well the actual surfing is real, the actual is real... the surfer actually surfing in that storm is not real. when they blur out the camera right after they zoom into the surfer... they probably put in a shot from mavericks or something that looked exactly like the form of the wave from the storm except with a surfer.

They then spliced it in with another clip of Grant Washburn pulling out of an insane barrel. They then composited this into the "news" footage after then zoom and disguised the transition with a quick motion blur. Good eye!

It's probably Powerade's best commercial, though the one with the 'unlucky spokesman' getting flattened by various England rugby players is definately the funniest. The hits are real.
I contacted Powerade a few years ago when it first appeared on TV. I was asking if they planned to add it to their web site and they said no. We exchanged a few more emails and the Powerade rep said it wasn't real - none of their commercials are real. It's all CG.

actually there is a point on the right of the screen. to get out to the "lineup" all you have to do is walk along the point and it looks like an easy paddle ove to where the waves are breaking.. and he might've been towed in as well, you can't tell.. also, the boat is a sailboat.. we're not talking a giant ocean liner here..

Look at the wave just before it breaks. there's sunshine reflecting off it's inner surface. It's a hurricane weather day, strong winds, completely overcast and it's raining. There would be no sunlight reflected off the water like that. And if you look at all the objects on the street, none have clearly defined shadows, further proof that the sun isn't out.
OMG i know the powerade commercials are so pimp. they were my fav when they came out. theyre so fake though but imagine if they were real? the michael vick one is just hillarious...this ones my fav cuase u can see the effing boat in the background in the water...its liek turned over hahaha
