I read the Referendum 71 text and it does say that while it is not marriage, it will treat those unions as if it were marriage. I have to say I agree with you on that because even if you don't cal it marriage, those who oppose gay rights will try and roll it back. Thanks for showing us this.

before i really started thinking heavily about the issue, i didn't really care if it was called marriage or civil union. that was wrong. separate is not equal. not allowing it to be called marriage sends a clear message of second-class citizenship to the rest of the world, especially to all the gay kids growing up.

Christians are supposed to love everybody, I don't see anywhere in the bible that adds "Except homosexuals, you can hate them". Our founding fathers were Christians. "In God we trust".. The separation of church and state only means that our government can not mandate a particular religion on us. We have freedom to practice whatever religion we choose, but this country was founded on Christian principles.

I just wanna add to this discussion, that the 5 countries that legalized gay marriage in Europe through parliament (NL, Belgium, Norway, Sweden and Spain) that it was only possible because there were NO Christian/religious parties running in government. It were the Christian parties in those 5 countries who wanted to block it and voted no to gay marriage.
I myself happen to hold religious beliefs of my own and i can assure you any attack of peoples beliefs will result in a need to defend those beliefs to extreme measures. I would not like to be cut off from what i considered the source of my being.

I campaigned hard and voted for Obama because he promised Gay marriage and equal protection for all LGBT Americans. Now that he is President of the United States, I expect him to fulfill those promises and keep his word, otherwise I feel like my vote had been wasted. And for becoming a European Union member they arent even required to legalize it, but to 'only' make decent anti-discrimination laws for minority groups. Among those who filed suit against the passage of prop 8 were religious organizations and liberal churches who saw love as the ultimate family value. True, conservative Christianity is an obstacle to equal rights, but they do not represent all Christians. The nations and regions of the world which allow gay marriage are all majority Christian.
Case in point on religious groups changing: the UK's Quakers have just officially started lobbying for full marriage equality as a denomination. Many Quakers had been lobbying individually long before this - including all of my Meeting - but this is the first time a major UK denomination has come out in active support of gay marriage; most are either vehemently opposed (Catholics, NFI, Pentecostals, etc.) or deeply divided (CofE, URC, Methodists, etc.).
What does not religious mean? I appreciate the statement and know many christians myself who support. gay marriage. I also know "knowthyneighbor" and have found many christians who claim they care about gay people, who signed the petition!

Rape and abuse are akin to imprisonment, and they rob someone of their rights. Plus, rape and abuse do affect society. By turning a blind eye to it, its citizens are indicating their apathy with respect to being personally subjected to both. Incest only affects how others "feel."

Our founding fathers were Christians. "In God we trust".. The separation of church and state only means that our government can not mandate a particular religion on us. We have freedom to practice whatever religion we choose, but this country was founded on Christian principles.

Wrong! "In God We Trust" replaced the original, secular phrase "E Pluribus Unum" ("Out of many, one") as the national motto. It was because of the McCarthian Red Scare that caused this. It was later added again. Moreover, an increase of religious sentiment during the Civil War added that phrase in coins.

Just on this site we see examples of the dangers of religion.
One poster is all for gay rights, yet condemns science because of his religion.
Another fears great reprisal if you question another's religion or point out fallacies of it.
None of this is good. It belongs in the dark ages of time.
The truth shall set you free. The most atheistic states & countries support gay marriage. They have less crime, less domestic violence, etc...

I just wanna add to this discussion, that the 5 countries that legalized gay marriage in Europe through parliament (NL, Belgium, Norway, Sweden and Spain) that it was only possible because there were NO Christian/religious parties running in government. It were the Christian parties in those 5 countries who wanted to block it and voted no to gay marriage.

I myself happen to hold religious beliefs of my own and i can assure you any attack of peoples beliefs will result in a need to defend those beliefs to extreme measures. I would not like to be cut off from what i considered the source of my being.
we need to point out the humanty in religion and the tenets of christianity that include all.
I hope to get my head together about this and do a video on it at some point as i was raised ..and still consider myself christian.

