  • GM bumpers are still good for 5 MPH. My Malibu was rear ended and the bumper wasn't even damaged, just scratched. The Bimmer and the Elantra that hit me didn't fair so well. the Bimmer's grill was busted and the Elantra had a busted radiator.

  • This is why i choose to only buy older cars

  • now THAT'S A BUMPER!

  • I'M NOT GOING TO PAY 469$ FOR F***ING REPAIR!

  • the car is a class whore !

  • is the driver ok?:O

  • At the speed which airbags would deploy, this car would be folding like a tin can. These cars were built like they were disposable, and as far as cars go, they were.

  • @WaveX28 tat crash test was accually done at 40mph and the bumpers barely moved idk what your talking about

  • Look at that. An actual BUMPER.

  • escort....mhmhmhmh berlusconi likes this element

  • Different times, when you said Escort it was only this Ford ;-D

  • what older cars do less damage ?!!

  • i had a 1981 two door years ago. when i was 17 it was a great car for a kid to beat the piss out of. you couldnt kill it.

  • crashed the bumper? buy another car...

  • was that in slow motion?

  • Comment removed

  • fail

  • and back then after a hit like that the car remains fully operational and yet the driver was unharmed compared to todays cars where it would set the air back off and leave the driver flat broke and mentally unstable from his financial corruption from buying a new bumper for his car.

  • @weasel884 ... air bags only deploy in impacts of around 28mph, a modern car would also receive hardly any damage at those speeds and any damage it does get would be cheaper to repair.

  • @mopman94 from my experience ive had less body damage from car wrecks with cars with out air bags, metal bumpers and full frames.the cars with plastic bumpers, air bags and crumple zones gave me a broken back, shoulder, knee and messed up neck.my buick kept me safe when i rear ended a caviler and when i rear ended a honda with a lumina i wasnt so lucky

  • @weasel884 You can't compare crashes and say that car kept me safe, you might have been doing different speeds in the crashes, if in the second crash your face came into contact with the airbag then if the first crash where under the same circumstances you would have a steering column for a face now.

  • @mopman94 well i had two mid sized cars, hit two cars going about 35 mph,and if the lumina had no air back i would of hit the top of wheel and been alright.that i would know because i did that in the buick, and as for the steering coulom they never moved other than they broke and would not hold up into a locking position.

  • @weasel884 What you also have to take into consideration is the lumina is still quite an old car. In a 30mph offset crash with a 2005 Renault Espace crashing into the old 90's Espace, both cars have / had 5 star safety ratings when released, the occupants of the old Espace would have been killed where as in the new Espace they cars computer decided it did not even need to deploy the airbag, which it did not and the occupants would have walked away fine despite the car being a wreck.

  • @weasel884 Some totally incorrect information here. The speeds shown in this video are far too slow to activate airbags.

  • @weasel884 Air bags don't deploy at 6mph...

Also, lets check out higher speed crashes:

Modern cars: Good chances of survival, well protected by airbags

Old cars: Dead, neck cracked by roof and dash crushing face and punctured heart and lungs by steering wheel column hitting ribs.

  • If it was anything made in the last 10 years that bumper would have been trashed. Today's stuff are crap

  • No wonder American highways are the less safest in the world if these are their crash tests ;) (nah, only joking.)

  • 86 dollars?Thats what the car costs.

  • @MrGuitartramp Be careful. Some people on here might think your being serious! lol

  • @MrGuitartramp no, repair costs

  • @Dzmitrychabatar No,It's the cost of the car with fully equipped and customized.

  • Fortunately the had gasket would blow a long tome before you ever had the chance to wreck it.

  • its safer than the prius

    lol

  • @juanda1995 no dipshit its not try a 45 mph test in the escort you would be dead cause im pretty sure a 1981 FORD is not gunna have airbags

  • Booo I wanna see that piece of junk get totalled

  • @noladol that comment actually made me doubt my own intelligence. I had to watch the video again to make sure I read, "Rear full........$383." So, now I'm curious. Can you read?

  • @jalamphillips It was a joke. Being a Ford Escort and all. Sorry if you had to waste your time watching the video again to prove you don't have a sense of humor whatsoever. Kudos to you.

  • $383 to adjust a bumper?

  • @TheThingyThings That was probably to replace the engine after that collision we just saw there.

  • @noladol the full front collision was at 86 dollars, so thats just the costs of replacing the bumper and maybe some small parts

  • @stonee206 Thank you, Sherlock.

  • yeah the prius and Fit will have thousands of dollars in repairs.

  • its so inexpensive because nobody wants an 81 escort

  • '

the auto company is always put 2 WEAK bumpers on the vehicles,,,

both bumpers are plastic and thin weak metal,,,

    why do that

  • These 5 mph bumpers disappeared because even though they worked well at low speeds, they were way more expensive to fix once you went over their limits. And the funny thing is the insurance industry was the one who asked for 5 mph in the first place, but by the early '80s they had had it with the repair bills and asked for a rollback on regulations.

