I don't think light wanted to kill L after L said that light was his friend, but light couldn't have anyone willing to stop him from creating a world without crime. In the episode where lights sister get kidnaped by mellow, light thought about killing her, therefore, based on that fact, I doubt light really wanted L to die but if L had lived, light may not have been able to create the new world
