What I don't get is the lyre they can invisibly cut through things with a fatal force, making me think it was sound waves at a frequency so intense they could do that.

When the sabers and fists started appearing I thought "okay, so it's sound waves that have the same effect as punching or slicing". But if that's the case how could the guy deflect them? A staff isn't dense enough to stop sound entirely right?

So are they sometimes using actual sabers and are throwing them down their sleeves?

tbussard says it all. This movie is magnificent storytelling. When the spear master begins his salvo against the assassins, you really can't deny how awesome he is supposed to be. It really sets the stage for the other two masters. The weirdness of their characters is beautifully offset against the fact that they can overcome what the first three masters could not.
