  • The old Silverchair is beautifully dark and angry, wallowing in the rainy ether.

Young Modern is like discovering light for the first time and a newfound existence.

    It's a wonderful balance.

This is some of their best stuff ever. I don't think there's anything like it, I have nothing to compare it to.

Maybe it also helped that when this came out, my life had transitioned from a life of limited options to a life of freedom and opportunity. Took a couple of listens to understand.

  • HOW GOOD IS THE NOTE HE SINGS ON "GOAL"?!?!

  • to anyone saying this is shit, are you just not listening to the mindblowingly awesome chorus of this song? their "early music" was made when they were young teens, borrowing greatly from popular styles of the time i.e. grunge rock (primarily nirvana). daniel johns didnt "lose his passion", on the contrary, he found his true path and creative center. This began with Neon Ballroom, and progressed through to this album, with The Dissociatives music playing a heavy influence on this album

  • Not as bad as Straight Lines at least...

  • Whether you like or dislike Silverchair's newer sounds, anyone who denies that Silverchair's music has EVOLVED and MATURED is in denial. I personally am not as big a fan of their older stuff as I was when I was a kid. I think that says wonders about how far they've come. Like it or not.

  • i love all of silverchair's stuff. old and new. i like that they have variety. it's not the same old crap over and over. they have evolved. and it's their own sound. when i hear their stuff, i know it's silverchair. unmistakable.

  • Why is it that everyone compares their newer albums to the older ones. Although, they are not the same, what's wrong with that? Silverchair generally doesn't regurgitate their older stuff into a "new album". They have matured with their new albums and given us something different every time.

  • this songs got as much energy as any of their songs, its got up beat rhythms but it's got its dark parts too, its got everything..

if you are a musician or appreciate music, you will indefinately like this song, along with those thieving bids, if you keep losing sleep etc.

they are not conventional in the slightest

  • I like this song, but I'm not sure I'm too into their new age stuff. I like "Straight Lines" but some of their other new stuff makes no sense to me. I still love Silverchair, but I love their old stuff better. Bring back my lovely grunge rock n' roll!

  • I'm appreciating their mature sound. Although it is lacking in the heavier grunge side... Still, good album!

  • OMG man, wtf happen to them? Sounds like a completely different fucking band. And not for the better. Excuse me while i go listen to Emotion Sickness.

  • I think that the major concern of the fans of old Silverchair, is the fact that they lost their way all together, their feel, their sound, the whole lot. It's just like if coca cola introduced a new flavoured drink and called it coca cola. it may appeal to some, but its not the same as the original, regardless of the fact that its made by the same people. If someone tries to tell me they're being original, they'd be lying to themselves, this sounds the same as 80% of modern indie today

  • Silverchair did become a different band. One actually worth listening to. It's a shame that they are making amazing music and people won't give it the benefit of the doubt because they are Silverchair. The fans who like the old stuff will probably not like this -- because it actually requires a willingness to listen to interesting, original music. Similarly, the people who would find this interesting will dismiss it because of the name attached.

  • great song.....you guys...don´t keep hanging too much on the past....life means changing

  • Ironic, really. Most bands get better as they mature.

  • First album I don't actuly like from them . Maybe next will be different.

  • I have to agree that Silverchair does change and each album is different and thats why i LOVE them. They don't just pump out the same crap like godsmack or korn type bands. There music changes and matures, they are true musicians, enough said!

  • I say it all the time, and so does Daniel. They grew up! They want to move away from what they did as kids to reinvent themselves as adults. He doesn't hate it, he just wants to put the past in the past and move forward. Notice, Daniel took over everything from 1999 on He and I are quite alike in how we write. We write what we feel. Not every song I write sounds like something I've done previously. I love that about Silverchair. Everything is different. The albums and even the songs individually.

  • ive loved every album they did.. but for me when they did diorama they really came into their own..

find it a bit annoying when people just want them to churn out frogstomp over and over again...

    long live silverchair!

