  • Food for thought. Some cans contain a thin plastic coating inside and the formulation of this plastic has PBA. Which has been found to leach into the food estrogen mimicurs. So whats the problem? Increases or hyper feminizes women and possible cancers of the breast. It effects men also but in a different way. I know when the lights go off thats out the window. But just a friendly FYI

  • even after 20 years if when you open the can it looks, smells and tastes ok, its probably ok.

  • so what does really long time mean ?

  • awww i thought you were gonna say you would eat the dog!

  • The key to stockpiling, is to buy stuff you'll use anyway, and cycle through your stash regularly. If you like canned pink salmon (I do), buy a ton of it, but start eating a can a week (oldest can first), and replacing it with a new one. Your stockpile is always as fresh as possible that way, without waste.

  • Love that you're willing to share your info...how do you handle friends and family members that might think you're (I'm) a little nutty? I was willing to teach a preparedness class for our local church, and the pastor censored the content of my class, saying I wasn't to scare HIS congregation...not everyone is onboard....any suggestions?

  • @TRAUMAMAMMA911 I wish I knew what to tell you,but I don't. I really don't tell anyone I'm a prepper! My wife, neighbor and my father are the only ones who know I prep! My friends think I'm just a hardcore backpacker.I never show people my stock pile!! I like to keep it this way because I never want to become a target!! Some friends know I'm a survivalist/backpacker but not a prepper. Some people wanna be in the dark on this subject because they think the government will save them. What a joke!

  • @TRAUMAMAMMA911

    Yes I have a suggestion.

Tell your pastor that it's his responsibility to protect his congregation spiritually for the here after.

It is your responsibility to help them prepare while they still have to feed themselves in the here and now.

If he chooses not to learn anything that you are willing to teach, tell him to keep plenty of spices on hand to help make that bible a bit tastier when he is forced to eat it.

  • Nice!! I just started building up my stocks and it's cool to see the "meat category" covered.makes me wanna go shopping at Walmart right now:)))

  • @SickNicksFab You can also add to your meat stock by learning how to pressure can. Chicken on sale? Buy the family pack and can away! Today I saw that the hamburger cost twice as much as chuck roast! So I bought a bunch of roast, ground some for burger and cubed the rest. I live at high altitude, so 90 minutes and 15 lbs pressure later, I had 6 pints of burger meat and 6 pints of cubed roast meat for about $12.00...Yummy! You can even buy canned meats at the dollar store! Good hunting!

  • SPAM, SPAM, SPAM!!! I DON'T LIKE SPAM!!1!

  • @greendragn Then don't buy it! I don't this video is catering to your personal likes or dislikes. Go find your binky and quit whining.

  • Sounds like you are also prepping with aquaponics. lol Soothing sound.

  • Good video.. is someone peeing in the background???..LOL

  • what if i buy these foods and end up not going through it all in the specific time. my start up plan is taking 1500 this month to go get foods. what should i get??

  • @wnyprepper Before you buy, plan. How many people in the home? How much room do you have to store? Proper containers to store. With that kind of money you can feed a few people for a long time. If this is a start up split the money between food, water, medical supplies and back up power for things like flashlights and radios.....plenty of good vids here on youtube. GL

  • @jelman67 Good info on spreading the wealth into several areas...Oh, and all you Rambos out there...make sure that you are actually trained to use all the "cool tactical stuff" in your war surgery medical kit..just the basics unless you REALLY know what you are doing. (I'm not talking about you, jelman67..its for the wannabes) 27 years in the ER has shown me that people do not rise to the occasion, they sink to their level of preparedness. Take an EMT course...worth the time and money. Prepare.

  • @wnyprepper Buy what you eat, and eat what you buy. Rotate your stock. Our regular weekly shopping trips go into our prep stock. At dinner time, we pull from our stock and replace it next time we go shopping. (and if anything is on sale, we stock up on extras and add to our stock. In other words, our daily pantry is also our prepper pantry. Happy stocking!