WIth all due respect, however, it behooves all of us to question what we were taught from the crib. When I first had a lightbulb go off in my head, it was difficult to face the fact that I could be believing myth, but for the sake of future generations, I could do nothing but learn and ask more questions.
Truth is the only way for all of us to win. This IS a lonely planet and we are the only ones who can tend it

I didn't use extreme measures to defend my beliefs. Comments like that only prompt me more to understand the dangers of religion.
I see no humanity in the judeo-christian religion whatsoever. Also behind the pleasantries of ceremony, song & tradition lie hungry tigers waiting for the brains of the followers to gain their power.
Then there also must be the preachers & priests to lead the flock by lying. The comfort of their supporting flock enables the deception to continue dangerously.

As a christian, I really thought I understood my religion. After daring to face the tough possibilities that I could be wrong about it all, it didn't take me long to begin to realize that to call myself christian simply couldn't sit well with me any longer.
The faces we put on during religious years and the foundations we build are the hardest things to realize we must let go of for the good sake of others.
Can you tell your children you were wrong? Can you redo your entire foundation?

I campaigned hard and voted for Obama because he promised Gay marriage and equal protection for all LGBT Americans. Now that he is President of the United States, I expect him to fulfill those promises and keep his word, otherwise I feel like my vote had been wasted. Obama needs to keep his word and deliver the rights for all Gay people. He promised!

OutsideTheFox, isnt that just totally baffling, Albania wanting to legalize gay marriage as anounced by it's Democratic Party, who has a majority on it (74 seats out of 140). And for becoming a European Union member they arent even required to legalize it, but to 'only' make decent anti-discrimination laws for minority groups. There IS protest coming from its muslims and orhodox catholics, ofcourse, but politically, the cards are in the Democratic party's hands.

Thank you for being against descrimination. How I wish people such as yourself would do as I did. I researched my own religion and found out that it is something I simply cannot as a caring human be a part of.
We can be just ourselves and although we might be part of a group we choose to be a part of, we can always reserve the right to simply be the birth name we were given. Our own selves.

She is 13 years old and very Brave for going agenst her familys wishs to get to know gafoy people and is secretly helping to give us the rights to have Equality for all.
I know her religen is very strict and does not allow her to talk to us, but if she stays the path! - im very proud of her to do what she has for us already.

I know you are too polite to say this, they actually would like to see you dead. (death penalty). They think of you as vile. As long as churches have followers, (no matter what church) and they teach there is a supernatural good and opposing supernatural evil... they will find one. I'm not religious, nor do I claim to defend the likes of those zealots who use faith to justify prejudice, but all religious people are not the same.
Among those who filed suit against the passage of prop 8 were religious organizations and liberal churches who saw love as the ultimate family value. True, conservative Christianity is an obstacle to equal rights, but they do not represent all Christians. The nations and regions of the world which allow gay marriage are all majority Christian.

Case in point on religious groups changing: the UK's Quakers have just officially started lobbying for full marriage equality as a denomination. Many Quakers had been lobbying individually long before this - including all of my Meeting - but this is the first time a major UK denomination has come out in active support of gay marriage; most are either vehemently opposed (Catholics, NFI, Pentecostals, etc.) or deeply divided (CofE, URC, Methodists, etc.).

What does not religious mean? I appreciate the statement and know many christians myself who support. gay marriage. I also know "knowthyneighbor" and have found many christians who claim they care about gay people, who signed the petition!
But that's beside the point. No person who is condemned in a religious book is safe if the religious have a right to vote against them at the polls. We MUST tell the truth about religion REGARDLESS of the fact it will make others uncomfortable.

This is the problem I have with state democracy. The majority can simply take away your freedom by a tiny margin. This is also frightening when the majority are idiots or superstitious, gullible people. It's very difficult to educate those who are dogmatic sheep.