  • this is the only song I know from this band, but it is INCREDIBLE. The Falsetto at the chorus is sweet.

  • yea i mean about the way i feel about it! because i just dont like this new sound....if its what they want then fine! but wat really ticked me off was they dont like their first 2 albums,,,,they did so much on those albums....they were amazing! it just sucks that they put them down!

  • so true man, the first two albums in my opinion were unbelievable. and they actually disowned them? whats with that ahah..

  • u see the last thing i said? "im not hating this band ill always be a fan,,,,but not every band does albums u always love"......so im just telling my opinion ! i just hopethe next one is better !

  • @stpisbackforgood Yeah, I know you weren't hating on them. I'm talking about when you said "their old stuff is better and it's nothing anyone can say to change that". That's alittle more than an opinion, but nevermind.

  • old stuff was the best,,,,,and its nothing anyone can say to change that ! im not hating this band ill always be a fan,,,,but not every band does albums u always love!

  • @stpisbackforgood So you're telling me your oppinion is fact, and everyone else is wrong to like this better than the old stuff? Not that I do.

  • @adrianoeliezer123 ...in your mom's mouth.

  • he says frogstomp is disappointing ?? this is disappointing ! frogstomp and freak show were two of the best! i dont know what to say about their new stuff!! oh well!! whatever!!

  • Well, I like it, lolol.

  • i like the old silverchair better. we cant expect music from frogstomp and freak show anymore though. its the past and daniel said that he has "disowned frogstomp" and that "its not silverchair its an old high school band noone should know about" its dissapointing that he said that but i love the music not daniel so it doesnt really matter to me. we got a few good albums out of them.. get over it now

  • true essence - still =D

  • What a piece of crap they´re doing..... they should change the name so people know it is not the same.... they should call themselves Sweet Life or Disco Party Nights or The Killers from Down Under...

  • or prissy prancy pussies

  • I understand that bands grow and evolve with each album, but I'm rather disappointed with this one.

It seems that all of the bands that I've listened to for years have been releasing total shit lately.

I'll always love their old stuff, though.

  • who gives a shit,,

    we all have different taste

    ,

comparing silverchair cd's, is like apples an oranges

silverchair doesn't mindlessly pump out albums to make money they do it for the art,

and they grow and morph with each album

If you cant evolve with the bands sound than you are living in the past,

we all have to grow up sometime

  • Totally agree man! I love the different era's they have! Can't wait to hear the new album. Oh and IYKLS is my favourite from YM. It's all good though.

  • totally agree... the have cds for the phases! diorama is the best in my opinion... but i can't say this one isn't great!

  • @BCHQQ Exactly, couldn't have said it better! Silverchair!!!

  • man, Diorama is probably one of the best albums ever. you need to give it a chance.....

i didn't like Young Modern at first, but it's also brilliant, daniel johns is a genious. bottom line.

  • that's bullshit! Frogstomp is the best! btw, its not Daniel Johns...it's Daniela Johns...Daniel Johns was already dead after the Neon Ballroom Album...

  • no is not, specially from silverchair... their best albums were Frogstomp and Freakshow and thats a fact noone can argue about, cause thats when they were really grunge, the genre that made them who they are today.

  • why can't we argue about it? because you said so? i don't like grunge and now? i have to like frogstomp???

  • we argue about anything we want... you are trying to make your opinion universal by stucking it into people... go listen to your grunge crap and just come back when you learn how to talk

  • Diorama and Young Modern Album sucks...i like more the old Silverchair...GRUNGE...Pure Massacre, Freak, Shade, Israel's Son, Ana's Song (Open Fire), Anthem for the Year 2000!!!

  • I found that I start to like the Young Modern stuff when I stop comparing it to the older stuff. Silverchair didn't move in a different direction, they became a different band.

  • Sounds like Blur...

  • who rated this 3 and a half stars?

  • this is a really good song, ahh jeez..Daniel has got to be one of theeee cutest guys ever :P

  • Haha, I know! But I like thier older stuff better. And yes, Daniel is absolutely gorgeous. XD
