  • emotional...melancholic...a real masterpiece!

  • Possibly about "Bubbles" Rothermere, widow of newspaper proprietor Lord Rothermere. She could be found around London nightspots, a funny/sad eccentric figure who - like the other artistic creation she inspired, "Bubbles" De Vere of 'Little Britain' - was living on past glories as an actress, boozing on dwindling life insurance money and battling obesity and a heart condition. She passed away in 1992.

  • this song never fails to make me sad...

  • It is amazing how a song can be sarcastic and emphatic, funny and sad - all at the same time.

  • The man has such an insight into the human condition. A beautiful and sad song about a life built on looks, money, materialistic things. Love Neil's voice - Great Post.

  • FAntastic

  • Proper Artist, Proper Music, Proper Class.

  • Proper Artist, Proper Music, Proper Class

  • it's just a beautiful combination of words and music. it's a tale of a loveless marriage and it's consequences. i'm tired of getting a lump in my throat over the violin in this song and the fact that i can't play it front of anyone without the risk of filling up. it's just one of those incredible songs

  • I really can’t explain what exactly makes me feel so…whenever I hear this amazing song

  • Very nice, I love it!

  • i really cant understand why neil doesn't have the chart sucess he so rightly deserves.he is the best singer songwriter of this generation but peopkle would rather buy all dat so called rap and R&B crap that seems to dominate the charts these days.

  • I was wondering recently why Neil Hannon hasn't received a knighthood. He deserves it for sure. Now I see his upcoming CD release is called "Bang goes the Knighthood". Looking forward to hearing it. Way to Go Neil...beautiful, beautiful musician.

  • SUPER, DC is tops!

  • beautiful.

    thanks for posting.

  • I still haven't figured out why exactly this touches me so much... - Maybe because it is so authentic? Because of the great way of singing, the voice? Anyways - whenever I hear this I get goosepimples - over and over... - and I can't stop clicking this! ... like a TeleTubby - Again - Again!!

  • i'm almost tempted to take up a life of trogging down the seine. its a frickin faboulous ditty. its pretty much beyond compar

  • Such a beautiful song! In fact Victory of the Comic Muse is nothing short of a master piece!

And he's from Northern Ireland?! How did that happen?

  • I like to think this being about the same woman as in the Peter Sarsted song 'Where Do You Go To My Lovely?'

  • I can't understand why my daughter does not like him !!!!! What a strange girl (and she is from N Ireland)

  • MAGIC!

    Thank you so much.

  • Ooooh... I had this song on loop for about um - 3 weeks and can now summon it at will from my murky mind to soundtrack any heart rending scene I happen to survey. Hooray for Hannon!!!Thank you for posting.

  • A song of a certain charm

    Beautiful indeed.

  • I love this man, truly.

  • Actually Unplugged! Actually Acoustic! (unlike many things that claim to be)

  • Does anyone happen to know the chords to this? I think it's cappoed on the third fret and then starts in Amin but I'm too rubbish to work it out and can't find a tab or anything! Would really appreciate any assistance! Ta!

  • website for tabslyricscords but i wll check i have to look through all my boyfriends bookmarks again but if you have no luck get back to me and i'll write them down for you. As my boyfriend is married to his guitar, im sure he wouldnt mind sharing sites with u. The artist himself has just waltz in and said it's called tabheaven, done a little diva tantrum and walked out again. A'nt live grand.

  • Thanks Broken Blood Stain Doll! I can't seem to find this song on that site though. If you get a chance to jot down the chords for me, I'd really appreciate it!

    ex

  • Great!!

    i love this song!!

  • Wow. I wish I could have been there. You were SO lucky to have seen this!

  • I love the DIVINE COMEDY. Saw them in Seville 1999.London 2004.London 2006.Madrid 2006. Neil Hannon is a genious. I need to download this video to extract the audio. "A lady of a certain age" is my favourite song from the last album.

  • I don't really mind if he's Irish or English, but Hannon's skills as a songwriter and performer are unbelievable. One of the greatest artists; and with an extraordinary sense of humour that many others haven't and probably envy.

  • g major heroes in 2007!!! horseshit

  • Neil Hannon was born in Derry in Northern Ireland. He moved with his family to Enniskillen, in County Fermanagh, in 1982. So if you don't mind, and if you will allow me this once, we'd like to claim him as our own, up North... :-)

Though if I may paraphrase from "Sunrise",

"Who cares where national borders lie

Who cares whose laws you're governed by

Who cares what name you call a town

Who'll care when you're six feet beneath the ground...?"

  • Is it really necceasary to Divide our Island into North and South just cos the British occupy Ulster? you and Irish I am Irish Neil hannon is Irish . WE are Irish. Unionism is a nonense buddy, everybody knows it.

  • Oh sorry....I didn't realise you wanted to bring sectarianism into it. I repeat, for you are obviously hard-of-understanding:

  • Divine Comedy are Irish! And beautiful =]

  • didn't know that french can play so beautiful music

  • Divine Comedy are English, but yeah it is such beautiful music

  • I love these musicians.

  • the cameraman's work is all intentional. it's brilliant. like introk said, it's raw and artistic. very very amazing.

  • if there is someone out there hinting at thomething better than this, i`d be glad to be linked to that stuff, if not, let me spread my fucking tears all over the world ignoring my reasonable age of 35

  • Hey, your style sounds oh so painfully familiar...Just, rather than "all over the world", your tears will be spread more likely within this corporate-controlled e-community...Anyway, I agree with you: this is painfully simple crystal-clear beautiful pop music...

  • thanks so much for this, it made my day :)

  • I love this song, thank you for posting this :)

  • What a beautiful performance! Shame about the shitty camera work. Wasted opportunity.

  • at last someone agrees

  • wow

  • love this song

  • camera man is an utter wank

  • the point of it is to look raw..notice you can hear traffic noises in the background..he's being artistic...watch some of their other videos..nockin fob

  • and so are you! ;)

  • divinely brilliant =]

  • and strange how a song about an english lady can take on an altogether different meaning hen the camera pulls back to show an american lady of a certain age...a little spine-chilling given events of the recent past

  • just great

  • wonderful wonderful, deserves to be heard by more people!!

  • oh my god. incredible. it's almost more powerful when it's stripped down to guitar and a couple stringed instruments.

    i love this video.
