I have a really bad case of stress induced IBS which I've had for 7 years (I'm 20) and am going to undertake a Colonoscopy here in the UK to determine if it's anything else. I heard that sedating people is common but I really really hate injections, I'm not sure if I should brave the discomfort (nothing that doesn't already come with the IBS) or face my fear of injections... I don't like the idea of being in discomfort for 30 minutes while this is going on... Not sure what to expect.
@Khrisper take the sedation..your goona get an IV anyway and they put the stuff in there to put you to sleep or relax you...if u had it done already then ignore this advise...lol
So far every colon this colonoscopist has done has been perfect. Here in the UK they only do a colonoscopy if there is a problem. There is supposed to be a screening system for the over 50's but due to too many patients and not enough colonoscopists its all in disarray.I have had the procedure done many times due to bowel problems.Last time round things were so bad I had to have it done under GA as I couldn't take the pain. Before things got worse I have had this done no trouble at all.
@bluedragon611tak Hey BlueDragon, I live in Denmark and I will have a colonoscopy in a few days (I am 34) and my doctor wants to see if I have an inflammatory disease. I am concerned about all I read regarding scope poor sterilization in some hospitals in the US and probably many other parts of the world. Is this true? Shall I be concerned? :( Shall I undergo the procedure? :(
@silver760 I agree good job by the doctor and glad 2 c patient looked to be ok too =))
I had to be put out completely on my 2nd scope due to adhesions and endometriosis near rectum..things r ok for me @ the moment but my 1st scope was a horror :-(
that's 2 bad in the UK that u have to have problems and many ppl have to wait to be tested*
@silver760 yes I am in the USA...how do the doctors know who and who does not need a sedative? that is very cruel! I was sedated for my 1st one but not completely, the dr. didn't know I would have issues until I woke up crying and telling him to stop, he added more sedation and I finally went out..if u have no problems it should on b pressure pain but it you do have issues u could be in pain..anyway this needs to get done in UK as much as the USA or anywhere! Sorry for you in UK :-(
@auntjojo1980 They only administer a sedative if they think the patient might be combative.I have had many upper GI gastroscopies, again no sedative was ever given. The upper GI is the worst as you choke and gag if not sedated. They dont use sedation as it requires hours of aftercare, without it they can do it and then boot you out the door.Instead of sedation for upper GI they use 4/5 people to hold you down so when you freak out (and you do,its a normal reaction to being choked)
@silver760 For colonoscopies they do the same, instead of a sedative you get held down, just in case. The upper GI is the worst as you cant breathe at first, you want to puke and as they inflate you with air you end up "Throwing up" the air. They use the same scope for upper as they do for lower.I found this out on one horrendous visit where I had upper followed by lower with the same scope.I just hope they clean the REALLY well.
@auntjojo1980 The other thing I was going to mention apart from very long waiting lists (years) is that in order to reduce the time taken for the procedure, certain steps are omitted. For one they rarely use a sedative and instead of whole bowel irrigation using oral polyethylene glycol they use Picolax.Picolax is cheaper and easier for the patient to administer themselves, even though it is utterly foul and causes severe nausea/cramps etc whereas PG just flushes the system.
@silver760 I feel so sorry for ppl in UK if that is thier protocol.terrible way to do things, I had Go-Litley drink and it was disgusting, not sure if that's the same as the drink u mentioned, u have to wait years in some cases? OMG, awful, I guess the UK wants ppl to get colon cancer and the they will have to pay alot more for the treatments..again just cruel!! come to the USA and have it done, I have a great doctor.
@auntjojo1980 Go-lytely is a polyethylene Glycol soloution and is far gentler on the patient than picolax, but as it's more expensive and takes longer to administer they dont use it here in the UK.There is supposed to be a screening program for colon cancer in the UK,but due to there being too many people and not enough GI suites/people it has become a disaster. The screening program cocks up all the appointments for people needing GI investigation.I wouldn't get ins in the US due to
@silver760 having pre existing conditions. If I could get insurance it would cost me a fortune and wouldn't cover treatment for what I already have.Only thing to do is to get enough money from somewhere to go private and get it all properly sorted,at the moment I cant work due to illness and all they do in the UK is treat the symptoms, not the cause unless it becomes life threatening.I've been on massive opiate doses for years now along with many other drugs,I still suffer terribly.
It isn't painful, can feel slightly uncomfortable at times due to the air they push through, but there isn't any sharp pain as such.
The preparation is the most uncomfortable part. They squirted a liquid substance up my bottom and your told to hold it for ten minutes - i'll managed to hold it for 3 minutes maximum. Be sure to have a toilet vacant - it feel's like a bad case of diarrhea.
Like it is something routine, and so bad that the procedure-giver is just clicking, AND must have advertisements that every colon looks different inside -- which none should be shaped like a hollow triangle, and have red veins; unless there is a problem.
I want ask, if is it painful? Im afraid. I have problems with alimentary tract. I was gastroscopy investigation. Was it ok, it wasn't painful. But now Im afraid. I know nothing about it. You can advice, please?
Hi! Thank. My grandmother underwentthe colonoscopy, she said that is it disagreeable experience, but is it bearable. Propably consist in doc, and technique.
No pain at all. They do inflate certain areas with area to get a good look but that is more of a cramping feeling that quickly passes. I have one a year due to frequent polyp formation and believe me, the prep is the most intense part. Once you get to the center, they put in an IV and give you enough anesthetic to float you away. It sounds scary, but you will be fine.
@Elunaj I just had one a week ago (in the USA) the preparation is hard, no solid food the day before and heavy doses of laxatives. The test itself was easy. They drugged me and I don't remember a thing, I woke up and went home. If you have a problem have the test, dying from colon cancer is what you really should be afraid of and I guarantee that is painful..
this dude has to be sedated , i had it done this afternoon and it hurts and its mega uncomfable noway could you lie there so still.... trust me this is not an esperience you want..
i had no sedation and no pain killers, the mixture of being uncomfatble and pain is really bad...
hahah i had 3 nurses doing mine,, he gets a blooody guy... pml unlucky.....
I had a Colonoscopy to day went into hospital at 12:30pm and was home at 5pm. Everything was ok, even the drink I had 2 take the day before and this morning tasted like a lemon flavour drink. Made it up in 3 small continers put in fridge for a few hours and drank it through a straw worked perfect. No memory of the procedure and No pain at all
Just had a colonoscopy yesterday. The worst part is the digestive track evacuation and the little blue dress. They gave me 2 injections and I can't remember anything form about 10 seconds after the second injection till I woke up after shortly after the procedure. I also had a polyup removed with no discomfort. After seeing this video I am a little disturbed though..hehe.
To AznAngel, No not really asleep, they try to talk you into taking an amnesia drug. To where you don`t remember the test. If you are low pain tolerant I would probly recomend it. But I did mine no DRUGS, but they still insisted an I.V. just in case I changed my mind. You will be given oxigen. In my test they couldn`t reach the far end of my intestine so I ended having a barium enema, also. The crap you gotta drink to clean out your guts before hand is the worst part. Im no dr. this was my test.
I am up for one soon but I'm needlephobic. I'm not looking fwd to the procedure but the arguments with the staff re IV or no IV are of great interest to me. I have good pain tolerance (no numbing for dental work etc) so I should be OK from that perspective.
