Peggy Lee was a real CLASS act - probaly the bets white , female singer fo the 20th century of popular music and really dedicated to singing and performing. She could sing the dictionary and make it sound cool.
Thanks for the nice reply - Peggy Lee also made a wonderful apperance on Judy's show during that same (1963-1964) television season. Incidentally, a few years after her TV show ended, Judy was asked by an interviewer who HER favourite female singer was - without any hesitation Judy simply said, "Peggy Lee." Great choice in my view as wel!
"Blackbird" ("Bye, Bye, Blackbird") was sung in many different tempos and I salute this more mellow version done by the great Peggy Lee.. As for this song, my personal favourite version is the "duet" in which Judy Garland sang this to the fantastic Bobby Darin (on her television show in 1963). It's "out here," on YT, if you've not seen it. Cheers!
Some great pics!!! On thing I loved about Miss Peggy is she always looked like she JUST loved being a star. She probably blew kisses to the paparazzi instead of running away from them.
@iwantmyjulia From the song it sounds as if your saying "goodbye" to grief and sadness. So it might be something of that nature. Wikipedia's meaning of "Bye Bye Blackbird" was kind of too... edgy for me...
This is a slowed-down bluesy version, and if you're used to hearing the song done fast (as I am), it takes a while to get used to it. Music such as this used understatement to get across...and it works beautifully.
Nice. If you type in Mills Brothers Bye Bye Blackbird then you get a hip fast version. They are both great. Goes to show how talented these musicians were
in my dance class we did a musical theatre unit and we had to perform to this song, but i was a really fast tempo of this song. does anyone knw who sang it? my dance teacher said look up valarie pettiford, but when i looked up her version it was really slow. can someone help me please!!!!
@Danielle9730 It was written in 1926 and covered by many. Here are some - Josephine Baker, Georgia Brown, Joe Cocker, Bing Crosby, Miles Davis, Etta James, Keith Jarrett, Diana Krall, Peggy Lee, Rickie Lee Jones, Trini Lopez, Dean Martin, Billy May, Mitch Miller, Nina Simone, Ringo Starr, Mel Tormé, Martha Wainwright, and Mark Weber.
@John1948Ten Great list of people... but one of my favorites is Liza with a Z's version. It's her usual spunk and support dance/singers who do this bang up job. Also look at the special movie Fosse, they do a fabulous job too. love that song. Peggy Lee and her torch songstress way, Josephine Baker... so 20's and awesome. They're all wonderful. Thanks for posting
@TheAlienAndTheTree A CD that has the King Kong version is called "Black Coffee, The Best of Peggy Lee." There are copies in the British Amazon website. The cover of this CD shows Peggy's face , with one of her hands under her chin. (Almost all the other current CDs and downloads have this version here, not the one from King Kong.)
@TheAlienAndTheTree Yeah I guess it is positive. Hey, when you're doing a little research on the classics, just ask your parents for their old records or even your grandparents! I have always been a little into the whole peggy lee, ella fitzgerald, etc. stuff but it really was my dad who taught me the basics ;) I do hope this so called new generation of ours catches up real soon, because it's SO worth the attention, don't you think!
@TheAlienAndTheTree Just keep looking through my channels and you will get a lot of it. From there you will start to see what you like and broaden your search. This is a major reason that I make my uploads - to expose the younger generation to the oldies. Here is my channel index - john1948[DOT]wetpaint[DOT]com/page/John1948%27s+Youtube+Index - Just remove the [DOT]s and replace them with periods.
@TheAlienAndTheTree Well, the song is also used in public enemies but no one is referring to that movie when they hear this song. Still, you're right about the new generation not really knowing the classics wich is actually a shame! I mean, if one does like this song, they should get more into classics. That way the classics-education won't be going via the modern films.
I like this song and I like Peggy Lee, but these "crooners" sometimes drag the tempo until I want to blow my brains out. But thanks for posting its music history and a real service for you to post.
@irchristo Peggy Lee's version of 'Why Don't You Do Right' (1942) is quite up tempo in comparison to the Jessica Rabbit version (recorded in 1988) which I find annoyingly slow. But I agree, some old covers can be a bit too slow, but there are many older songs with fast tempos.
This is one of two versions of "Bye Bye Blackbird" that Peggy recorded. Both are wonderfully mellow. The other version was heard in the recent King Kong movie.
I don't know if it is on MP3 but you can find it on CD. If you go to places like Amazon and type the full title "Black Coffee and Other Delights," you'll see a CD that has it.

This song should just NOT be linked to King Kong. It's a classic, it has a fame of its own and Peggy Lee singing this really adds to that!
