  • This vid is a favorite on Philippines

  • Man I can't help but smile every time Pavarotti corrects something. I just heard the song, but Pavarotti makes the song sound different. Different as in 10x more beautiful xD. He truly is the king of dynamics!

  • If Pavarotti only would have taught this minutes, they would put him into a wonderful place of universe. His piano is absolutly admirable. So soft and so well supported in the meantime. Uff. If I could do this 1/10 as good I would be a GREAT singer.

  • pavarotti shouldve recorded di provenza =[ that wouldve been the bestttt

  • LOL! Good one

  • I love how he's shaking his jaw when he's not singing

  • He looks very nervous ... I think he did a great job. Pavarotti is still the man though ... ripped him apart and then put him back together again. Amazing. Wish I could sing like that.

  • Guys do you know the name of this aria and from which opera is it? Thank you.

  • @SteveMontana21 di provenze il mar. il suoul from La traviata

  • @SteveMontana21 Di provenza from La Traviata, an opera by Verdi.

  • does he know italian?? hahhahahahahaha i cannot laugh

  • @oogeyboogie, one does not need to possess the talent to be able to spot flaws. All you need is a strong understanding of vocal technique.

  • what's the name of this piece? it's lovely

  • @nadimtaleb : Di Provenza from La Traviata. I agree it is absolutely lovely, one of my favourites from the opera actually

  • i like pavarotti's suit a lot. he looks so sharp

  • This student is too disrespectful.

  • @Eximius you're disrespectful

  • pav at 1:35 is hysterical

  • Pavarotti was a genius. Here he is attempting to teach of shading or coloring the music as he says from very soft to loud - pianissimo to forte, as the opera singer is conveying the message of emotion and music, as well as acting the part to tell the story. Some may comment on student vs. pavarotti interaction, but give the young man a break; he is in the company of pure genius and simply does not see to reach higher. I think Pavarotti is sincere in helping the man to reach for brilliance. RIP

  • LOL...man alot of the people commenting on this video absolutely slay me. I'll be upfront about it...I don't know diddly squat about half the crap you "critics" are talking about....but I do know this...those of you "strutting about" pointing out his "flaws, shortcomings, inabilities" are nothing but a bunch of elitist snobs. So let me ask you this..are all of you critics capable of singing as he did...or better? Hmmm...I'm willing to bet not. So you raise yourselves by criticizing. SNOOTS

  • @oogeyboogie there is nothing ever wrong with correct information. by the same logic, u don't know enough to criticize them either

  • I agree whith josemiguel95

  • This baritone is an asshole. Who in the world could dare to ignore Pavarotti? In the first part of the video, Pavarotti is trying to give him some indications with his hands and his expressions, and the baritone just ignores him, he doesn't even look at Pavaroti's expressions.

  • @josemiguel95 for your information, brian was very good friends with pavarotti and performed alongside him for many years! brian is a dear friend of mine and an inspirational performer and voice teacher! he is extremely talented and unless you can sing opera like him or be good enough to perform with and know pavarotti personally, i suggest you shut up!

  • @sarahloman Dear Sarahloman: In my comment I did not mention the beauty of his voice. I do not doubt he is an "inspirational performer and voice teacher". What I think is that it was not a nice detail to ignore Pavarotti's indications. As you can see in the video, Pavarotti is trying to "conduct" him with his hands and his facial expressions, and he just don't even look at Pavarotti. I shouldn't have called him an asshole, but he should have turned to attend Pavarotti's indications.

  • He don't know italian language.....

  • this baritone sucks..... so not fair he got this opportunity

  • parece o hector bonilla

  • Isn't that Hugo Drax from Moonraker?

  • @FiendishStormForce lol hugo drax absolutely.

  • This is a really tough aria. Its neither for a lyric or even dramatic to bass-baritone. It really requires a very versitile singer.

HE lives in the DFW area of texas now

  • Its interesting how well he manages to communicate such subtle and complicated points in English without speaking it especially well. I suppose this is why he says 'you must watch me' so he can use his hands and facial expressions as well. Its odd that he was so good a these thinsg in real life but still not much of an actor on stage, isn't it?

  • poor guy but hi have a great voice

  • Who is that student?

  • Brian Schexnayder. I may have spelled that wrong. He was at the Met for years. I was first exposed to him through the '83centennial gala. He was in the Lucia sextet (Chi mi frena).

