@Snike888: you are pathetic! Dick! First of all he wasn't in pain " mr knowitall" and second if he was and you laughed and I was anywhere near you I would litteraly......... I just said it but I don't feel right typing it for the sake of you and other viewers!
I'm curious. Gelding a horse is very common. But do they ever remove a mare's uterus and ovaries to prevent breeding or is it usually a caslick (sp?) for them. If they do, what would it be called?
@imatroll5 I've never heard of it being done. removal of the uterus is a more invasive procedure and requires the animal to be fully sedated (unconscious) during and for a short while after. Horses do not respond well to anaesthetic so there is a much higher risk of death, even with such a simple operation. Most of the time it is quite easy to keep mares separate from stallions if the owner has no intention of breeding.
Stallions can be very unruly. They will mount a mare even when she has a rider on her back. In California, it is illegal for anyone under 21 to ride a stallion in public due to their sometimes difficult to control behavior. It's better to geld the horse before he reaches sexual maturity. A horse gelded after reaching sexual maturity will sometime exhibit the same behaviors that he would as a stallion. This is known as being "proud cut".
Dee, it's not that horrible I promise. Besides horses are herd animals and to avoid fighting or having mares gain unwanted pregnancy, the stallions are usually kept by themselves. Getting them gelded allows them the chance to be with other horses which they enjoy above anything else. Also Stallions tend to be a little more aggressive with their owners so getting them gelded makes them safer to work with. I wish it didn't have to be that way either Dee.
The horse is drugged, doesn't feel more than maybe some discomfort and recovers within a very short while. as a bonus he is less prone to heart attacks and many more other illnesses leading to early death commonplace in many stallions. What is often overlooked is the reduction of breeding animals in an overstocked market. Reducing breeding population cuts down on unwanted horses with nowhere to go and thereby reduces suffering of the poor creatures PETA has ironically doomed to a miserable end.
@deedx It's so cruel indeed! It would be much better to let them be as they are in nature! In the wild, horses form separated herds of mares and stallions. Stallions "happily" fight each other until only one of them is left standing and more or less in one piece... then this winner goes to the mares and is their king until a stronger comes, tears him to pieces and so on. Yeah, we should let our horses merrily kill each other!
Really, people tend to forget that "mama nature" is NOT "humane".
@camuialexa if you do not like a hourse as it is just don not keep a hourse!! people (like you) tend to forget that they are not at the center of the universe...just try to get out of your small anthropocentric point of view and you will see how these kind of action is violent!
No Deedx, let's let our horses reproduce willy nilly and end up with a MASSIVE overpopulation of horses. Then we can send all of them to the slaughter house and then our dogs will be fat with horse meat and our children will be happy in their schools with plenty of glue for their projects. :)

If it's cruel, then why are geldings healthier than they are as stallions?

how come horse experts call fixing a male horse gelding insted of being neutered? Is it a different procidure?
MistysJournal 1 year ago
no for the males it is basically the same procedure. Dogs and cats are usually de sexed so, I dont really know why they are called different thing.
o0BelleVisage0o 1 year ago
@MistysJournal because you dont call ita neuter after its been gelded you call it a gelding... it makes sense
XxRisingVelocityxX 1 year ago
@MistysJournal no just thats what a gleded horse is called a "gelding" once gelded
it help buyers on the market looking for a horse that is not a stallion