  • The truth is that canned food, particulary tuna and meat, are completely safe even 20 or 30 years after expiry date

  • @michelexe65 are you serious???....just asking because I want to learn....tuna is good for like 20 years? Actually, am I correct in assuming as long as the can is not bloated out and when you open it it smells ok, that means it's safe?

  • Thanks for the video. Today I opened a can of kippered herring that I had put away about 3 or 4 years ago. I could not find an expiration date. It was a little reddish-brown but did not smell bad, so I ate it. I haven't gotten sick yet. :)

  • Although I suggest after the shtf - don't keep your food where it will easily be seen - or found:) Think of people coming to steal your food!

  • Great video!

  • @nikandnat4ever just curious....not at all trying to start an arguement....why would these type people scare you? Just wondering

  • Nice one, good vid.

  • Rice has a long shelf life to. There is a lot to stock up for food wise.

  • How would you open a can if someone stole your can opener or it was compromised..say it got wet and rusty.or lost it somewhere????

  • @skitsy17 Knife...

  • Make your own MREs. Put the stuff you like in it.

  • Expiration dates are driven by the government to get the stuff to keep moving. Its just so sellers have to throw it away and the manufacturer has to make more. Anyone that throws cans away after the date are nuts. That is to say if the can is not damaged.

    Dont buy the lie.

  • @Tosy52 I did have a can of sauerkraut go bad the can was all rusted on the inside and the kraut was brown and it was maybe 6 months past the expiration date

  • When I was in the Army in the 70's, we routinely ate C rations that were canned in the '40's. They were just as good as the newer ones we got occasionally. I never heard of anyone getting one that was spoiled. Back then C rations had cigarettes in them. Different story on the smokes, those were sometimes dry and I heard they gave you a hell of a headrush:)

  • @stormcrow2525 if those cigs in your C rations were from the 40s no doubt they were un-filtered. Un-filtered cigs can definately give you a head rush.....even fresh ones made today

  • this is a great video, keep up the good work!

  • thanks

  • thx

  • container. This will kill any bugs that might have infiltrated the package. Keep the container closed after removing from freezer and let it come back to room temp. Fill your jars and seal. Works with pretty much all dry goods that you won't be using slot of at one time

  • For storing rice. I have a food vacuum that has an attachment that sucks the air out of canning jars. Just fill the jars put in a oxygen absorber and suck most of the air out. It seals itself. I buy my jars at thrift stores and yard sales. I also buy 2 pound bags of rice when they go on sale. There are only two of us so a quart of rice will last a week in a shtf scenario. I have rice that I put up 5 years ago and is still good. Just be sure to freeze it for 24 hours in a sealed plastic contai

  • Have u found out the expiration date for Twinkies

  • MRE's only last 5 years and can only be eaten for 21 days because they only have 1200 calories

  • @buckwheat40 I have opened some of my older MRE's from 1998 thay where verry verry good with no ill effects. store your MRE's in a cool dark place thay will last a verry long time.

  • @buckwheat40 As prior military myself, I have eaten MRE's and C-rats that were well over 15 years old with no ill effects. And as for only having 1200 calories, keep in mind 1 MRE is 1 meal. Eat 3 per day and that's 3600 calories so your only being able to eat them for 21 days is incorrect. Please do your research before posting erroneous information.

  • pretty much what i do.im not a hard core prepper but like to have a stash "just in case" when i go to the store i grab a couple of cans of whatever is on sale or i have a coupon for. i also rotate my stock.

  • 12.00 my ass i want to know where you shop at. that would cost over $20 at any winn dixie and even more at publix

  • well said, ..food for thought.. i like the items that you have on display. some of my comfort foods for the forth coming event.

  • I say eat the dog damn it, It will only eat my other food. LOL... Love the video to.

  • Well thanx for sharing. I'm definitely gonna give this some thought. That spam looks mighty nice. Think im gonna slice me up a few pieces and fry some egss.

