  • I declined using ham radios due to one reason: There's fewer people to talk to than in the 90's, and my old buddies are gone.

But I still listen to broadcast bands, and to some extent to local public safety bands. My interest in dxing the BC especially in the Shortwave spectrum stays the same. In fact I still collect radios and bought myself an Icom R5 and a Radio Shack DX390..

Time will tell when the lines were out and Internet unreliable, we still be needing ham radios for emergency use.

  • I Feel Your Pain Man!

  • I know the feeling. Been an Extra Class Ham for 38 years and hardly turn on the rig anymore. I'd much rather pursue my first radio hobby, SWBC DX which is more challenging (IMHO).

  • It has changed for sure. I have been into radio since 1977 and I still talk daily but only DX.

  • DUDE ITS DEAD...... THE NEW CB HOBBIE IS CALLED REPEATERS. LEARN REPEATERS AND HOW TO MAKE A REPEATER! YOU WILL FIND A AWSOME HOBBIE WITH YOUR COLLECTION

  • try rtty or psk, it takes more effort to type than talk, the negative people won't put in the effort--- also you don't need much pwr to get decent dx

  • Hi...this feeling is normal and it happens to most hams.....if you dont feel like using your equipments....then....just dont....for now.....lol......go to your other hobbies............but one thing is for sure.......you will definitely miss the PTT swich.....the noises from your HF............QSO all over the world........CW sounds........that's why...dont sell your equipments......maybe put a cover to prevent dust from coming in.......fire them up once a week..just to keep them working. :) 73

But you know i pick in chose who i wantt to talk that always works best for m...

  • Also, in your area of New Newfoundland, you enjoy very quiet winters, electrically which is IDEAL for low power CW, QRP !! Many guys would love to live somewhere like that.

QRp is working as far as you can with 5 watts or less. In 1989, I worked Tokyo and New Zealand with one tenth of a watt. Both locations are 8,000 miles from me here in SC.

You have some decent gear for QRP and CW... You might want to work on your code speed and give it a try. I'll be glad to work you anytime from SC.

  • Having had a background in Ham Radio since I was 14 and Rail Roading several times, watching the trains go a round and around gets boring real fast.

For me Ham Radio is also getting sad in recent years but I continue to enjoy using CW, code.. CW for me was a chore in the beginning but after I kept playing with it my speed went up and now it's total fun..

Collecting old keys is a fun hobby too.

  • Keep your hobbies, YOUR hobbies. Don't mix your friends and hobbies or build friendships upon hobbies. As relationships sour, so will your enjoyment of that hobby. Friends outside of your hobby = healthy friendships.

Get off of local repeaters/nets/CB's. Go HF, stay relatively anonymous.

Sell relatively worthless single purpose 12/6 meter equipment.

Get a cheap HF/VHF/UHF rig (Yaesu 857) and an antenna tuner. Its all you need, small footprint, and you can do it all.

    Good Luck.

  • man you got some good stuff i used to be into cbs and i sold all my stuff a couple years ago and now i am in the middle of buying them again my advice is to try to find a whole new group of people to talk to my intrist this time instead of talking to locals is to get a am ssb cb and a good antenna and try and do some skip shooting that doesn't call for talking to the same person twice people can drag you down but don't let them screw u out of your love for radio we need to preserve the hobby

  • Maybe the better conditions on the HF bands now cycle 24 has kicked in will help pique your interest again.

  • that's the good thing about a HOBBY, you join in and have fun, when it stop's being fun you quit and do something else like model trains. you can always pick up a hobby again.

Perhaps we'll see on air in a couple of years :)

  • i have enjoyed watching your videos .you have a talent a gift to be able to understand and repair cb radios .its the time that people sometimes dont know what someone like you put s into repairing a cb radio even if its replacing the finals you most likely come across other faults in the circuit that you see.keep up the good work 73,s from christchurch new zealand.

  • Hi I'm in St. John's and a member of a wonderful group of people involved in Dxing with small Ultralight radios. You can find us on Ultralightdx in Yahoo Groups. Maybe this type of Dxing could possibly respark your interest in radio, we invite you to check out our group ..... Regards from Allen in St. John's

  • Distraught over radios??? Whatever. Get a new hobby.

  • Sorry to hear you feel that way Darryl. I would certainly miss your great videos on Youtube as I find them interesting and informative, maybe you could carry on mixing radio info videos with Youtube to keep the spark alive in this hobby. If you did decide to go may I congratulate you on the videos that you did make concerning radio.

