Wasn't this full video supposed to be due on in January? I noticed the new teaser is for a third full video (altoids kit), so is this one still coming? I like the premise of this one.
Hi Dave. Have enjoyed both features and looking forward to more. Thanks to you and your team for the efforts. Dissapointing that so many of the group let you guys down by bailing on you early.
Also, would have liked to have seen you spend a bit more time demonstrating at the end, what the participants could have done differently. For example, use of the flashlight/battery, etc. Just a suggestion definately not a criticism
Awesome stuff, can't wait to see the whole video! Thanks a lot Dave, for everything. Hope you and your family are doing well, take care and stay safe!
If they are hunting then they have guns. Remove a bullet or shot from a round, replace with cotton wadding from a tshirt. Strip another round down. Pile gunpowder in tender. Point blank shot with first round and you would have sure fire.
@Djohnstone1969 I don't think they were hunting man, they found an old hunting camp but they weren't hunting themselves. That is a good trick though that a lot of guys forget to do. Even in those wet conditions you can get a fire going with that.
I live here in Newfoundland, and if it is not raining it has just stopped and it will be raining again shortly unless maybe it is snowing. Survival means an axe, a ferro rod and good quality rain gear covering wool layers. You can't just say i have had enough I am going home in the woods
This is a very hard thing to do. And if you dont get fire you better be snugglin up with your buddies or your most likely going to get hypothermya. And it is noo easy task getting fire in down poor!
It's hard to say without actually being there, but there was likely a chance to find enough debris large enough that was there would be found dry wood in the middle. "Many hands make work light." The guys collectively could have come up with plenty kindling and larger to sustain a small fire and dry out twigs and small limbs, and slowly build it up under the protection the tarp. The battery would have lite gunpowder then cotton by using a strand of the wire that would have glowed red hot.
@BoJoMo47 On that type of flashlight there is usually a wire. Of course this might be a different design? And if there is not, the heavy spring wire on the battery itself could be used. Although the battery is low voltage, it can produce a fair amount of current, especially when new as that one is. The current is what will cause the wire to glow red hot. The glass on the bulb could be broken off and the wires that hold the element can be attached together for the same effect.
@BoJoMo47 Typically in that type of flashlight there is switch located forward of the handle, and that's where two small wires run to. Once stripped and surrounded with gunpowder from the shell and covered by the cotton, just turn on the switch. The ignitors for model rockets work in a similar way. One could set off their own model rocket remotely in this way...
That really had to be a Miserable night, rain rain. I was blessed with the ability to buy a North Face Tadpole23 Tent, I have spent rainy nights like that in my tent and stayed dry. After watching this video it really makes me appreciate my tent. and for the one who quit don't sweat it you made the most logical self preservation decision available went home and got dry. every one knows that in a true survival situation that decision is not available so yeah one would have to stay and fight it.
Nit picking aside. Basic knowledge is a MUST for anyone venturing into the woods. You can't just "quit" in real life and I can see why many people die every year from exposure. These guys put themselves knowingly into a situation and they quit. Goes to show you., don't take these skills for granted. everyone seems to have an opinion sitting here in front of a computer but put 99% into these situations and they fail. Do not take this stuff lightly. Practice. Nice insight.
This series looks very interesting and instructive as it puts the skills we all know, into a realistic context. Have you considered a using a storyline approach with external narrative?
This is a tough situation... I don't think I could get a fire started with what they had and the conditions. I think I would have concentrated my efforts on a shelter to get out of the rain and preserved my remaining energy to just make it through the night as dry as possible. Maybe gather wet tinder and kindling to dry out for first chance at a fire when conditions permit.
I think I understand they were to be lost in the woods with only a knife?.... I'm just wondering how many guys that carry knives would not carry at least one method for fire, even matches? ....As wet as it was i'm thinking starting a fire might have been a challenge for most guys either way. I'll be watching the full video for sure!
@nativerobin the next time you are on a hike, ask the day hikers you run across what they have to make fire. I think you may be surprised at exactly how many people go into the woods completely unprepared.