  • thanks man God bless

  • Thanks for sharing this video, Always appreciate good sense

  • I had to pee 6 times during this video!

  • Good vid !! Thanks just what I wanted to know !!!

  • How can you stock up on bread or crackers? You can`t !! ThaT is what I would want with everything you have here. But wend you are hungry with or without that spam sure will be good.

  • @Acee771 Hardtack and canned bread?

I would also add, that some of the research I've done on canned goods say you can actually expect a 10-20 year shelf life depending on the food contents.

  • A vid for the thinking person. Good work!

  • I SUGGEST GETTING THESE FOODS AT SAVE ALOT & ALDI STORES!

  • thanks for the video good stuffs.

  • Good info... thanks! :)

  • I didn't see any canned chicken, does that mean it's shelf life is shorter than these? What about the tuna in the foil packages? Sometimes they run specials on those to where it's cheaper than the canned items..

  • @quietflight23 foil tuna doesnt keep as long as canned tuna

  • Great video, but here in VA, the two cans of spam an salmon would be $12. Where do you shop? Keep up the good vids

  • Outstanding prepping video, Thanks for Posting!

  • Buy a bag of rice

  • @princessleigh30 - Buy two.

  • and even if the can food has gone abit bad steal can be used fore bait . by the way if you get the cance try crawdads thet turn red when cooked and have a mud strike like shrimp but they taste great espeshely the claws thire is a trick to removing the mud strick look it up

  • jack mackrel is also a great long shelf life. excelent protien mackel patty are the shinizel

  • Great video… I have found that the pop top cans have a lower shelf life of about 3-4 years. The other stuff 5-7 years, with no notice change in eating.. the higher the salt content the longer it will last, just not that great for you to eat. We try not to store our wet canned stuff as a store and forget item.. I think to be safe it should be rotated through your normal cooking. Throw in a 5lb bag of rice with your canned meats and you can eat for a week. Thanks for posting.

  • damn! this has me thinking of a nice grilled spam and cheese sandwich!

  • All this shit is gross LOL

  • ALDI's tons of cheap canned goods. hurry though, hyper inflation on the rise. you wont get as much tomorrow as you could today. Cans can last a lot longer than the date too.

  • Mixed vegetable cans from wally world are only like 89 cents a can. Soups around the same, dollar store vienna sausages are a really good item as well.

  • Good video. Don't forget, chunk chicken. There is a lot of mercury in Tuna right? Thanks for posting

  • i found a dry soy mince 1 kg for £1.50 better protein value than corned beef and a very long self life

  • 10-4 i eat what i prep with-=right for lunch onion soup in can=70 cts

    1 can (tuna size) 1$

    handful of tortilla chips 15cts

gave half of can to female pit bull-she like it.

  • Good job! This a vid I hope gets around. It's a real service for those of us on a budget.

  • Nice vid but, however, I did see a vid from southerprepper1, he showed a "pull top" can of fruit that blew it's top shortly after the ex. date, so I would choose foods that do not have the "pull top" on them if I could find them, there are a lot of "canned" meats besides Spam to choose from, I know what you mean about the Mountain House stuff way to expensive for me or the kind that you special order too!

  • Good common sense. Mountain house is making a killing off rich people. Don't forget too we can BUY FRESH food or GROW it, hunt it etc... and can meat, vegetables and so on if we buy a pressure canner. Chuck roast is awesome right out of the jar. You can catch it on sale for 2 bucks a lb or so and can up 25 or 50 lbs and be set.

Anyway, good vid and God bless.

  • @vudumojo

I would appreciate a short instruction on Canning Meat. Please. Thank You.

I know there was an old way years ago for storing meat and they called it

Cold Pack. You know about that? Hope to hear from you

  • @CRAZYHORSE091 Search for this video "Why can beef instead of freezing?"

You must have a "pressure canner" not to be confused with a "pressure COOKER".

