i truly respect chris and he and i are a lot a like i spent 5 years hitchhiking canada and have spent 3 months in the wild aka no mans land ultimate freedom i made some travel videos check em out on my page
It's interesting how everyone is taking out mainly two quotes out of this movie. "If you want something in life, reach out and grab it" and "I read somewhere how important it is in life not necessarily to be strong, but to feel strong; to measure yourself at least once". But why does noone talk about the quote that defines this movie? "Happiness is only real when shared." Such true words; they are the moral of this story.
This movie makes me really really sad. Even though it may look like he made the right choice by leaving everything behind, you later discover that he learned a big lesson, and that was that happiness is only real when shared.
And, the really thrully essence of things cant be undrsand on society. The truth of things it is on nature. In the movie, he always lived a lie, and he felt the necessity of have some distancy of it, he wants to know the truth , tired of mores lies, he wanted to set him free of all him life . . .
The point of the movie is that freedom and society dont work together. When we are in society, we have no freedom. When we have freedom, we dont are on society, cause my freedom ends when starts your. So, society works in the way we have to finish with my own freedom if i want respect your.
@GabiMontez85 You make a great point. The fabric of society relies on the cooperation of all its members, which inevitably leads to one person serving the interests of other people. I will say that since we are social animals, society arises naturally. In spite of its repercussions (e.g. pollution, war, etc.) it also provides many advantages. I think establishing the state was a wise thing to do.
this movie is so beautiful, its all about need to fell free and need to have some distance from society... Because we are animals too, we live in society and grow up in society but we have natural instincts too.
Sometimes society applicates some pressure on us, and we miss space for our natural instincts, and we could fell that we are in some kind of prison ,sometimes.
the movie goes about the freedom you must get all your rights away of you and life like animals and your free animals are not dependent on money and everything they depent on them self
Too bad sean penn had ANYTHING to do with this story. He makes it less than what Christopher McCandless stood for and was trying to find. Just my two cents. Don't forget to become self-sufficient. Peace.
hey everybody ! I'm french and I don't understand all he say when he said "If you want something in life [...]" and what he say from 1:01 to 1:11. give it to me in english please ! thanks so much !!
He says from 1:01 to 1:11: "I read somewhere how important it is in life not necessarily to be strong, but to feel strong; to measure yourself at least once."
Hey im glad i clicked this video because this is one of my favourite peices of music. The song on 1:36 is by ' X-ray Dog ' and it is called ' Acts of Courage Orchestral ' It is also on the twilight score (i think) But this is definately the song you are hearing :).
No but his character did not believe in anything related to society or the system. Mobile phones, matches, boats etc are authorised and relate to the government.
He just wanted NOTHING from society. He wanted life's freedom.
I love this film, I leave my home town to learn more and start a new life and now I stuck in a another country just because of my nationality I cannot use a ATM machine and no health insurance. I start crying at the end of this film but tell you it is just fun.
i really want to see this movie. it looks so good! i have been to Alaska and i can understand why he wants to go there. it is so incredibly beautiful!
i know what you mean man. the movie makes him out to be some kind of hero but really he was just a guy with a lot of issues. Thats from watching the movie of course i cant say that i knew him or anything...
obviously u didnt understand the movie much. he was livin the life, graduated, but he wanted to get away from all the corruption of society and just wanted to experience true freedom. and to me he is a hero. that taked guts, burning ur s.s. card, would you do that? i wouldnt. he had nothing besides the clothes on his back and a gun. it takes someone with true passion and courage to do all the things he did. im not tryin to be mean to u or anything im just trying to explain it a bit better
He wasn't a hero. He was stupid. He said he wanted to get away from the world where people were so bad to each other. But, he completely missed how many people he met along the way that were good to him and loved him, and just wanted him to stay with them. He missed the love people were trying to show him that was right in front of him, and he died because of it.
i cried my eyes out for 15 minutes at the end of this film - it truly is such a masterpiece of social commentary causing us all to reflect on our daily pursuits and analyze just what it is we are doing with our lives. An incredible acting performance that somehow got overlooked by the Academy.....everyone should bask in the warm and challenging glow of this film's light.

the movies was kinda dragging.
Plus the main character is freakin deluded, he can't put into consideration other people's feelings, particularly that of his parents'.
Trust me, this person may make for a movie that sells, but his personality is something you can't tolerate in real life.
Watch the movie and see for yourself.

i know what you mean man. the movie makes him out to be some kind of hero but really he was just a guy with a lot of issues. The concept of what he did makes a lot of sense, and the idea of doing what he did (but not dying) is really intruiging, but as for chris mccandless himself, he seems pretty vain and ignorant to what he was doing. Thats from watching the movie of course i cant say that i knew him or anything...
