I find it amusing that Sean Penn who is now an activist for Gay rights has always shown support for people like Fidel Castro and Che Guevara who were both behind the 1965 labor camp where many homosexuals were sent and signs at the entrance said "The work will make you men". I can provide more information regarding the documentary in that case, it is called The Times of Harvey Milk, by Robert Epstein and Richard Schmiechen, and I agree with you, Marikaya4, that everyone should know who Harvey Milk is, but I object to Sean Penn playing Harvey Milk because the Hamlet he advocates is notorious for appraising physical appearance in a woman and Penn obviously chose his wife for physical beauty. "The man just gets to do whatever he pleases" makes for bad studio policy.

Thank you! I'm glad someone mentioned that part. The only thing discusting about this is it took so long for me to know who Milk was given my lifestyle and love of history so on so forth. I cried watching the documentary and how cold and vile the whole killing was. he shot two unharmed government officals a few times before putting the gun to the mans head and doing it close range. I can't believe they only gave that prick 8 years. Makes me sick. Everyone should know who Harvey Milk was. Thanks!

I saw the movie in london today and it is excellent. Sean Penn is brilliant and the film has guts, is truthful and moving. I just wonder what he would have felt about the Castro today. He would ahve liked the fun bits I guess, but the community? What Aids sadly achieved in terms of a loving caring community savoured to remember all those dead souls, post-traumatic stress and its result Tina has destroyed much good left in what could be called a gay community.

Apalled at SF being totally commercialized, especially the Castro. Back in the 70's it was mainly Gay men who lived around there. Today,straight people dominate more of the Castro because of the AIDS crisis,a large majority of men died unfortunately. It is sad.

There will never be a large gay mecca again because of the economic disparity and the fact there aren't many gay men willing to live that experience again.

I think that the need for a gay mecca is less now because of people like Harvey Milk. In a sense, the gay mecca has spread out because of the progress of gay tolerance and awareness. Gay events and parades have now become the meccas for gay people to gather. And today there are so many places to gather than in 1978.