Tomatoes can be canned in a cheap water bath canner, but things like meat MUST be canned in a pressure canner. Once their done you can just open and eat right out of the jar or add to recipes and it's awesome and doesn't go back if the electric grid goes out for whatever reason.

Look for that vid and the channel name is larrylhall

  • @vudumojo Thank you for the info. Not sure what the difference is between a Pressure Cooker and a Pressure Canner? Can you tell me?

Also, the term Cold Pack..is nothing to do with freezing. It was a method of canning with some sort of Wax or grease sealing in the top of the jars. Thank you again.

  • Great video. I was hoping someone would do one on the shelf life of canned foods. MREs are expensive. Also would food like Ramen noodles have a long shelf life. I would also suggest rice and instant potatoes.Another thing you might mention to people that if the shit hits the fan you would definitely start rationing food unless you have like a five year supply or something. Keep making videos on food though because other than water it is one of the most important things to have besides shelter.

  • Hey, Great post! Also notice that these are all high sodium foods. Just saying for the people with high blood presure, etc. They do stay fresh for very long times, and taste pretty good also, if everyone takes out the "whats in this" idea. In a true survival situation, I can say, people are definiatly not as picky. These are GREAT sources of protein along with some other good ideas of great storage foods are fresh peanuts peanut butter other nuts nut butter beans etc. They also keep along time.

  • That canned Danish Ham is rather nasty after a year...(my opinion).

As for Spam...I think its the BOMB. Hawaiians cook it with everything. Theres even a Spam recipie book thats amazing.

  • good vid overall...can't agree with you on hoarding Spam...that is some nasty shit. LOL (Of course MREs aren't much better). One suggestion for all viewers...I believe you need a mix of both dried foods and canned goods. Prep with some dried foods in case you need to bug out as this will save on weight. Instead of spending a fortune on Mountain House, invest in a $25 dehydrator and make your own dried meals and preferably vacuum pack. There are recipes for dehydrated meals on the web

  • Is someone peeing in the background?

  • @sadeyedangel hahahaha

  • good video but cup o noodles and cereals last a long time as well, and vegetables last a long time as well.Overall good video bro.

  • Love this. Can u do a video on canned fruit/veggies and soup?

  • Comment removed

  • I started buying spam but noticed that the price is rather high. When I was growing up, we used to eat fried Treet sandwiches and it tasted very good. Consequently I am making the switch back to Treet which is much cheaper.

Another major issue when buying canned goods is that you have to TELL the person that is bagging your groceries to NOT drop the cans into the bag, but PLACE them in there! I have gotten home from Walmart and the selected undented cans I picked out were almost ALL dented!

  • Great video! I am looking at items that have a long shelf life also and from what I have found so far, is that Aldi has the canned hams and salmon you had mentioned. I am loading up on other things also but that is my store of choice.

  • pickled goods like eggs onions etc are they any good? plus my 80 year old grandad ate a tin of peaches 10 years past the expire date and nothing happened him.

  • Thank you very much for the information. I'm starting to store my in the basement. I'm from Chicago and trying to learn as much as possible.

  • You'll know if the food is spoiled, if the can bloats. l'd eat any canned goods regardless of time, as long as it's not swelling. Swelling, or bloating indicates gas from rot, or bugs, parasites, whatever the case may be. But if the can is bloated, and it hasn't expired? Take it back and get your money.Do not! Do not eat it under any circumstances..Good video bud

  • THANK YOU, BROTHER.AND GOOD LUCK.

  • MREs are the better choice for weight if you have to bug out. Hauling ass with a sack of canned food will slow you down not to mention how unhealthy spam is. It is full of sodium which causes high blood pressure. I guess it is all good if you eat that nasty shit anyway. Good Luck !

  • Canned foods can last 5 YEARS past their "expiration date." The flavor may start to change and the color / texture might change, but the nutritional value will be fine. Keeping the temp and humidity constant and low is the key. If the food was spoiled, you would know IMMEDIATELY after opening it - your nose will tell you right away.

