  • Wow, this is a trip down memory lane, we (Pocketeers Limited) developed this Quake demo for GBA years ago. We also did a GTA 3 style and car racing game demos to show the C2 engine. The 3D engine was an super optimised polygon renderer that worked with restricted degrees of freedom and compressed textures. We had to take all reference to the demo down because we used Activision content without their permission. I went on to convert Doom from Jaguar to GBA.

  • @PocketeersLtd

I hear bad things about Doom for the GBA.

    But.

Your version of Doom was the one that sunk it's hooks into my body and tore some meat away. When my world was falling apart, and I was suddenly without a roof over my head, it was my escape into a welcome insanity, where options were few, and the answers obvious.

    Thank you.

    A few questions?

    1. Why the low resolution? Was it the cart size?

    2. Were developers warned about the GBA's lack of lighting?

  • @DejaVoodooDoll The conversion was done quickly so we didn't get teh chance to super optimise the rendering engine. GBA had no real 3D support, especially lighting so it was all done in software

  • @PocketeersLtd

    3. Anything you can tell about issues porting the Jaguar code to the GBA would be wonderful - Atariage seldom hears anything new about the system, but the Jaguar fanbase is one of the more dedicated ( perhaps a bit too passionate, sometimes...) communities around.

  • @DejaVoodooDoll I loved the Jaguar, was ahead of its time when it first appeared. Porting was actually incredibly easy. Basically it was a source port, then a replacement of the audio, rendering, input and addition of multiplayer with a few optimisations.

  • THERE IS QUAKEDS !

  • thumbs up for the epic quake 2 into music

  • the gba has no builtin 3d features, but it can be done trough software, just like the 32x wich also seems to have no 3d features builtin, also the sound system is simmilar to the 32x,it has 2 8bit pwm channels, whereass the 32x has 2 16bit pwm channels, also the 32x has an extra 32bit proccesor so there,s way more power left for other things

  • The GBA is one powerful shit! Who'd have thought this was possible? I see some idiots coparing the GBA to the DS and PSP. Hahaha. Morons.

  • They couldve done it. just with no freelook and with the Doom GBA graphics

  • Unfortunately, having an adequate control scheme for Quake on the GBA is out of the question. Even Doom was pushing it.

  • @MyNameIsBucket

i think doom on gba was great. But thats probably bcoz im a huge fan of it.

  • @scythe1998 Yes, and they did an even better job porting Doom II to the GBA. Too bad Quake didn't make it over.

  • this wont work on actual handheld.Only on emulator.

  • ok theres gba quake so where the fucks jaguar quake

  • Verdamt

  • Absolutelly no.

Maybe you could say the DS and the n64 are somewhat comparable in terms of capacity, but they have nothing to do with each other architecturally other than being binary calculators like any computer in existence.

The PSP has nothing to do with the PS2 either.

  • @radornkeldam Nintendo's next handheld really should be a mobile gamecube though (minidvd not too big for a handheld and would be able to sell the games to people who still have a gamecube)

Though it really ought to be more powerful than that nintendo's handhelds are always a generation behind everyone elses.

  • @mynameisleeyesitis No, the GBA was ahead until the DS and the PSP

  • @sonikku956 No it just didn't have any big name competitors so you didnt notice how technologically obsolete it was. Check out the gp32 released at a similar time to the GBA its as powerful or more powerful than the DS.

  • @bobbystar101 Just because it has homebrew? Idk, could you explain it to me dude?

  • @sonikku956 WHAT lal "explain it to me DUDE." that made me lol hard

  • @haxor758 Was I talking to you?

  • @sonikku956 YES because if you werent than you wouldnt of put it on a public video you would have private messaged the guy derp.

  • @haxor758 Well now I'm talking to you. And who responds to an 8 month old comment?

  • @sonikku956 I do

  • Graphically this looks way better than the DOOM GBA ports(that look crappier than the SNES version IMO)

  • Actually, the GBA games mimick the psx/32X versions, though is more pixilated in resolution.

SNES actually didn't have floor and roof textures.

  • The doubt here is why the GBA port looks pixelated up to the point in which the SNES,version looks slightly better(even with lacking texturing). It's not the screen.

  • Oh right, you know I did notice that they enlargened the guns to which each pixel uses for LCD dots.

Next to Duke Nuken, I suppose your right. Doom actually had a lesser resolution in the BGs then the game screen is why this is. Duke for GBS looks abit better.

  • I can think about 240 x 320 in the GBA port of Doom.About the backgrounds, the original Alpha Doom looked more detailed and not so repetitive, who knows,if that version was released,it could have been the Crysis for PC of the year 1993.And yes,the port of Duke Nukem you talk about looks better,I agree with that.

  • Wolda Ben Awsome

  • oh yes it is buddy. google up C2 game engine for GBA, and you will see.

  • were do you get it?

  • Where's the music from?

  • I dunno, in my opinion, Doom didn't port to well.

  • @nyahnyah5 How didn't it it was very similar to look at and play to the pc version

  • Looks like a more advanced ray-casting engine.

  • I've got the original video of this, why have you added music over the top of it?

  • wow¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡

  • nice!!

  • I guess technically it is workin with a 32 bit CPU, but I've yet to see a 3-d game handled well on the system. The MGS demo, doom, duke nukem, ecks vs. sever all of those fps games look like stuttering, muddy, pieces of crap. And why would a 32 bit system get soo many 16 bit ports?

  • Because Nintendo originally designed it to be a portable SNES.

  • 16 bit quake? gag...

  • It barley even looks 16-bit to me? I can't believe this GBA.

  • GBA is 32bit

  • Very cool.

  • Amazing! The GBA was a great console.