Today's bumpers are weak by comparison, but everything else about today's cars is waaaaaaaaaayyyyy stronger, and we're much better off for it.

  • OMG he dinged it!

  • tao empurrando o carro com a mao kkkkk'

  • lacked the value for the repair

  • No need to even get out of the car.

  • uhhhh...there wasn't that much damage cause the car wasn't even going that fast!!!!

  • This did so well because its before they changed the federal bumper standard from 5mph to 2.5mph and allowed unlimited damage to the bumper covers. Today the standards for low speed bumper tests are much lower. Some cars into the late 90's earliy 2000's still met the old requirements but very few do today. Today cars do not have bumpers that jut out away from the hoods or lights as much as cars 10 years ago. My 2001 mustang actually still meets the old 5mph standard, it even came with a...

  • @NitroGadvRules document certifying that it meets the old 5mph standard which was much stricter in what is allowed to be damaged and how much repairs cost.

  • @NitroGadvRules I have a 98 Buick Park Ave and the bumper is far away enough to protect the grill and lights. They have the bumper shocks mounted to the plastic coving, the rear bumper has the shocks mounted to the bumper. This is what they need to go back two......

  • wtf is this sheit

  • then they made cars with the molded bumpers into the sheet metal or should i say plastic you bump them at that speed the cars trashed garbage ford showed the reality in that video

  • @irobot2009able Are you an idiot? this shows just how well built these cars were compared to now days.

  • so stupid

  • @jtreign9097 you have a 1981 ford escort? really? NICE Car! i Loved these cars..still got yours?

  • @jakesaintsrow123 yes was my moms car she bough it new....its long gone now but it had 400k+ with hardly any rust but there was some

  • @palebeachbum was her 84 a good car?

  • did he die 2 ? ahahhahaa

  • Wow

  • lame

  • yeah the good old times

  • Wow, spam eats up half of this video.

  • I used to own a 82 Escort. This video has the wrong title, it was actually the 1/4 mile trap speed.

  • See this is what I am talking about, now a days cars virtually have no bumper. The bumper on cars these days are so flat and don't stick out they don't help at all in low speed collisions like this.

  • boring!

  • love the bumper assemblence

  • its funny how the cost of repairing this one is wayyyy lower than a modern car in a similar situation..

  • That was nothing. I can build something that can withstand such a slow crash. What was that, 5 mph?

  • it even looked like shit in 1981... thought it was just cause they were old now but i guess i was wrong

  • fuck yeah MK3 ESCORT

  • I can do that.

  • i want fast crash not snail crash

  • they were built much better and strong for bumps back then

  • BOÏNG !

  • This made me jizz.

  • That's why they call it a bumper. Perfect.

  • DID HE DIE?

  • @njcrox DID HE DIED?

  • @njcrox DID HE DIEDED?

  • @njcrox it's "Did he died"

  • @njcrox its died dumbass

  • @chinchillawrangler So you think its "DID HE DIED?!" Wow, you're fucking retarded..

  • @DavidWood17 YES THATS THE JOKE RETARD YOU OBVIOUSLY DONT SPEND ENOUGH TIME ON YOUTUBE

  • @chinchillawrangler Calm down nerd.

  • @DavidWood17 CALMING DOWN IS FOR PUSSIES IM NEVER CALM BITCH FUCKC YOU MOTHER FUCKER!!!!!!!!!WHY DONT YOU GO SMOKE ANOTHER CARTON OF MARLBOROS AND DRINK ANOTHER BUDWEISER MOTHERFUCKER

  • @chinchillawrangler How about you go "DIED" lmao idiot.

  • @chinchillawrangler Dude, calm the fuckin shit down!

  • what was the point of that video? any car can survive that except chinese cars!

  • i think..the ford was reached the spectacularry speed of 5 kilometers per hour!!ha ha ha/!!

  • new cars are a rolling coffin equiped with a pillow in the steering wheel to lay your weary head and a xm radio to pick up white noise while your dead. I drive my 1969 cadillac coupe deville any day.

  • @ominousmaximus You may change your mind after watching "Malibu vs. Bel Air".

  • @IROC320i

ok watch that video again. watch it carefully. and pls tell me what that dust is coming from the bel air. rust? yep. you are right.

that bel air - no doubt- wasnt in good condition. if it was, then it wouldnt result in such a result.

  • @amokachi31 Oh my gawd, that made me laugh. Try watching searching for "1960's Cars Crash Test 9" then watch.