I'm not a fan of his. Just not my taste.

  • I love the volume decay of his voice at 5:51.

  • thats why they call this a masterclass. Pavarotti takes him to school on support and dynamics. He was belting the whole thing without any shading. Pavarotti shows him light & dark shading. Soft and Loud. Perfect example of control. I love the guys reaction like "sure, easy for you" after Pavarotti sings it the right way.

  • And it's SO much better when Pavarotti shows him the shading.

  • Sounds like me! NOT. However, that's my problem! Just joking. But I am a contralto and I can't sing a lot of popular stuff.

I love this wonderful masterclass. Viva Pavarotti!

  • What aria is this?

  • "Di Provenza" from "La Traviata" by Giuseppe verdi.

  • The aria is Di Provenza il mar of "La Traviata" di Verdi. Act 2, Scen VII-VIII.

Di Provenza il mar, il suol

    chi dal cor ti cancello?

    Al natio fulgente sol

    qual destino ti furo'?

    Oh, rammenta pur nel duol

    ch'ivi gioia a te brillo';

    E che pace cola' sol

    su te splendere ancor puo'.

    Dio mi guidò!

  • ----->

    Ah! il tuo vecchio genitor

    tu non sai quanto soffrì!

    Te lontano, di squallor

    il suo tetto si coprì.

Ma se alfin ti trovo ancor,

se in me speme non fallì,

    Se la voce dell'onor

    in te appien non ammutì,

    Dio m'esaudi'!

  • sounds like Joan Pons

  • I think he has to much throat tension here this is why voice teachers stress using the breath. BUT Pavarotti covers it.

  • This is Brian Scheyxnader, Ping from the 1988

Turandot by Zefirelli, featuring Marton and

    Domingo.

  • Maybe the more stupid thing is the fanatism? And maybe this singer is just a man between men who does not tolerate the stupidity of companies and money and their buffons?

  • HARHAR!!! Hey you are very mean ;) but it's right - if I were on a pavarotti masterclass I would at least try to look friendly...

  • I love how audience claps for pavoratti and the gives that look.

  • THANK'S IT´S BEAUTIFUL!

  • I love pavarotti's way of Conducting... It makes me laugh every time... he even does it during his Pavarotti and Friends Concert to Conduct the Audience... :-)

  • I don't think the guy is trying to be rude. Just funny. Kind of like saying "well just steal the show Pavarotti". I highly doubt the guy feels he is anywhere near Pavarotti's level.

  • the guy needs to shave the ridiculous beard.

  • Are you referring to Pavarotti?

  • obviously not

  • Is very funny to see pavarotti doing strange grimaces!

  • leerzaam

  • The singer singing is a dink. Who gets owly when PAVAROTTI gives you personal constructive advice? 0_o

I love Pavarotti, though. He's so sweet. I could watch these masterclasses all day long :D

  • I love him and could watch for hours, I am pleased that you also goes like me, I am a very big fan of Luciano

    Everything good for you

  • ...I meant to say another legend in his own mind sharing a stage with a true legend in his time....

    aa

  • This guy was a real bonehead....the greatest singer of all time trying to help him out and he doesn't even look at him....some people, just unbelievable......also he doesn't sound as good as he thinks....another legend in his own time but this time sharing a stage with a true legend in his own time...

    aa

  • Kind of Richard Fredericks in his tone.

  • Looks a bit like Fredricks, too --

  • Luciano is a great teacher, I could watch the videos Master Class - constantly watch

  • it's a master class, our dear singer is focus on himself. would be nice and helpful to pay attention to the "master" once awhile.

  • What aria is this?

  • Di provenza, got it.

  • He is more suited for a church choir.

  • This is my voice coach. He's amazing. The BEST. He is truely gifted. Anyone that is seeking a voice coach I STRONGLY recommmend going to him. He's in Texas.

  • where in texas?

  • outside of dallas

  • pavarotti was your voice coach?!!! incredible!

  • not Pavarotti, hes probably referring to the guy who is singing

  • It is Brian Schexnayder, he later sung Ping in Turandot at the Metropolitan in 1988. He is a tenor, but he has got a good lower range as well...

  • Who is this guy by the way? he looks so familiar. What is his nationalities and where and when is this masterclass held?

please , if u know the answers.

