for use in games, milkshape also supports .BMP textures (but TGEA does not).
I am currently using Milkshape 1.8.1b which has some important bug fixes. If you are using an older version, I highly reccomend the upgrade!
I haven't ever used MilkShape to create 2D sprites, but I suppose it is possible. Torque Game Builder has some build in sprites and drag & drop game creation tools. I don't know anything about Blitz other than I've heard of it before though. Sorry.
I was wondering if this would be good tool for creating a 2d fighting game i just bought a program called BLitz programming and i have the basics covered but i have no clue how to created any charcters/sprites or anything graphical in that matter so if you can give me tips. would be gratefully appreciated.
Hey jus wanted to let you know these videos are really helpful and before i saw them i just would click buttons on Milkshape and nothen would happen so thank you. and blessing to you to.
I won't be making any more new videos until after CGDC which ends on the 21st. so be looking for new videos the week following that conference! :) Until then, it's crunch time on game dev getting ready for the conference. Thanks for understanding!
I know how to get them into Torque Game Engine and Torque game Engine Advanced, but not how to get them into other game formats as I have not worked with other game engines. Eventually I hope to be covering the exporting process though. Have these tutorials been helpful to you at all? Please let me know if there is anything else you would like to see covered in this series! Thanks for your feedback!

You have to texture the sides seperately.
For making houses, I would recommend a program like Constructor instead, unless you specifically need it to be in a Milkshape-compliant format.

Hey thank you for helping me but how do i get my own custom textures to work because it ses unable to load texture.where do you get your textures and what files do you have to save it as so it works? Thanks Ash
Ashrachvai 4 years ago
You have to browse to the folder where you have the texture file saved. They need to be in .JPG or .PNG format to work in most games. Milkshape also supports .BMP format.
Hope that helps,

it always says error downloading texture. How do i get a texture?
duuuur1 4 years ago
You need to create or find a texture. If you are texturing a model that you created yourself you will need to find a texture on your hard drive. If you are working with a model someone else created you will need to find where the textures are in the pack. Textures are image files, like .JPG, .PNG, .GIF, and .BMP
Hope this helps. Merry Christmas!

how do i get it into game
gmodking 4 years ago
You copy both the 3d model (in a format appropriate to your game engine) and the texture image into the proper directory for your game. Without knowing what game engine you are using, I can't help you much more than that. I use Torque for my game, so our models have to be in DTS format (for the type of models that Milkshape makes).

i ahve no matrials file

The material is the 2D image that you use to texture the 3D model. A material or texture can be created in a program like Photoshop, Paintshop Pro, or Gimp. Then you load the texture using the materials tab in Milkshape, and apply the texture to the image using the texture coordinate editor. Hope this helps.

How do you get a transparent texture?
jervan123 4 years ago

Thanks for watching!
Blessings to you,

Hi, I was wondering, what version of milkshape is this?
I think I have an old version because it doesn't have the shape options in the UV mapper, thanks.
Nice tutorials by the way, though I probably would have done things a bit differently, these are the basics no matter how you present them. :)

I haven't ever used MilkShape to create 2D sprites, but I suppose it is possible. Torque Game Builder has some build in sprites and drag & drop game creation tools. I don't know anything about Blitz other than I've heard of it before though. Sorry.
Blessings to you!
