  • Up to this point the only decent actor in the whole thing is the BARBER! He is totally convincing; the others are all sham.

  • Jeremy Irons - yummy. Anthony Andrews - yummy. :)

  • Anthony Andrews<3

  • I liked the part when Charles rode his bike through a big pile of horse shit as well.

  • the mic-work is a bit iffy

  • I want that teddy

  • @Gambitishott There have been at least two authorized reproductions sold of the teddy used in the film. I know because I bought both of them :-)

  • Why did they ever bother to remake this? It cannot be improved upon. This is the finest version of a brilliant book and has the perfect cast to illustrate it.

  • while I enjoyed the film, these two veterans have a far greater range and especially vocal prowess. Nothing compares

  • hear that PPEists? he says your second worst.

  • when Jeremy Irons narrates, well his voice does not convey the melancholy and the gloomy tone of Charles IDK i think matthew goode has an amazing voice!

  • unbefuckingleviable, I am bewildered about this show, thank you!

  • 7:47 - cycles right over what the horse left behind lol

  • can someone tell me what a "first" or a "fourth" is? sorry if this is ignorant..

  • @weiRdFishYorke

A "First" means a grade of First class honours' of which upon attaining the holder will be generally judged most worthy to base a high flying career with the subject.

With second and third honours the holder will either need to work harder to gain attention or have the right connections.

A "fourth" is a basic degree pass without honours.

One can see type of logic behind what Jasper's saying; "time spent on a good second is time thrown away."

  • @weiRdFishYorke first = wank & fourth = cunt

  • "Beware of Anglo-Catholics,"

Some viewers seem to have taken this to be a forewarning of Charles's later association with Sebastian; but they're wrong.

    He's a Roman Catholic.

Just to make it clear, Anglo Catholics aren't Roman Catholic that are English; they're high church of England. Which was at the time very much like the RC with rosary beads, confession and latin Mass.

Evelyn Waugh who was RC was just giving the ACs a little needle.

  • @Divertedflight The Flytes are not High Anglican, they are Roman Catholics. That is one of the points of the novel.

  • @holmsatlarge I'm not debating that. Just that I've noticed that many seem to think that, re Cousin Jasper's warning; that; Anglo Catholic = English Roman Catholic.

    Which of course it doesn't.

  • @Divertedflight.It seems obvious that it is a foreshadowing of his meeting Sebastian. How do you make it into a reference to High Anglicanism(which never shows up again)? It seems clear in the novel/series that Catholicism is a main thread, that "Anglo-Catholic""Sodomites with bad accents" points to the sectarian predjudice of the time. An oblique hit at Anglicanism is out of place.By the way,a nice concise explanation of the Honours system.

  • @holmsatlarge I googled 'Anglo Catholic' to see if it still held the same intention. According to Wikipedia it has now been largely been replaced by 'Anglican Catholic' or 'Catholic Anglican'. However, I doupt that Waugh was unaware of the meaning of the term when he wrote the book, and it was a strong unified movement, especially in Oxford.

Today it reads more as a foreshadowing of his meeting with Sebastian and perhaps the book is improved because of this. .

  • @Divertedflight Wikipedia?A quick dig through my ancient comparative religion brings to light your point.A sect whose thinly disguised desire was to return to R.C. church, but still claiming they were Anglican/Protestant.A well spotted pedantic point.I concede to your erudition. Thanks for the enlightenment, and the prod at my intellectual laziness. My comp, religion was deeply dusty.

  • @holmsatlarge Ha. Admittedly Wikipedia isn't always reliable on matters of religious belief.

    I've enjoyed our little dialogue.

  • @Divertedflight With your correct interpretation,Jasper`s high praise of Bridey now makes sense("A very sound fellow.").After all,in Bridey`s circle being "sound"was the epitome. If he`s slagging off catholics, such praise would be a non sequitor. These little points add to the understanding of the story.

  • James Wilby (9:50) really is a scarily close Waugh lookalike. He played Tony in the film of A Handful of Dust as well.

  • jeremy irons is perfect in this part. it is a shame to see him in the flashblacks as a young artistic free spirit when you know he became an ordered military person when he was older just going through the motions.

  • the strawberries scene is beautiful

  • @jindantang it is quite nice. :)

  • Hah...the good old days where revving up the motor meant something else entirely.....

  • 5:32 "Beware of Anglo-Catholics..."!

  • Excusez moi?!

  • 5:46-6:03. LOL.