I do see dust, but I doubt it is rust. A vehicle that is 50 years old will undoubtedly have dust when it is slammed head-on into another vehicle. I truly doubt the IIHS would use a rust-bucket piece of crap to test a Malibu with a price tag of 25k+.

  • if this was a new car, your bumber would be cracked the fuck up... Those still some ugly bumbers though.

  • bumpers doing what they were designed to do...what a concept

  • my mom had a 1981 ford escort station wagon, got rid of it in 1997 for a '93 Mercury Topaz.

  • was the escort a good car?

  • @jakesaintsrow123 to be honest I can't really remember, being only 6 when it was sold off, but I don't remember it ever failing on us, and it seemed pretty solid car, and it took us on long road trips.

Now the Topaz was a piece of crap, and it lasted barely 4 years, always constant engine trouble.

  • @jakesaintsrow123, I've had a '82 one since 2004 and I like it. Of course it's terrible to drive in comparison to modern vehicles, a death trap in an accident etc., but still...

  • Nice car!! Is it in good shape? ..Older cars are a Blast to drive!! But yeah these escorts are not That safe

  • @jakesaintsrow123, when I got it, it was mint. 33,000 km (20,500 miles) in the odometer, one owner etc. Now it has something like 120,000 km (75,000 miles), but I still wash and wax it regularly etc.

  • Good lord those bumpers are ugly

  • @BlackMetalWarewolf yeah but get in a collision at 30 in that ford and youll be paying a lot more than the cost of a new cars repairs from your hospital bills, theres a reason why 1950's plymouths dont dent, they weigh a ton and are made from solid steel, but would you rather crash in one of them or 2008 corolla? nuff said

  • @bobbobbob1991, obviously I'd crash with a '08 Corolla. Modern cars are much safer than old vehicles.

  • So economic the same car can do all the crash tests :D

  • @BlackMetalWarewolf Dont talk if you're clueless about something...

  • Ha ha ..................

  • @BlackMetalWarewolf

    Just think to pedestrian......

If you 're thinking of pushbar, i hope never crossing your car ...............

Sorry but safety for pedestrian, biker and first .... children out of the car is more important to me.

  • @tdnamur Maybe you should watch before you cross the street and not let your kids run in front of my car thank you very much.

  • if that was mine, i woudnt really care it just a ding

  • Did that bumper just do what it was supossed to? That's why I drive old cars

  • mocos

  • I love the 80s-mid 90s escorts and sierras.

  • Old school cars ... never gonna be the same! Made for people not for profit.

  • 40 seconds wasted, congratulations your life is 40 seconds shorter!

  • 40 seconds wasted congratulations your life is 40 seconds shorter!

  • @BlackMetalWarewolf

    You are just CRAZY

  • @BlackMetalWarewolf

    Just for the pedestrian protection

If you can't understand this, never drive a car .

You are all completly crazy with you're fucking truck with 2 or 3 tons heavy ....

  • @BlackMetalWarewolf It's the crumble zone in the bumper. The metal is digged and it absorbs energy from the cabin. Althrough the repair costs more, it is much safer. You choose!

  • @ballader1 This is back when they still had bumper shocks on them. My 98 Buick Le Sabre still has the bumper shocks, A Honda Accord hit me going about 5 or 6 miles an hour, no damage to either car. The Honda was a 92 model. You could tell the shocks went in and returned the bumper to correct position. Paint knocked off the shocks from going in and returning back out. Need those back.

  • @1969pontiac1 Bumper shocks were discontinued sometime around 1984 or 85. No way your 98 Buick has them. It does however have a plastic bumper cover and possibly styofoam behind it that has some "give".

  • @queensplazasouth I see them, I know what they are. plastic cover right, mounted to shocks. front and back. I will take a pic if you want.

  • Good luck when that car hits you and doesnt crumple and ends up inside YOUR CAR, and inside you. Im sure you'll be thinking "well, good job he didnt have one of them crumple type cars, bet hes saved himself thousands! I should get one once I get out of hospital. And new legs!"

  • i would take this car over a chinese car.

  • old cars trespass the damage to the passengers, as not the new cars do, they absorb the whole impact by deforming the car

  • @BlackMetalWarewolf like I said, people buy a car for the appearence. unfortunaly, we can't change that.

  • @BlackMetalWarewolf thats right. now, I understand what you meant. I wasn't able to do it before. it's true that the ford bumper makes more sense, but a lot of people buy cars for their looks. oh, and I never lost my education, in fact, you were the one who called me dumb. I do know what I need about all kinds of cars, and if I missunderstood something, it's because I'm only 16 and Portuguese.

  • Is that $86 in 2011 US Dollars or 1981 US Dollars?

  • test results:

    yep, it's a goner.

  • @BlackMetalWarewolf no kiding, is that right?! can you see my point now?! if these expensive parts will save my life, then hell yeah I will pay for them!

