yup thats correct, they removed the other cab ends so that there would be more space in the car. ive wondered bout that too at one point. good video Jd and good background info as well wildcatt.
The thought was that in off-hours(late Sunday evening, for example) they could run single car trains as was (is?) done on Cleveland's Red Line. At one time the MBTA (and its predecessor, the MTA) had union contracts requiring a driver plus one conductor for every two cars. This meant that there were 3 workers on a 4-car train! Today, we have 6 car trains and, at most, a driver and conductor.
There was also thought about running 1-car trains in overnight (owl) service, but it never came about.
well at one time, until platform extensions to older stations in the 1980s, the red line could only run 4 cars max. 2 car trains were seen in the off-peak, primarily because of lower ridership than today and union contracts as described by WinUser04
0:20 when built in 1969-70, the 24 01500s were single-cars, and the 52 01600s were married pairs (hence the number difference). the 01500s were converted to married pairs in the 015/1600 overhaul in the mid-80s, same time the 01700s were delivered (as all married pairs)
cept for the blue line the other 3 subways has complete cement tracks that sounds like scary rolling stones when the trains runs on them do you know why its that way??
at 1:49 is that the Big Red?

In what direction is each train going, by the way?

Alewife is the terminus; the camera was positioned at the Russell Field side (where the trains come and leave)

The Red Line in Cleveland operates only in sets of one or two cars, in fact, and never six like in Boston.