  • Cool vid. Thx for the info. That crab meat sounds good. I think i'll have some of that even before SHTF.

  • also it helps that ur stomach will shrink over time so food will go farther in the long run

  • What criteria do canners use to determine the 'shelf life'?

All of the cans in the video were presumably canned fresh, then subjected to high heat in order to kill any bacteria. The canning process stops any contamination by hermetically sealing the can from any outside microorganisms.

Are there any regulations on canned vienna sausages? Who the hell knows how many years vienna sausages can last sitting stagnant in their can before they 'expire'?

I would not trust a $.72 can of tuna to last.

  • ... dude its Feb '12 nothing is happening.

  • Great, common sense information. Thanks.

  • Best to stick food you know how to cook and eat now. Cose if you buy 5yr of tuner an find that you rather eat your mother inlaw. Your wasting your time $

  • Thanks for the info

  • Very good information, thanks. How about bag of rice and bottled water you get from the grocery stores? How long can they be stored?

  • id eat the dog.

  • Canned herring fillets (kippers) last 5 years. They sell for $1 at Dollar General and they're very good.

  • Spam is great out of the can, on bread, or just as a snack on crackers.

fries good also good with eggs for breakfast.

  • I would eat people before I would eat span hehe. Great video!!!

  • @nx2overide HAY PEOPLE ARE GOOD... DRIED AND SPICED RIGHT

  • Thanks very much, very helpful...don't pay attention to any idiots that give negative comments. Peace.

  • The best thing is to buy them cheap and also buy a pressure canner. Take them out of the metal or steel can and start the date process over buy pressure canning them and you get to extend the shelf life of whatever you want to store. Thanks for the info in the corned beef hash though.

  • its really got to boil down to the metal tin degrading or leaking crap into the food. shame they cant make an inert metal last as long as the contents . good video mate im sure youre right with keeping the tins cool.

  • Canned Herring Filets that you can find at Wal-Mart or the Dollar stores usually have a best buy date that goes out between 5-10 years. I just picked up about 100 tins of them for $1 at WM and the date was 2018. Each can has about 300 calories, but pack a good protein and omega 3 punch. One can with a cup of rice and a few crackers is a SHTF feast.

  • I buy when they are on sale, you can really stock up for cheap on almost everything. There is i think a sale cycle of 6 or 8 weeks for most items.

  • Great info ~ Thanks for your time .

Don't forget so that we can continue to get to these vids easily from our subs and friends PROTEST against the New YouTube Channel Design ! Every SUNDAY!

    Look it Up on YT.

  • Great vid! What about fruits and veggies in the can? Do they last longer than the meat meals? Gota have the veggies too!

  • good info. Thanks..

  • dude canned food will last forever as long as its not been damaged in anyway ive eaten tinned food from the 40's! and that was bout 3 years ago haha never ever listen to the expiration date thats just companies covering their asses

  • Since this video was made Spam which we eat once a week anyway sliced and fried in a little brown sugar has become in such short supply that sams club for example can no longer carry it. Dak hams in the can are awesome also and the are never available now. I warn all reading this that as the number of preppers continue to increase supply will continue to drop and prices rise. Buy all you can afford before summmer!

  • No ones needs to take a pee suddenly, just people who think they're fucking funny.

People really get those kind of comments to the top?

What's wrong with the world, sometimes i wish SOPA Passed.

  • The salmon has the least amount of fat (I think) Fats are what make dried smoked cured meats go rancid after a while. They also sell tuna and salmon in foil pouches now that may last longer than cans.

  • you hit all my favorites....Im gunna be a great survivalist!

  • Great vid. I'd never use MREs. There are too many better/cheaper options. Atb TPD

  • this was just the vid i needed. thank you for the great info

  • nice vid !!! i have canned good's, 5 gallons buckets and some mountain house to!!! yes i know it's a little pricy but worth the money for a bug out situation.I think to have a backup plan such as food is very important for the transportation factor.