  • @BlackMetalWarewolf but no one drives at 5mph, crash and old and a new at 60mph and you'll see the "advancement".

  • @94BrunoO look up the Malibu VS. Bel Air. Theres your advancement, and your sign. :)

  • @123abcitseasyas123 thanks. I've already seen it actualy, I think it proves my point.

  • @123abcitseasyas123

I still say that crash test was rigged up to sell people to new cars. All the other old car crash tests, none of those cars didn't crumble up like *that*. Clearly they used a shiny prop car with everything under the hood removed :)

  • Does anyone else the cable whipping around under the car? I wonder if this test wasn't perhaps rigged? Cable holding the car back from full impact?

  • What if ithis is just 5mph? LOL..

  • wow and it pays over $2000 to do that with a prius

  • @thegreatcb7 i dont agree there, as there is 2 other options you fail to mention #1: Walk. #2 drive safe, dont speed, stay off the other guys ass, dont run red lights/stopsigns because your schedule is more important then the other drivers life. and no impatient left turns

  • they forgot to add to that listing

yr 2011, insurance company would call that: TOTALED

  • Surely that isn't the english model of the mk3 Eccy..? featured here..

the side shot of the front half looks more like the Tolbot Horizon or perhaps the even Datson Cherry pmsl, the ol' days lol

  • @m27grimsby Correct; it was the U.S. Escort. Though based on the European Escort body shell, they shared few parts other than basic metric attachment hardware.

  • this is a false

  • What hitandrun77 said.

It's no good the car being repairable if you're fucking dead.

  • @BlackMetalWarewolf I also think so!

In fact, bumper on some JDM models like Kei-cars doesn't work!!

They aren't "bumper" but just an accessories!!!

I think not only USDM models but also JDM models must have 5-mile bumpers.

  • that bearly touched

  • forgot how ugly those things were

  • @BlackMetalWarewolf HOnestly I would assume you would just shrug your shoulders and leave it be ...not even 50 bucks.........The costs shown in this film are not even real numbers.....the bumpers are fine and dont need any tinkering...the numbers are just a reason for the insurance company to either increase/decrease your rates

  • I love this video, quite interesting how modern cars are looks over solidity. This proves that cars used to be built like tanks and now they're plastic toys prone to repairs costing a fortune.

  • @syndrome666

would you rather be in an old car when you have an accident ? I don't think so. Modern cars are intended to deform, so that the passengers do not absorb the whole force of the impact. Have you ever heard of crumple zones ? I would rather throw away the car and get out of it alive than be dead.

  • @hitandrun77 you know, i have to agree with you. "cars today are made to throw away" as my pap says. and i seen what happens when a 1959 bel-air hits head on with a 2009 Malibu and it scares the hell out of me that im restoring a 1970 fastback mustang to use as a daily driver. but dammit if they arn't so sexy!!!

  • @stangowner8687

You're so right that cars aren't made to last for a lifetime and they all look the same. Car industry is, let's admit it, an industry, and the profit is based on sales. Nonetheless, cars have become much safer than they used to be 10 or 20 years ago. I understand your passion for classic cars, as I have a 1968 VW Beetle. However, I wouldn't drive my kids in it. I've a crash test and it scared the shit out of me. I drive it occasionally for my own pleasure.

  • $469 for a car worths $100

  • Bumper crash test is a most boring test in the world.

  • @BlackMetalWarewolf fucking true as hell!

  • remember when cars had bumpers and chrome?

  • Er... what damage?

You can find a bumper for an escort in a scrapyard. 8 bolts hold it on the car. Maybe on the test escort was made from carbon fiber.

  • ಠ_ಠ how the fuck did you make that

  • umm.. was that just going ABOUT 4MPH!!!! THIS IS SOOOOOOO RETARDED

  • @WTFISWRONGISM Retarded? A modern car would cost $800 plus to fix after a similar crash. Now that's what I call advanced technology!

  • Why don't they wash the car and say: Hey it is a crash test!

  • this is dumb. i want to kill myself after watchign this

  • @TsunamiGato, your right the 1981 Fairmont was a much more beautiful car.

  • Escort is a trash

  • i used to have one of these as my winter car. My friend had a tercel and we would play bumper cars as we drove dont the street. of course that was before airbags came out.

  • I say bring back the metal bumbers insted of this plastic crap!

  • @hillygrill66 I agree with you on that

  • @hillygrill66 Or bring better engineering so the plastic bumpers won't get so damaged.

  • @hillygrill66 the problem with that is that metal bends whereas plastic can reform back into shape :D

  • @hillygrill66 They're plastic so that they're cheaper to replace in low speed collisions, plus modern bumpers still have a metal structure underneath for higher-speed collisions.
