Furthermore - the greatest love scenes in the book are between Clyde and Roberta. Sondra is really a rather silly rich girl with her Clydsie Wydsie idiotic talk and for the greatest part she simply toys with Clyde and laps up his attention without any real deep interest on her part. But anyway that is the book - how disappointing though as I hoped there would be a fine version of the great book on film.

I am currently reading AT by Dreiser, on which this film is based - when I heard Liz Taylor was in it I naturally assumed she would be playing the factory girl and that someone like Grace Kelly would be playing the rich girl (Sondra) - so seeing how Taylor plays "Sondra" I have to say that this film really is simply based on the book. How Winters could be cast in the role of the lovely delicate, sensitive Roberta just defies belief.

Elizabeth Taylor was chronically late to the set prompting Paramount Studio head Robert Evans to fly off the handle. Her tantrums were so loud Richard Burton would purchase hotel rooms above and below to keep from disturbing others.