  • Good points brother. However, MREs are great light weight bug-out meals (entree only). Can foods are great in-place prep, just don't forget about when/if you have to move; then weight becomes an issue. And don't forget a can opener.

  • @CaliforniaCarpenter7 funny, Im peeing while Im watching..

  • @blinko656 Cool?

  • very good vid. thank you.

  • Smoked Oysters have a long shelf life as well. Very high in protein.

  • Good ideas. Many thanks. Spread the word.

  • I can attest to the ham having a long shelf life. My father always kept one in the closet. If he could talk everyone into substituting the ham on "feast days" like Thanksgiving or Christmas we would have roast ham. He made a ritual about opening it and always had a "witness." proof of pudding was that the gel was clear and not rancid an the ham had no slime on it and smelled good. We had to do this because not everyone like ham as much as he did.

  • Mackerel is also a high protein low dollar item.

  • My Dad served in the army in Germany in the late 50s. At that time they were eating WW11 canned food.

  • A pantry of MREs, canned foods, home canning, is not intended to last forever, but to give you a buffer of time to plant seeds, cultivate crops and shift to self-reliance off grid, or until the grid and posse comitatus can be restored.

  • dont forget peanutbutter

  • @larryclouse3, salt, black pepper, grape jelly, strawberry preserves, cinnamon, apple pie filling, cherry pie filling, Tabasco sauce,

  • I read online that ketchup, mustard, relish and mayo(?) packets last 5 to 7 years, the jelly in small tubs may last 3 years and that sugar packets also last 3 years.

I am not saying to loot your local restaurants, however these are somethings that you can get for free and stash a little at a time. Some of us don't like these condiments, but when the SHTF, you might be able to trade them to someone who wants a little "flavor" in their meals.

  • Noticed one thing in common - tons of salt! Was used long before freezers! :D

  • @blewis618 ... piss yourself dumbass.

  • good info, well done

  • Thanks for the info, great subject.

  • DAMN, MRE's are expensive, when I was in Millitary Cadets, I took home Cartons full of them for camping and what knot, maybe I should join the Reserves again to get my hands on free mre's, I am sure the canadian government wont mind..

  • Good vid man, I keep quite a pile of almost all of those items myself. Also at most dollar stores you can find rice dinners in alot of flavours for a dollar a meal. Raw dried pasta like spaghetti will last decades if kept dry and out of the sun. Real easy to prep on a dime if you do it piece by piece and rotate the old stuff as the new comes in.

  • Great video full of information. Appreciate the work and sharing with us.

  • Awesome video. Thanks for the time you took to do the reaserch..

  • And everyone should keep a P38 can opener. I keep one in my wallet and my survival kits.

  • Great vid! I in fact have several of those cans plus a few others (just checked after watching)! Keep the vids coming!

  • Made me re-think some things, thank you very much! ~Kevin, AZ~

  • Awesome vid dude great job, thanks

  • thanks again for the vid great stuff and info!....how about a vid on other stuff like medical suplies...pain killers, antibiotics , stuff like that

  • I'd say my neighbor's dog has a good ten years in him still, and the cats, those lovely fat, juicy and succulent cats..., why, they're teasing my taste buds right this minute!

  • thanku.

  • Hi Matt, Do you have a video for the shelf life of canned veggies and fruit? Thank you!

  • Thanks for the video. What about canned Green Beans and other canned veggies?

  • i just used a jar of sauce i had for 7ys, had a use by date of 2004 and it was fine.

  • Ring pull cans have a maximum shelf life of five years so avoid them!

  • @RICKYRASPER WHAT! i live in Australia and everything has a ring pull, damn but what you say makes sense, im thinking maby i can wax the ring pull edging ill do some research

  • @coolcub1 ..............soft wax will work, if you use a hard wax it can crack

  • @bonjovihair cheers thanx for that

  • Your water is running dude.
