shooting a horse was like someone blowing up your car in front of you.... no wait... scratch that... shooting a man's horse was like shooting their best friend - the fat prick in this scene got off easy ;)
Tom horn has anger management issues no doubt. he wouldve made a good villian for clint eastwood. anyone agree? Who was a more tough guy bad ass, clint eastwood or steve mcqueen?
The musical score & sound dept on this scene amplify the act of violence 10 fold, making it horrific. More than the bloody visual garbage you see in most films today. That is the beauty of a combination of fine acting and directing that is sorely missed in films today. All bang, no skill - ZERO story - just endless visual noise. Tom Horn was indeed a brilliant film & Steve was as classic in his later years as he ever was.
Real Tom Horn toted a Win. 94 .30-30 but I'm glad they brought in a black-powder roarin' '76 instead. Much more dramatic and screen-filling.That is hands down the most awesome western ever...and my personal favorite! Can't figure why neither AMC nor TBS never air this one?
MY GREAT UNCLE PUNCHED A HORSE IN BETWEEN THE EYES AFTER IT KICKED MY GREAT AUNT IN THE HEAD IT DROPED DEAD AND MY GREAT UNCLE SHOT IN THE THE HEAD 4 STATE OF MIND
True, he short stroked the last shot but it was in character that he did...he was really upset about his horse and was shooting as fast as he could.....great scene....McQueen should have did more westerns.
the horse really did get killed by accident in that scene....not to worry though the cast and crew cleaned cooked and ate the horse on location....steve got super fuckin pissed at the time but later stated that the horse meat was delicious especially the stew they made....read this little tid bit on wikipedia....crazy times back then !

Hands down, toughest hero ever to wear suspenders.

Nothing savage about it. Kinda normal reactin for shotting a horse.
Good acting over came a pretty bad script.

lol what a shot, falls off his horse and still gets a headshot

The shift from pedestal/tripod to hand-held as the horse is shot is brilliant directing. Adds to Horn's anger/instability.

This is one of the greatest westerns and by far the best acting Steve ever did. Unbelievably great performance.

Brilliant. Underrated classic. McQueen is sensational.

If you ever owned a good horse-with personality and smarts you would comprehend Horn's savagery.

@cholulasaucehot You mean the use 'live' rounds to shoot that scene? Unless the horse got killed some other way.