@CoastalBackWoods My point was the kind of guys that would carry survial knives would more than likely carry some sort of fire making option...the avergae day hikers i run accross are lucky if they don't walk off a cliff LOL
CANT wait for the WHOLE thing to come out. Stupid 8 minute teasers. Hey Dave, anyway you could do a 15 year old scenario? :) Id love to give it a shot. I think im much more ready than the first couple of guys. Not to say i love freezing my butt off either:)
I can see how hard it would be to set up a survival camp with more then two people. We all have our own idea of whats important and what should be done but when I see three guys standing there and not working to improve their camp it makes me sad. Okay if these guys watched any of your videos they didn't retain much or listen to any instructions given. I would have to grade this group with a D- Rain/wet or not FIRE comes first maybe its the way the vid edit came out these guys do need your help
@jsadler14537 It seemed like a lot of energy and time wasting going on in most of video I wasn't there so I cant say for sure. but this video defiantly didn't make anyone shine. left you all open for comments good or bad.
Second vevans! I loved the dual survival series I just watched the north west episode this morning I had DVR'd called soaked. I love the new channel can't get enough. I like following the yurt too! Hope you guys have a great year keep it coming!! This video was a little tough to hear but it just shows how much it was raining.
Dave, I love this idea you've come up with. I believe Cody and you, with Discovery took reality survival shows to a different, more "real" level and with the SAN channel, you are going a step further. Bravo my man; excellent!
Great effort from those guys for sure. Can't wait to see the whole thing. I think I would have tapped out about the time they handed me a bow drill! I can't get one of those freaking things to work on a dry day. Bet they would have killed for a mini inferno kit about one o'clock eh?
Looks great. Still some issues with sound. Any chance you can mic up everyone? I know its not cheap. Failing that, a waterproof hand mic used reporter style? Would improve the post production quality and professional finish greatly. Thanks for doing the vid everyone. UK bushcrafter
I love the "honesty" of these videos. It really puts thing in perspective seeing "common men" attempting the things you teach in videos and frankly make them look easy most of the time. I just wanted to say that I appreciate the videos on this channel, as well as your other channel. Keep it up, good sirs!
This was a rough challenge, understand variables are always introduced to see what problem solving and priorities happen. The sound was a major pain and forces us as a group to improve for the next vid as well. I will clean this up the best I can prior to posting the feature. I will shoot a vid tomorrow to explain how we select volunteers and set up scenarios as well as rational behind them.
Wow! All that moisture and rain. Those are some hardcore volunteers to take up a challenge like that. This is going to be a great learning experience, I can't wait!
if its freezing and drizzling cold rain and all that you have is your knife then you are not making fire...Period!
The old pros can do it caveman style using friction but even then its not guarenteed especially with rain. Best advice would be to hunker down and get ready for a long cold one before you get into "WTH" mode in the morning when everything is soaked, everyone is hungry and everyone is cold. My kids were making camp fires alone since age 8 but out there with no supplies... no mas!
I am on the edge of my seat waiting for these videos. Thanks Dave and Iris! Lets not forget to thank the rest of the Pathfinder crew as well! Oh, and if you need another volunteer, I'm here to help! Thanks again Pathfinder School!
I commented on the previous upload, looks like that has been deleted. I am still interested in knowing how you "pick" the people to do these scenarios. Is there a Lottery? or a fee?, I am really interested in heading over to Ohio to give this a shot, I am located just east of Indianapolis. And i just want to say how thankful we are that you continue to teach us the knowledge you have spent years studying and perfecting. Keep up the excellent work and I look forward to seeing the full feature.
At 4:58 I still see the two beer bottles at the base of the tree. That means you still have a beer tree on the property. What happened to the original video loaded several hours ago ?
@RichTheRidgeHunter Every man for himself! Somebody has to take charge or this group will have major issues. I just wonder, is it in the "rules" that no one has any fire tools?