  • lol pavarotti is like dancin on techno music

  • yes and hear the raspyness in his voice and the tension. He has a great voice though, but not as rich and smooth as pavarottis

  • i think he is good he just needs a little more work and he will be fine

  • after this he become tenor and a good tenor

  • A guy with a voice this low can't be a tenor...must be a baritone at highest.

  • you are wrong. This song is one of the highest baritone arias in exsitance and espeically one of the hardest. His voice isn't that low and I can give you a huge list of great tenors that can sing this, and can give you baritone sounds.

  • It's the color of the voice that matters, and he sounds like a baritone or bass baritone. I am a lyric tenor and can easily sing down to a low F with a lot of sound; but that doesn't make me a bass.

  • Pavarotti's so funny! lol :D

And he's such a master, he does everything, absolutely everything SO perfect, bravo!

  • hmmmm.... at first view I thought Brian Sschexnayder was TRAVIS TRITT! hehehhee.. At this stage he was still raw and all his faults are very much forgivable. I'm sure he had a good career in the 80's.

  • He became a good baritone btw. not world wide famous off course, but good enough to enter some major projects. Baritone voice is hard to train, and he wasn't that bad. Pavarotti said is voice was great, but it was too monochromatic during all song.

  • Too much tongue

  • He definetely has an extraordinary voice, but he is obviously nervous. Poor guy, to sing in from of that huge audience and Pavarotti is not an easy task.

  • is it just me.. or does this baritone have a lot of technical issues to work one?

he has a nice voice... but his tone is too harsh.. and he has absolutely no musicality

  • i don't know about the tone, but i agree about the musicality... of course i'm not really in a position to judge seeing how as i'm extremely unexperienced, but i would like a little more phrasing

  • Brian Schexnayder later went on to have a run at the MET. He can be seen and heard in the Sextet from Lucia di Lammermoor from the Met's Centennial Gala, October 22, 1983.

  • This sounds like Mark Delavan. If it is he has a major career going on.

  • sandwich like face

  • Does anyone know who this baritone is?

  • his tounge is back causing a further back sound, which makes him have to muscle

  • yes I agree with you..lots of tounge .. because of this he is also pushing his voice at the same time..but I like his color..

  • this guy sounds very good. so, I have no idea what some of the people on here are talking about. haha

  • wich are the name of that song?

  • Di Provenza il mar il suol (Germont - baritone: La Traviata, Verdi).

  • Pavarotti's poor English is so funny !

  • If I was as fluent in italian as he is in english, I would be more than satisfied.

  • This guy is very good ! You people who put him down don't know anything about singing, sorry !!!

    Where is he now ?

  • Poor guy doesn't know the fundamentals of singing

  • This guy seems so proud of his singing, and even Luciano gave some good suggestions, but the man still could not do that.

  • Pavarotti behaves not like a famous tenor in the world, but like an ordinar person. That's what I like and apriciate in him. Yes, his sings beautifully with a half voice. His "piano" is brilliant, soft, thrilling!

  • I would be anxious to hear this guy now. He seemed kind of uncomfortable especially on the higher notes. Like he was pushing a bit too much and wasn't getting the lift and coming down on top of those notes.

  • go to alfredo kraus masterclass, and you will see what pedagogy is

  • These masterclasses weren't meant to substitute for in depth teaching, they are chance for students to hear the critique of established artists. Some artists might give more or less depending on time. They are enjoyable to watch no less.

  • I don't think that being a great artist necessarily means that you will be a good teacher, just like being a good teacher doesn't necessarily require being a great artist. Pavarotti has said before that he doesn't want students in need of much training, just some basic guidance.

  • They aren't professionals, they are student and needs some advices.I'm opera singer and canto teacher.

  • I never belive that it's true,but Luciano Pavarotti it's a very bad teacher

  • Actually, no he's not. The people that come in and perform for the Master Classes are already professionals. Pavarotti just gives them a little extra advice, since they know their pieces very well (or at least it's assumed that they know it well, because y'know...they SHOULD).

  • Even so, there are novice singers in the huge audience and (i dunno) watching this clip online, who will also benefit from his "advice".

  • True. I have been a part of Master Classes as well, and though all can benefit, the core of what you're being taught at the Master Class is for the benefit of the singer...At least from my experience.

Just saying, that it's assumed that most people at a Master Class have a reasonably high level of skill, so that the teaching won't be remedial.

  • Pav sounds good even when not in full voice. He has an excellent sense and feel for the change in colors in music also, which you can hear in his own renditions.