  • @coyoteuk Geez, everytime i get a reply like this i ask myself "Why am i getting out of radio?" I keep getting the same answer, I cant give it up! Thanks for the nice comments there, they mean alot, i have been trying to get a spark on the go ever since i posted this video, and so far so good, i even got out Bicycle mobile tonight and 11meters as will as 10meters was rocking, video tonight BTW!! plus another, Yep!! i will keep posting videos, not too worry!

  • If a hobby isn't fun - don't do it. You sound as if you are as disturbed by the relationship you have with others in the hobby more than the hobby itself. If that's the case, try a different mode. Use cw :). There are a lot of different things to do in ham radio. If one of them doesn't suit you - take a break. Almost every ham I know has left the hobby for a while and eventually come back.

  • @raccoonnyc Thanks for that, some people i have meet in the hobby certinally has placed a damper on things for me, and that is so sad, for them that is! for it is folks like them that need to find another romper room to play in, i am trying to get interest again, it is hard, but with the good weather finally apon us, i see the future of my radio hobby looking bright again, besides Feild day is this weekend, and who in there right mind would miss it? Not me! thanks again m8. :-)

  • i feel the same way i took the radios out of my car

  • @1488erik1488 Lucky for me, i never even got that far yet!

  • well there is always sw listening....

  • @yinglyca Oh yes, and great hobby it is, i still use my shortwave rig a bit.. Radioshack DX-394

  • You may be experiencing burn out,you work at electronics assembly all day and then,at night and weekends, you repair and build radios equipt.Just like auto mechanics, work at it for years day and night and then, they get fed up with it.I am not a mechanic as you know,I seel auto parts all day,but I like to relax with radio and dx'ing in the off hours.73,Take a braek om,Don,VO1XH

  • Well the way that i feel about you giving your radio hobby up is that you have good health, you have a good family and you have love in your life so you are blessed already, some people never get the chance to have one or the other above.

Hobbies whether radios, trains, planes etc, these are material things and can always be replaced at some other time in your life if you choose to go back to them.

If you lose your good health, good family, good friends or love, you have nothing, hold on to them.

  • Ive been a ham since i was 15. Im now 57. Yet ive not been active for many periods. The bug comes and goes. Its fun. If I had kept every rig I every bought or built, well, that would be good. Im sorry i have partedwith old rigs. So let me suggest,

keep your rigs, even if yo have to put them into storage. Radio is something one can walk away but do not be surprised if you, at a later date, you come back.

  • @wj2l Alot of folks are saying the same thing, what i think i am going to do is sort out what i need to keep versus the stuff i dont need! now that is going to be a very big thing to think over.. :-)

  • I hope your not depresed.Remote control airplain are lots of fun and there still the use of a radio.

  • @honeybees1 i have been thinking about that to, if i did i would really want to place a onboard camera in them, i think that is so cool!

  • and NFLD probly has alot of streams etc, or even fly fishing the harbours

  • @utuberevlimitracing yup, we certinally do, i have loved fishing in the past, i have tried fly fishing before and it is fun, only thing is that sometimes the dang fly gets caught on brush and trees behind me. :-) What i have been doing lately is just the basic gear and works good too, hook, worm, and line weight, hey works for me!! :-)

  • @radionut63 Yeah I hear ya

When I go to creeks, I need to find certian positions for a good *cast*,

also depends on how busy spots are with other fishers.

and I know alot of *normal* rod creek fishers, sometimes hate fly guys, usually the fly fishers who just takeover a huge area and dont care.

  • @utuberevlimitracing BTW i am planning some outdoor trouting videos this summer, keep an eye out for those vids...

  • What about fly fishing,

Its awosme tying your own flies and landing fish, especially when everyone is using noodle rods and roe bags, and your catching more.

  • It seems healthy to have more than one interest or hobby. If you're getting burned out, you certainly have the right to pursue other interests.

My problem is I have too many interests and not enough time.

If you think of radio like you did model trains, you might want to keep at least some of your gear in case you want to come back to it in the future.

Do you still have the desire to continue making videos, even if your primary hobby changes?

  • @field16 yeah, maybe that is the problem, im burned out from this hobby, i guess im at the stage of my life that something has to change, and i just dont know which direction to take, with regards to me makeing videos, hell yes!! i have a new account made called: VideosOfNewfoundland, and that keeps me occupied alot! Yes your right, i should keep some of my gear and store it away just in case, but just do i keep? i have so much stuff its crazy. I may just have a Utube auction soon. :-)
